Looks like Capcom may well have another sure-fire hit to add to their growing Xbox 360 arsenal in the shape of Lost Planet: Extreme Condition. According to the following official press release, the demos (both single-and-multi-player) have been downloaded over one million times!
Impressive stuff, but the exclusive review in this month's Official Xbox magazine deflated my expectations somewhat. Still, I'll likely buy it as I still play the E3 demo.

LONDON, - December 18, 2006 — Capcom® today announced that the single-player and multiplayer demos of Lost Planet™: Extreme Condition, exclusively for Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft have been downloaded over one million times by the global Xbox community. Since the release of the multiplayer demo on November 23, Xbox Live® players across the globe have spent nearly 300,000 hours locked in furious combat. Lost Planet carries a PEGI 16 rating and will be available across PAL territories from January 12.
“Xbox 360 players have now had two opportunities to try Lost Planet since the first demo was released in May, and they have in huge numbers,” said Hiroshi Tobisawa, President of Capcom Europe. “Since we made the multiplayer demo available through Xbox Marketplace, there have been hundreds of thousands of hours spent playing the game, which is a great testament to the quality of Lost Planet. This latest demo has completely energized the Xbox community, giving them something to look forward to in the New Year, when the next big hit Xbox 360 title hits retail.”
Lost Planet’s action-packed multiplayer demo is available as a free download on Xbox Live Marketplace. Xbox Live Gold subscribers can experience Lost Planet’s highly anticipated multiplayer demo, which lets gamers participate in heated online matches in the “Pirate Fortress” stage with support for up to 16 players via the Xbox Live online game service. Capcom debuted Lost Planet’s multiplayer gameplay at this year’s Leipzig Games Convention, where its riveting action netted top honours as the Best Xbox 360 Game at the show. In addition, the game was chosen by Tokyo Game Show attendees as one of the winners of the illustrious Future Award.
Combining a gripping single player campaign and intense multiplayer modes with support for up to 16 players via Xbox Live online game service, Lost Planet promises to be an epic gaming masterpiece. Taking full advantage of Xbox 360’s unprecedented power, Lost Planet will contain an unrivalled level of detail as advanced light sourcing is used to ensure a realistic presentation that enhances every explosion, smoke and particle effect. Enormous world maps unfold as players battle hostile creatures in blistering weather conditions across vast snow fields and deserted cities either on foot or in armed Vital Suits.
In addition to the standard edition of Lost Planet Capcom will also release a Limited Edition of the game. Packaged in a custom designed SteelBook™ case featuring exclusive cover art, the premium set will include the game, art book with exclusive concept art and a heap of multimedia content. As a special bonus, gamers that purchase the Limited Edition will have exclusive access to an additional multiplayer map for several months before it is made available as a free download on Xbox Live Marketplace, in summer 2007.

I totally forgot about the demos. I downloaded the single player one and my 360 froze within minutes so I just ignored it.

What were the reviews complaints, Fit? This was one of the 360 games that for some reason looked really good to me.

Mostly that it gets repetitive once you get beyond the fancy-schmancy visuals and get some ways into the game. :(

Well that is sad, but man oh man the demo sure was fun... Metacritic says they gave it an 80/100 though, so that shouldn't stop me from playing. So long as the other reviews come in the 80 range, it's a solid play for me.

Really? For some reason I just couldn't get into the demo of this game at all. Sure, the visuals looked pretty good, but the gameplay itself seemed pretty 'meh'.
It's probably just not my cup of tea, though.

That sucks to hear. Does it just not introduce any new elements or did it sound like the reviewer just wasn't much of a fan of the game?

The reviewer seemed like a fan of the genre, but just got bored of the repetitiveness.

games of this nature are my cup of tea and I still didn't like either demo. It is just a complex facade over an ultimately shallow game.
1. TEng: lets introduce a countdown system on every map to produce challenge that we can't seem to generate with encounters.
2. Lets use lots of autoaim... oh wait, maybe that is why we're having that challenge issue in #1?
3. Lets make NPCs that are not smart enough to move and/or return fire when being shot at. I'm going to *assume* this has been fixed. If I'm shooting a guy in a turret from behind he should get out of the turret and do something about it.
4. Lets make it so you can only carry 2 main weapons, and then make sure there isn't enough ammo for any 2 main weapons so that you're spending more time backtracking for that mg you dropped for something else instead of killing more bad guys. Hmm, this would seem to tie in with #1 and #2.
5. Lets blanket the ground in eye-blinding snow, saving lots of texture space, but burning out the retinas of the hardcore players. Maybe the Collector's Edition will come with a set of snow goggles?
6. The graphics may've looked great coming from last gen to next gen, but they don't look so hot now that there are other 2nd wave 360 games to compare it to. I had just gotten a 360 when i checked out the demo and having come pretty much straight from PC FPS at 1920x1200 with full eyecandy, the LP demo just wasn't doing anything for me with all the jaggies. Not a fair comparison, obviously, but still.
7. The multiplayer demo was horrible. Horribly balanced map? check. Hard to differentiate between friend and foe? check. Little to no feedback from weapon hits? check.
Then again, who am I kidding? It is a multiplayer shooter on 360 and it isn't PDZ. That pretty much guarantees I'm going to buy it. Need all the games I can get to make the most out of my Internet Gaming Tax payments.

