Rockstar Games sends along the news that they are developing Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories for Sony's PSP portable entertainment system.

Rockstar Games, the world-renowned publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc., is proud to announce Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories. Developed by Rockstar Leeds in conjunction with series creators Rockstar North, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories will be available exclusively on the PSPTM portable entertainment system in North America and Europe following the European launch of the PSP system on September 1, 2005. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories will be shown by invitation only at E3.

"Returning to Liberty City and bringing it to life on a handheld system has been both nostalgic and extremely inspiring for us,” said Sam Houser, President of Rockstar Games. "The incredible PSP system technology allows for fans of the previous Grand Theft Auto titles to revisit Liberty City and see it from an amazing new perspective with an entirely original storyline. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories will be a bold new experience that has never before been possible on a portable platform.”

Liberty City Stories? So...is it gonna have a free-roaming world or is it going to be mission-based? Because a full-on open ended world sounds a helluva lot more enticing for a handheld than the alternative.

I know this is going to sound silly, and this is by no means meant to be a flame post, nor do I know what kind of answer I'm looking for here. But I want to know how the gameplay experience will be better on a handheld. Like, (not a flame, I own both), with the DS, it's pretty obvious, because you can do things on it that you can pretty much only do on that system. So far (and it's really early obviously), the PSP is pretty much the same thing as a playstation, but you're just able to take it with you. I want to see some innovation that I know they can do. For example:

I think the coolest thing in the world would be if you were playing GTAPSP and had your wifi on, and somebody else was within range and was doing the same thing, then you'd be able to interact with each other. There could be all sorts of possibilities. Kill the most number of civilians in a time limit given, but on the police scanner you could find out where the other person is and try to kill them, knocking them out of the game for a couple seconds while you up your kill count. Or the most obvious would be cops and robbers, where the robbers choose from a set of objectives and the cops have to stop them, pretty simple. Or co-op missions I think would be the best. You could fill a car, have a driver, gunmen, the works. The possibilities are endless so long as the PSP isn't stunted by only being a place to put PS2 caliber games that don't support the portable medium.

No matter what I'm going to get this game, but I want it to be something that I couldn't get on the PS2.

Uh oh. "See it from an amazing new perspective" is somewhat troubling to me. Sounds like this one is going to be top-down, in old-school GTA style. While I love those classic GTA games, I think a lot of PSP owners (including me, honestly) will be a tad disappointed if this looks like the bird's eye view from GTA 3.

If this is a true modern GTA title, as in modeled after GTAIII, then this will make the PSP absolutely blow up.
