Although there has been no official word from Nintendo, many people are now reporting receiving new beefier straps with their Wiis. GoNintendo (http://gonintendo.com) has a good side-by-side picture (http://gonintendo.com/wp-content/photos/wriststrap2.JPG) of the old and new straps. The new strap appears to be much thicker than the previous version. The question is, will the connector on the strap hold stronger this time around?
As a victim of a faulty strap myself (not to mention an over-active cousin) I'm curious to see if these new straps prove to be any more effective or not. Any EvAv-ers seen or received these yet?

I don't understand what is meant by "faulty straps". You're not even supposed to NEED the straps. they're just supposed to be there as a precaution. I always wear mine, but i have yet to actaully ever need it.

Haha, same thing here. I've never had the wiimote "slip". There must be a lot of uncoordinated people playing this system. Good to see Nintendo is looking to help the folks with butterfingers.

I've never released the Wiimote during play.
I did overturn a little table when reaching for a low ball in tennis.
This is what happens when you put real tennis players and bowlers in command of a video game system.
Just wait, Someone will mode the Wiimote into a 16lb bowling ball. :D

Despite the fact that I find all this silly (because I'm in the camp that says you just need to hold on a little more), I'm impressed by the response time of this. Maybe there was just something weird about the first shipment and this was the intended thickness all along? I just can't believe they would've reacted that fast to be able to repack and ship more units.

Look to be made out of a different material as well, like a stretchy weave thing. But again, the only way the Wiimote will ever leave your hand is if you're a god damn idiot, or missing your index finger.

I threw my wiimote once. My roommates had been playing Zelda all day, so the remote was nice and slippery from sweat. The plastic of the remote is difficult to wipe dry. Your index finger is one of the two fingers you primarily use when you grab anything, the other being your thumb. Combine all these factors with bowling, a game where you release your index finger just as you reach the point in your swing where you'd want to release if you were trying to throw the remote at the tv and you've got a recipie for disaster. I missed, thankfully. I had played dozens of games of bowling before this, all it takes is a momentary lapse of grip when you release that trigger and a semi-slick remote and you'll lose your hold on the thing. I guarentee you it will happen to you sooner or later if you play wii sports regularly for a few months.

I knew I should have reported this (http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showpost.php?p=546841&postcount=51) as a news item. :p

Sorry DangerousDaze, I hadn't read it on the site yet or in any threads so I sent it as news.
As for the issue at hand, as I've said before I've never let my wii-mote slip and until last weekend I was quick to call everyone who did an idiot. When my cousin let it fly during a game of tennis though I didn't have the heart to tell him he was an idiot. Should he have been swinging so enthusiastically? No. Should the strap have ripped out of the connector though? Probably not. Nobody at my place has been swinging anywhere near as hard since the incident but I still think I'll be replacing the straps with these new ones if they prove to be a bit sturdier. Anything could go wrong when you throw in the drunkenness that will ensue New Years Eve.

Yea.. I like all this assignment of fault to Nintendo, when they are the idiots that let go an launched the Wii-mote at 200mph.
But I like the Wii pun though.. :D Secret-wii (ly) :D

I fucking hate whoever wrote the title. It's an easy way to indicate "This is a Wii news item," sure, but I still hate it. Makes me want to filet a dog.
Edit: I am willing to acknowledge mine is not the majority opinion.

Shouldn't that be "Wii-leases" then? :p
/edit - how would you like that cooked?

"Secret-wii Wii-leases" would also work :D
I think they should sell a Wii branded safety helmet along with the new straps. And possibly a Wii drool cup.

Pretty impressive response time. I will compare mine to this image when I get a Wii.

nice, but why can't it be the same material that's used for the rest of the strap? would people be so inept to be able to fit that into the hole?
i would think that financially it would be cheaper to make the thing out of one continuous material rather then introduce the plastic piece and another different material into the product. not to mention that structurally it would be even stronger.

I just called Nintendo of America and they said the new straps don't exist
So I told the guy to go to the web site and look at that picture :p
Apparently the little guys at the nintendo store know nothing about it. This really grinds my gears! I want my replacement Wii straps NOW!
Last night my buddy played Wii sports over my house for the first time and he was swinging thing damn remote like it was a real golf club / tennis raquet. The whole time i'm pictureing my TV being smashed by a Wii-mote. Even after telling him 3 times that you don't have to go nuts like that, he still insisted on swining for the fences.
No one besides myself and my girlfriend will be playing my Wii untill this issue if resolved.

The reason why the Nintendo reps are denying it is because Nintendo doesn't want to publicly admit there's a problem.
Why?
Because if they admit fixing it, it means they're likely liable for the damages caused by the problem.

Except that they did admit it (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=70769).

My launch console came with an old strap as did my second remote.
my friends launch console came with the new 'thick' strap.
Both UK launches. The strap is a good deal thicker, can't say it's any stronger other than it hasn't broken yet.
