New releases on the VC today. Still no Super Metroid of Super Castlevania. Come on Nintendo!
Right now, right this second, according to NIntendo, you can get on your Wii and download three new classics from the Wii Shopping Channel for your Wii's virtual console.
I know a lot of people were excited about Nintendo's generic Icy Hockey hitting, but Tennis, I really did despise that game, even when it was cutting edge. Fortunately, they make up for the offensive Tennis game by also releasing Sega Genesis classic Space Harrier II and Military Madness from the TurboGrafx16.
VC Releases (http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/tennis/harrier-2-military-madness-and-tennis-hit-wii-vc-222561.php)
I remember being blown away by Space Harrier on my friend's Genesis. But I don't think it would hold my interest today. Now Super Metroid, that's another story. Why does Nintendo seem to be releasing mostly crap on the VC with only a handful of decent games? What are they waiting for?

well I'd think that's rather obvious. It's not a wine party. Why would they want to blow all their best titles at launch and then have nothing but crummy stuff to restock with later?
Personally I think they're trying to go for something at least resembling chronological order.
I really question some of these VC releases. Two pinball games released and now a shoddy tennis game. Doesn't Tennis come with the Wii for FREE!?
Sometimes i get the feeling that Nintendo does things just to torture people. Friends codes, ridiculous prices, lackluster online capabilities and now this.

I agree that they are pacing themselves, and they have released a few great games. Super Mario 64, F-Zero and Sonic, but they have been rereleased already on other systems. Mario 64 was released on the DS, Sonic has been rereleased multiple times. The rest is mostly crap. I'm not really complaining, I'm just getting anxious. Have you seen the SNES games alone that Japan got on release day?
* Donkey Kong Country
* F-Zero
* SimCity
* The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
* Contra III: The Alien Wars
* Fire Emblem: Monshō no Nazo
* Mario's Super Picross
* R-Type III
* Super Castlevania IV
* Street Fighter II
* Super Mario World
I mean come on! Link to the Past, Contra III, Castlevania, Super Mario World. Give us some SNES love Nintendo!

It would be stupid for Nintendo to release the best of the best out of the gate. This console was not made with the Hardcore gamer in mind. Nintendo is looking to expand the market, not just please the damn fanboys. Anyone that is crying about these games not getting released on the VC yet must not really be fans or they would already own these titles...

I read somewhere an interesting theory. Nintendo is laying some eggs right now on the VC to pave the way for Sega and TG16 titles to hit. What Nintendo lacks in quality titles, the other 2 players are making up for it. It still doesn't explain why Nintendo refuses to put the pie factory back into DK. Also Nintendo has accumulated more than enough titles to put one awesome title out each week until the end of the Wii's life cycle. Running out of quality titles would not be a Nintendo problem for a very long time.

But come on. BLAZING LASERS!

Not gonna happen. The big release for Christmas is Toe Jam & Earl. The expanded list is all expected to come out within the next year.
I can think of lots of reasons for them to do it this way, but I don't understand why the release list is so different between Europe and Japan and the states - the only things I can fathom is that they think they have to target the market differently or that there's some sort of legal problem, or difficulty working with the ESRB.

The thing that pisses me off the most is that they don't store your credit card info like XBLM does. Having to point to every letter/number in my credit card billing information is getting old really fast...and I've only downloaded 5 things.

Just because something "pleases" the fanboys doesn't exclude it from likewise being viewed favorably by the public at large. I think Nintendo needs to be careful that they don't line up too many weeks of disappointing VC release lists early on, lest their most ardent customers (those who have already purchased a Wii) discount the feature at the beginning of its lifespan and look to other avenues (emulation, Xbox Live Marketplace, rereleases on other platforms such as GBA or DS, et. al.) for their quality classic gaming fix.
You have to remember--they're asking people to pay $5 - $10 for games that have NO extra features at this time... not even online multiplayer (which in my book is nigh-unforgiveable when I can load up any of a number of NES or SNES emulators and play River City Ransom or Mario Kart with a friend anywhere in the world for FREE).

It doesn't? But... I thought that the fact that it stored all that personal information was the reason Nintendo states that you're supposed to send things back to them instead of returning it to the store when/if it breaks.
So... confused...
Add in the recent announcement of Friend Codes in certain games and I'm wondering what Nintendo is thinking. I can sort of understand using Friend Codes in games aimed at kids as they can be used to control who they talk to but hopefully that isn't the case in general.

These titles on VC are mostly garbage. They know that people want to get the most out of their system so they hand out turds to sell to suckers. I have a Wii, but this is pathetic. They have SO MUCH MORE to offer than just Castlevania 4, Super Metroid, and Goldeneye. They got Sega on board, which means Vectorman, Ghosts and Goblins, Landstalker, Phantasy Star, Streets of Rage, Bloodlines, Rocket Knight... I could go on and on.
TG16 has Cadash (how I love thee), Splatterhouse, one of the BEST Castlevania's of all time from the TG16's cd Castlevania X, Bonk 2, Ninja Spirit, Y's 1 and 2, Dungeon explorer... I could go on...but not for long.
Anyway, the point is that there are a TON of great games they could release every monday, if not Nintendo's, then Sega's or TG16 - we should not be subject to this insidious plot of their to choke the shit out of us with mediocrity.
Where the hell is Metal Gear 1 and 2, Kid Icarus, Final Fantasy 1 through 4, Axelay, Actraiser, Cybernator, Commando, etc.?
No. We get tennis.

