Yahoo (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=581&e=3&u=/nm/20050517/tc_nm/tech_gameexpo_xbox_dc) is reporting that the XBox 360 Faceplates given out at the E3 launch party are already making there way to EBay. Some of them the bids are as high as $150 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=20385&item=8193020516&rd=1). Pretty crazy, considering the system won't be out for another 6 months.
There's actually 23 of them (http://search.ebay.com/xbox-360-faceplate_W0QQsofocusZbsQQsbrftogZ1QQsojsZ1QQfromZ R10QQsacatZ-1QQcatrefZC6QQsargnZ-1QQsaslcZ2QQftrtZ1QQftrvZ1QQsadisZ200QQfposZ18040Q QfsopZ1QQfsooZ1QQcoactionZcompareQQcopagenumZ1QQco entrypageZsearch) total on EBay. I'm sure more will show up soon, now that it hit the mainstream media.

Some people just get caught up in the hype and just want to be part of all the crazy stuff going on at E3. They want to own somethign themselves, even anything. I personally bought a japanese gamecube controller from a stupidly overpriced import store in the city, which sat on my shelf for a good 8 months or something between the Japanese Gamecube launch and my local Australian Gamecube launch, when I actually bought the console.

This is just sad. What on earth would you do with a $150 face place for a console that isn't comming out for like 5 more months? And once the 360 does come out will anybody really care that you got your faceplace 5 months early?

I think it's the fact that these people can say they're one of the "first" to own even just a small part of the XBOX 360. There's also the fact that these plates won't be reproduced later, so they'll be "rare" and exclusive ones that people won't be able to pick up alongside their 360 at launch, or even again. The prices are nevertheless far too high even for that... And I got the impression the plates would come in sets, what if this faceplate is off colour to the rest of the 360 parts, you couldn't even use it without having a strange colour/design mismatch.

laugh all you want but the faceplate thing sticks in the minds of non-hardcore gamers somehow. a semi-gamer roomate saw some ms pr (maybe the mtv thing, not sure) and he was most grabbed by the faceplates and camera thing and has no concept of the technical bits.
and i think a wood panelling faceplate that said "video computer system" would be sweet.

Since Pepsi has that new deal where you can win a XBOX 360 before it's out. I wonder how high THOSE will go for.

Every once in a while, this kind of thing is good: it reminds you just how many people are out there and that many of them would pay obscene amounts of money to get something youre not interested in. And how many idiots there are, sucking up oxygen and raising room temperatures everywhere. That too.
