Smwstuff (http://smwstuff.com) has announced and released a new version of the homebrew game 'Super Mario War (http://smw.72dpiarmy.com/)' for the PC and Xbox. The game was made with Xbox Development Kit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XDK).
Super Mario War is a Super Mario multiplayer game.
The goal is to stomp as many other Marios as possible to win the game.
It's a tribute to Nintendo and the game Mario War by Samuele Poletto.
The game uses artwork and sounds from Nintendo games. We hope that this noncommercial fangame qualifies as fair use work. We just wanted to create this game to show how much we adore Nintendo's characters and games.
Features:
- Up to four players deathmatch fun
- a whole bunch of game modes (featuring GetTheChicken, Domination, CTF, ...)
- Comes with the leveleditor - you can create your own maps...
- ... and a lot of people did so. There are currently over 400 maps
- More fun than poking a monkey with a stick
- The whole source code of the game is available
- uses SDL and is fully portable to windows, linux, mac, ...
- CPU Players
- will make you happy and gives you a fuzzy feelingYou can download it for the PC either from Here (http://www.dxdec.com/hosted/72dpiarmy/smw-1.6-bin.zip), Here (http://cc.usu.edu/~jerr/smw-1_6-bin.zip) or Here (http://home.isp.studenten.net/sparrewatski/smw-1.6-bin.zip).
Very good indeed, So many features and you can create your own maps!

Ninetendo'd get a ton of PR if they let them buy the game for $1 (a lot cheaper than a lawsuit) and give it away free on the Wii Software download section. Then give us the first MP online Wii title. And a great way for them to test their MP networking on a simple lil game.
And I'm sure the programmers'd get a kick out of the recognition - a great bit of publicity for the CV.

This'll go over well.
Also: Does anyone know how distribution for the 360 will work?
It looks like it was developed using SDL, not the xbox dev kit. There is an xbox version, but that appears to have come later.

Only problem is, from memory (I played it a long time ago dunno if its still the same or not) it's quite bloody and has sound effects pulled from games like Quake or UT, announcers screaming "DOMINATION"/"QUAD KILL" etc.
It's hilarious fun though, it's exactly the same game as jump and bump, and I've played that as homebrew on an Xbox with 3 friends for literally over an hour on a single map, laughing the entire time (WITHOUT any chemical assistance mind you!).

Awesome fun! Ninty should add this to the VC lineup for Wii.

Quick question for the newb minded around here (aka me):
Will the Xbox version of this work on an unmodded box? Where do I get the download for it, and do I have to do anything special to burn it to DVD?
(okay, three questions)
I checked the xbins site but it looked like there was just information about releases, not actual downloads.
Thanks!

It's made with the original Xbox dev kit. Not Xbox 360 one or the Live arcade one.
You need a modded box to be able to run that one.
I don't think they have the right to distribute the binaries since they were compiled with the XDK. It it's like 1.6, you'll need to either compile it yourself or look somewhere else for the .xbe's

from the site's FAQ.
How do i get files?
Once you have joined our room, type "/msg xbins !list" without the quotes. You will recieve a message from xbins with FTP info on where to get files.
No, we will not tell you where "Our Room" is, so find it yourself.
How do i get files once i get that info?
---
By using a ftp client. The most popular are flashfxp and cuteftp.
There are no files availible for download on this website.
A torrent should pop up fairly soon.

Goddamn, and here I was looking for the perfect Xbox homebrew multiplayer game to compliment the other good shit I have when friends are over. This'll go over big. :p
And you know, honestly, if they make sure what they make for it isn't from other games, maybe change the title (Just to be sure, you never know) a little to something as simple as 'Battle', I think this really would have a good chance of making it on the VC. I hope they try, I could see this becoming quite a popular game for downloading.

so if they're going to spend all this time and hard work to make the damned thing why would they use other people's ip so they will get shut down by the inevitable legal action?
Everybody seems to whine that there are too many sequels and not enough original ip... if you have the chance to make some original ip why squander it like this?

That game is a freaking blast. I still haven't tried all the modes.
The only thing they'd have to do is pull the Final Fantasy characters, but I can't wait to play this game with friends.

They made a game using IP that Nintendo owns, so does this really matter?? :p
