Blizzard (http://www.blizzard.com/) posted this news item today on the front page of the World of Warcraft (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/) Community site, where they reveal the opening cinematic of their first expansion pack for their popular MMORPG World of Warcraft is available both in a streaming Flash version on their website, and a downloadable Hi-Resolution DivX version:
In the wake of its world premiere during Spike TV's 2006 Video Game Awards, we're excited to present the opening cinematic of World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/downloads/movies.html). The trailer offers an epic cinematic introduction of the Blood Elves and Draenei, as well as a foreboding message from Illidan Stormrage, who makes an appearance as well. The January release of the expansion is just a few weeks away now, so check out the opening cinematic here (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/downloads/movies.html) and prepare yourself for the challenges that await you in Outland.
Man, this intro gives me goosebumps. Plus, I'm completely biased for Trolls, so I'm happy to see them finally get some cutscene love, if only for a few seconds.

Wow...makes me want to play WoW again. I never get sick of Blizzard FMV's.

Needs more Dwarf.
Of course, the entire first segment of the original WoW cinematic is dominated by Dwarf Nose and Dwarf Bicep, so maybe they decided to focus on something else, instead.

Now, if only the actual game was that gorgeous.
Or included cut-scenes like that. I'd almost be satisfied with at least that.

The Mage is nicely represented, so I suppose that's cool.
I imagine I would feel more excited if I still played WoW.

I was overjoyed and thrilled to be going back to WoW, that was until, I remembered the utter pain in the ass it is.
Gather round chill'ins, let me tell you a story. There was a young man that loved WoW so much. He remembered his childhood adventures and being a hero to many. He remembered the burden that had become that of being a hero and handed the his sword and shield to a younger generation.
Years later, our hero awoke one day and saw a burning on the horizon. Inside him, the days of old boiled over. He went to find the holder of his sword and shield so that he may ride once again, but the youngster had run off never too be found again. For shame, but the joy of the fight could not be quelched so easily. He traveled to his local BestBuy of Weaponry and obtained a new sword and shield for the low low price of $2.99.
Equipping the armor was a breeze in it's new easy to apply DVD format. Ah, but the armor came in several pieces now, all of which had to be applied before he could go off to battle. After 6 hours, all the pieces were now assembled.
Off into the battle he road, but when he got to the end of his driveway, there was a big blinking sign that sat there saying "You are hero number 338 in line to fight the badguys, please stay at home for approximately 183 more minutes". Each minute that went by, he became further back in line and the wait became a rolling clock of doom. "F'in retarded" I said, I'm here to fight. So I tried another gate with the same luck. I yelled to my neighbor across the way and he informed me that everyone was having the same problem. Seems the evil ones had pushed what they called "a patch not ready for prime time". Whatever that means. I was lucky though being poor and having no real armor to speak of as half my neighbors were robbed of most of their clothes and trinkets. The night passed, I never left my yard.
Day Two: I ventured to my gate and was granted passage. A good sign of the passing evil. I ventured forth to kill rocks and snails and other things a warrior does before he fights dragons. It was me, a pig, a girl in her underwear dancing for tips and another couple guys going on about "emo", "gay" and "nailing the dancing girl". Such is the life of a warrior. I finished the day at level 5 as I had run out of spiders to kill and sick elves to save.
Day Three: The gate was locked again because it could not retrieve my previous progress. Talked to the neighboor and he had the same response and to shut up and just sit there because crying about not playing was "noobish". I stared at the gate for some time and figured that it was either stare at it some more, or punch myself in the nuts in my house. I chose punching the genitalia because that was at least doing something.
Day Four: I thought about going outside, but yelled to my neighbor first. He said that it was Tuesday and that everyone who was anyone knew that you didn't leave your house on Tuesday mornings. I guess the devil scheduled cleaning the crap from his hooves at this time and could not be bothered with being locked in a fight of destiny.
Day 5: Yeah, I stayed inside and took my aggression out on some terrorists and pinatas that had been living under my bed. Gawd that was fun.
So to sum it up, Blizzard screwed up the entire game by doing their Burning pre-release. It's been unaccessible or down every night that I've tried to play less 1. Lots of people lost their items. And it looks to be more of the same when the BC is released. I think I'll wait another month or two before I play it, because the hype sure as hell doesn't match the service.

Same. Until I remembered in order to get the most fun out of the game I got to raid for 25 hours a week. No thanks
I bet those blood elves are wild in bed.

blah blah talking
I think my real question to you would be... why did you roll a Night Elf?
That's problem 1.
By the time you're level 5, you're wearing a cutoff t-shirt and green bicycle shorts.