Famitsu gave it 9/9/8/8 if I remember correctly.
BTW I agree with most of 51|Random's points. Yet strangly I came back to the game a few times and loved it. Maybe it isn't the kind of game that you can play *all* the time like GoW. The latest build seemed to have a lot of "new" gameplay but ofc, in the end, it is just a shooter. Only a few shooters can manage to build in exciting content. If they have fixed the AI it might be pretty awesome.

I guess I could see getting bored...the multiplayer was really fun, though...love those different grenades.
Also, I was most intrigued by the ability to wield mech weapons both on foot and in mech...but once that novelty wears off it could very well be a little boring.
Still, I really liked the gameplay and I will definitely be picking this game up when it is released...

Thank you Random for putting my thoughts onto (virtual) paper. I guess that pretty much sums up my feelings toward Lost Planet.

Random just nailed all the points, with probably one key difference. I'm not buying this game. Rental, at best.

Well you guys are the minority. I play the multiplayer demo every day. While yes the map is a unbalanced that doesnt stop me from playing FFA and racking up over 10,000 points a match. Day 1 purchase for me.
If they still made arcade shooters, this is what they would be like. the people who claim about "repetitiveness" should go try out some of their beloved 80s and 90s arcade games.
I'm getting it the day it comes out

And if were still in fashion, you'd still be ridiculed for wearing one five years from now. What a daft argument. Times have changed, as have the complexity of games and the demands of gamers.

I'm going to assume there was a "something" that you were referring to as being in fashion.
I think you're daft. the same posters here (you) who complain about games not concentrating on having fun anymore, when such a game comes out, say its repetitive.
Games aren't fashion, and lost planets gameplay is updated, but at its core it's the same feel as the old arcade games that were this a retro gaming post, you same hypocrites would be knocking each other over crying about why aren't they on live arcade yet.

Sorry, I meant mullets! I could have sworn I typed that.
Oh, and I'm not blasting the game as you are implying, I was just letting y'all know that it's allegedly repetitive. As you'll see if you look back on my history with LP, I love the demo and will likely buy it regardless. In fact, allow me to quote myself from the lead post:

Hint: I don't play any of my beloved 80s and 90s arcade games because they're too shallow to keep my attention nowadays. I was a kid back then. Playing Scramble! at the laundromat was a hell of a lot more entertaining than watching clothes tumble in the dryer.
I changed somewhere along the line, and my gaming tastes have become more complex. It is why nothing on XBLA has interested me enough to purchase it until just recently and even Assault Heroes was more of a whim than anything else.

Why not just play those old arcade games?

You know....I downloaded the mp demo but never played it. So just like shipped doesn't equal sold....downloaded does not equal played.

I liked the SP demo except for the fact that all the Ice Pirates or whatever they're called are dumb as fuck. The designer behind the game wanted to make something "as cool as Halo" but forgot to make the AI as cool as Halo's, and apparently that issue is in the full game as well. Guess I'll be renting this one.

Will the full version of LP have different difficulty modes? Since there's lots of complaints about the AI being stupid/non-challenging, I was just wondering if anyone knew about different modes maybe?

1,000,000 Downloads total for both single and multiplayer.
I'd assume that the mulitplayer demo got more downloads than the single player demo. Let's assume it's a 60/40 split.
300,000 hrs played/600,000 downloads = the average person played the MP demo for 30 minutes and hasn't touched it since.
Not very impressive.

I've said this before, but I wish gamers would remember two things:
1) Not every game has to be the same thing.
2) Maybe this one wasn't made for you.

...and maybe my comments weren't for you, perhaps you should remember that. From the feedback I got, it would appear that I'm not the only one with the same opinion of various aspects of the game.
Regardless of who the game was made for, or what it is like, it fails to deliver on a number of levels. Whether you care about that or not is up to you.
