IGN's RPGVault has posted a very interesting Q&A (http://rpgvault.ign.com/articles/614/614424p1.html) with Egosoft's Greg Kingston on the upcoming space combat / empire building / exploration sim X3: The Reunion. The Q&A talks about the game's features, its planned release (Q3 2005), and why the expansion pack to X2 was cancelled in favour of development on X3.
Jonric: What can players anticipate with respect to expanding the game universe? Will there be many new sectors?
Greg Kingston: Although it isn't finalized yet, there will be a significant number of new sectors added to the universe, and both these and existing sectors will differ strongly from previously. Sectors will be more three-dimensional and be of varying sizes.
There will be more emphasis on life within the universe as well; for example, 'home' sectors will tend to be safer than the borders. I can't reveal too much without spoiling the game, but the new pirate faction, the Yaki will get its own space now.
X2 was an amazing game, by far the best space sim since Privateer, marred only by some poor combat AI and a very high learning curve. The open-ended, do-anything style of game is very under-represented, so here's hoping X3 is as good as it promises.