In reply to the extended frustration post above... I had absolutely no problems on that patch day or any day after and I am on the server cluster that has been active since day 1.
So, in essence, your mileage may vary. If you are just getting back into WoW it would be prudent to pick a server that is not heavily populated.

Wow, nice video. If there's one thing Blizzard knows how to do, it's make cutscenes.
But yeah, I like having time to play other games. No more WoW for me!

Blizzard needs to make a full film. Their cinematics department kicks Square's ass for days.

I'm not into WoW anymore but I have to hand it to Blizzard for being a class act. They're hosting the movie themselves, I don't have to click through a million popup adverts to get to it, and it downloads nice and quick.

Let's see.. picked Icewind which was population LOW. Check.
Checking the forums showed that all servers experienced the account retrieval outage. Check.
Scheduled downtime on all servers. Check.
Reimbursement to all active accounts due to outage. Check.
Milage may vary.. yeah, if you find not playing your game, sitting in queues or losing high end items "fun", then yeah, we have different scales of measurement. :)

It was good, the kind of quality visually you expect from a blizzard cutscene, but the music was too low key and weak. Also some of the scenes felt limp.

That's odd...i had a 2 hour period where i couldn't play on patch day, baring the extended downtime, and after that had one time where the BG's crashed with me in it :(
Besides those 2 incidents, i've been playing trouble free since patch. Same with my guildies and my friends...we're all on crushridge. No disappearing items, nothing...most of the time i hear about that it's people bitching about how they "accidentally lost their full tier 3 set" despite having never put a foot inside naxx. (No insult, vermy, i know you didn't do that, but it seems like the valid complaints of losing gear are very, very few and far between.) With that said, a bunch of my friends have had their accounts hacked, due to keyloggers, and that's a much, much bigger problem. And if we got reimbursed time, that's awesome...i never suffered any significant downtime :D

Downloading it right now, and I fully expect to enjoy it. WOW, on the other hand, I played it obsessively for nearly 2 years. I'm so glad I got out and started actually having a social calender again. Not to mention getting back into gaming in general. WOW didn't tax your reflexes or head very much.

I've been tempted to go try WoW again for a while, BC was going to tip me over the edge if it was released earlier. But now? Screw it, I can not afford the risk of getting hooked to that game again. I have some seriously important entrance exams in a few months, if I don't get them I'm in trouble, so I'll be passing this one by ... at least until the exams are over.

Back on subject. Blizzard vid's have always been pretty amazing. I don't know about a movie, because all I would want it to be was one gigantic battle.

Sadly their FMV department is the only thing still firing on all cylinders. Mind you the rezzing scene was kinda crap, rest of it though, pure gold. Still no gnomes though, and only a brief glimpse of a troll, ah well.

That video demonstrates why I'm rolling a draenei paladin. Big, monstrous-looking good guys are cool.

Only had one problem the whole patch period. I simply couldn't connect. Had I tried 5 minutes after I tried my first and only time I would have gotten in. The only other weird thing, server dropped a few hours early on me before patch was applied. Not a big deal for me. YMMV.

Good and evil in WoW is a subjective concept. Couldn't the Tauren be montrous-looking good guys as well?
BigJonno
12-15-2006, 01:40 PM
Yeah and I love tauren too. I hate that people equate the Alliance with good and the Horde with evil. The tauren are probably the most "good" race in the whole game, now with the possible exception of the draenei, but I've not seen enough of the lore to back this up.
Savok

The lore changes at the whim of Blizzard for when they want to shoehorn whatever they want in. In other words there's no point reading, it'll only be rewritten again at some point.

Savok's pretty much hit the nail on the head. *shrug* If Lore is not held sacrosanct than it's diminished substantially. Part of the reason why I quit.

The only problem that I have with the (pretty minor) lore change regarding the Burning Legion's origins is that it's entirely unnecessary. They could've done it differently and easily.

How I felt at first, but I've come full circle in a sense. If they want to shit all over their legacy, well I'd best help them.
Launch day, or the first day the game actually works, I'll be in Exodar with my Draenei Warrior, singing Rocket Man.
Then I'm taking a Blood Elf Paladin to Stormwind, where I will constantly yell "I'm in ur base, stealing ur classes!".
Plus Draenei get to ride a giant fucking elephant and the BE dance is from Napoleon Dynamite. Sure it makes no sense but I've stopped caring, I have become, comfortably numb.

Speaking as someone who has played previous WC games and owns lots of WC merchandise, some of it pre-WoW, I have to point out that those "poor dumb bastards" who don't know there are Warcraft books probably think we're geeks.
"Hah, you don't even know there are books based on the computer game you're playing, you poor dumb bastard!" isn't exactly the most cutting insult going.