I really don't understand the bitching. There are so many good games spanning the lifetimes of the consoles supported by VC. Give it some time. Try out Bonk's Adventure, and experience what the TG16 had to offer (but you never saw because you didn't know anyone who had one). Play through LoZ, get your drunken friends over for five player Bomberman. Fire up Altered Beast, and make fun of that guy who thought it was so cool because it was the Genises launch title to have.
Hearing people complain about it is like seeing a kid in the ball pit at McDonalds with tears streaming down his face. You could be having fun, if you werent such a crybaby.

Military Madness is hex based and calculates additional damage to units based on how much your units are "surround"ing them.
I can't fucking believe we get military madness. That game is a terrific strategy title.
Yet another thread on an internet gaming site where the users assume Nintendo is targetting them with the VC. They're not, they're going after parents who will load up the shop and see a $5-$10 game and go "Wow! How cheap!" because to them games are $50+ investments and getting a brand new one for 1/5th the cost is amazing. Also Nintendo knows that if they want third party support they'd better not release their games or else everyone will just buy the good Nintendo games and those third parties will not get enough sales to warrant them supporting the system. Nintendo's learned from its mistakes of taking the attention away from third parties and now they're lavishing third parties with attention. This can only lead to more games later down the road and still people are angry about it.

For your information, I own a TG16 with Bonks Adventure, Cadash, and Ninja Spirit. I'll buy them again so I don't have to drag them out of storage and it's convenient (and I got all my points for free anyway). Altered Beast was a crap game that I won't pay for and neither should anyone else; and you're telling people they should spend money just to figure this out? Huh?!...
I am having fun with my console, despite how you imagine me to be, but they are intentionally selling shit (for the most part right now) just to make a few dollars more. I know there's better stuff in the pipeline. However, with an armada of games to choose from that are better than what they have now, I'm confused why they choose these particular games and others should be as well. If they want to woo potential customers with the Wii and VC, this is _not_ the way to do it. But you go ahead, buy it all. One mans trash...

It was a button masher and made for arcade as it cheated a lot and forced you to feed it quarter after quarter. The music was rather grating, too. On the plus side...umm...no...that was a different game. Heh heh.

While I can understand Nintendo would want to save some good stuff for later, this is the time they should be trying to wow people. And so many of these games aren't worth a $1, much less $5.
All the really simple old-school NES titles (Tennis, Hockey etc...) should be bundled or something. Anything that people are going to chuckle at and then never play again should be cheap enough that they don't mind when they don't ever play it again.
I bought the original Zelda just try try out the VC, but I'm not planning on buying anything else until they lower the prices. If that doesn't happen, then they don't get my money. I'm hoping everyone else will do the same.
Any word on original content for VC? I would be willing to pay for that (unless it's >$20).
I've been wondering if VC sales might help influence the possibility of sequels for games that never got sequels, or never got worthy sequels. Bionic Commando, Kid Icarus, and Blaster Master (sequels sucked) for instance. I will actually buy Blaster Master for $5 when it comes out on the VC simply because I would consider it a vote for trying (yet again) to make a worthy sequel.
I swear, if they made a really pretty 2D Blaster Master sequel with the Metroid/recent Castlevania/original Blaster Master gameplay, and got the music right (for god's sake, no rock! - it should be moody videogame style music!) people could get pretty interested. Or maybe just me. I dunno.

Ah, Blaster Master. You're right. Symphony Of The Blaster would be an awesome game for the DS (or maybe on the Wii).
And yeah, I guess I am one of the only people who liked Altered Beast. I probably played it a lot at the arcades and on the Genesis it was basically the same thing only with less quarters required. Didn't it come bundled with the system?
I don't know if I ever got past the second level. I'd usually beat the first boss and then give up. That said, I love that first level. Cheesy werewolves FTW!

Military Madness is one of the precursors to the modern Tactics games. Much of the unit makeup will be very familiar to you, and it's got surprising depth, if it is rather short (only 32 missions, IIRC).

Second why are people bitching over games that Nintendo may not have the final say on? Super Castlevania is not Nintendo's call, it's Konami's. I am sure Nintendo has spoken with Konami about it, but if and when that game will be released is up to them. Not Nintendo. A Hudson rep at gaming age says they will have news on TGX-16 CD games soon, but that for most of them they have to work with and speak with other developers.

Actually, I have been playing the VC games more than the full-price games. Of course, this is probably due to not having the time around exam week to dedicate seven hours to Zelda. A round of Solomons' Key or some Bomberman fits perfectly into those little study breaks.
I actually bought seven VC games so far. I got Mario Bros., Zelda, Solomons' Key and Wario's Woods for the NES. All of which I have had a stupid amount of fun with so far. I also got Altered Beast for the Genesis and Bonk and Bomberman for the TG. Altered Beast is the only one that I don't think was quite worth it as a game. But calling up my childhood friend who had a genesis and telling him that his prize pony didn't stand up to the powerful scrutiny of time was worth the games' price a thousand times over.
I guess it's just me, but there are games other than Chrono Trigger, Castlevania IV, and Super Metroid that are worth five dollars.

O.K. then, you're exempt.
I've played a large quantity of the current VC games and I have lots and lots of points to spare (6100), but I only downladed 2. GH and Bonk. I just don't see the current crop as 'Stellar'. And I've had almost every system out (save for 3DO, Activision, and Jaguar.) I _know_ what games they could do and I just don't understand why they chose some of these titles. Ah well, it's a moot point though, right? Neither of us are willing to give up our points and through personal opinion we won't ever see eye to eye.
If you enjoy them then good for you.
