IGN (http://pc.ign.com/articles/614/614551p1.html) has an interview up with Firaxis Senior Producer Barry Caudill about the upcoming sequel to the BEST strategy game series of all time, Civilization.IGNPC: How do governments work this time around?

Barry Caudill: There are no set governments anymore. In Civilization 4, you can choose from various civics and combine them to make the type of government you want. For example, you may have a Theocratic Police State that also has Universal Suffrage or you may have a Pacifist Slave State with Hereditary Rule. The Civics are divided into five major areas - Government, Legal, Labor, Economy, and Religion - and each of those has 5 possible choices depending on what you have researched. In addition, AI leaders will have certain favorite Civics and they may ask you to either switch to theirs or stop using the one that offends them.

Can't wait for this bad boy. Multiplayer out of the box as well!

I just want to say: Sp000000000000000000000000ggggggggeeee uuugh... ;)

The basic mechanics of the games have been alter much more extensively this time around. I really like the -sound- of the way Religion and Gov works.

The bastards, civ 2 and 3 ruined my education and now they are going to fuck up my degree. Oh well at least I should be well placed in case the world needs a new dictator in the near future ;).

Lets hope those axemen can't take out tanks this time.

My only complaint about the changes is those units look huge. Other then that I'm excited to my core.

You'd be fine if your major was Political Science.

Nice! I can finally create my utopia of the American economic system so I can get rich, Mexican legal system so I can bribe the cops to do whatever I want, Saudi government so I can rule with absolute supreme authority, Chinese labour laws so I can mass-produce worthless crap using cheap workers, and the Taliban religious system where everyone believes what I want them to or they die.

Cool!

When this hits the shelves I expect you all to join me in an extremely slow-paced, human only,one-or-two-moves-a-day "Play By Email" game.

Ha. We'll play on a huge world, with a complete compliment of Civs. Yes, you think it's going to be slow? We're talking a week minimum for a single turn I'm sure ;)

http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/civilizationiv/preview_6124000.html:Firaxis says that Civilization IV will feature a faster pace than earlier Civilization games, with a much more streamlined game.Uh-oh. We all know what 'streamlined' means in PR speak. Tread very carefully, Mr. Meier...

Civ 3 was such a distraction when I was in college. I wish they would port this puppy out to the PS3 and Xbox 360.
