View Full Version : Playstation 3 Gets New Downloads
Sony has added a playable demo of Genji: Days of the Blade and two new downloadable games to the Playstation©Store.
Lemmings - $2.99
-720p
-40 New Levels
-Teleporting and Cloning Machines
-Global Online Rankings
Go! Sudoku – Free starter pack and purchase up to 4 additional packs @ $2.99 each
-1080i
-Multiplayer Battle Mode
-Animated Background and Music
-Online Ranking Mode
Go! Sudoku comes in 5 separate packs, the Easy Pack (516 puzzles), Mild Pack (376 puzzles), Difficult Pack (198 puzzles), and Fiendish Pack (98 puzzles). That is roughly 1200 puzzles for a total of $12.00.
I do not like that they split Go! Sudoku into separate packs but at least they are keeping the price fair.

Wow. Criticize them for what you will (and there's plenty to do it over!), but Sony has really been doing well with their downloadable stuff. Cheap prices for a pretty nice amount of content. I'm not a big Sodoku guy, but 12 bucks for 1200 puzzles isn't bad at all! And Lemmings for 3 bucks? Better believe I'm hitting that up as soon as I have my PS3.
I will buy Lemmings 2 tonight because I am a, well, you can fill in the rest of a very bad joke...

I don't think I need Sudoku in 1080i, but $2.99 for Lemmings is spot on.
Sony does online pricing right. Who knew?

Man, $1 for 100 puzzles... I don't play Sudoku, but that sounds like a pretty good deal.

I can't understand why people would play Sudoku on a console...

Why can't they just autogenerate the Sudoku puzzles?

Pass on both. Sony still has nothing worth downloading for me.

Same reason you would a crossword puzzle, I suppose? I'm not a Sudoku person, as I said, but I love crosswords and would download a set of crossword puzzles on XBLA or PS3's online store in a heartbeat.

It's nice to see Sony stay consistant with the cheap downloads. Now all they need to do is make these all transferable to the PSP (within reason of course) and I'll be very happy once I track down a PS3.

I cant really argue with lemmings for 3 bucks so yeah, maybe this will help to keep XBLA honest.

It's hard to make money that way!

I would gladly pay $10-20 for Lemmings, so this price is really a nice surprice.

Nice. Sudoku shows how Lumines should have been handled.

Why can't they just autogenerate the Sudoku puzzles?Excellent point. You'd think it a gimme, unless people are prone to comparing time on puzzles? (I don't play sudoku, so I don't know.)
But Lemmings? Microsoft would charge ten bucks for that.

My girlfriend plays A LOT of sudoku on the PSP (homebrew game) and she actually does compare time, but only with herself. ;) That game has 18 levels, but it's only levels of difficulty (=amount of visible numbers when you start), and the actual puzzles are generated.

$3 for 40 new levels of lemmings at 720p? They've already topped Live marketplace with that one---since I'd actually pay for more Lemmings at that price.

This news post makes me look forward to Monday (which I never do) and what games are going to be released for the Wii Virtual Console. Please let it be Castlevania 4 or Super Metroid!!

nice pricing!
My hope is that all the Sony and Nintendo downloads will help get Microsoft to do some better and cheaper things with Live downloads. I want Tetris for $2 and Go for $4. One good thing, I guess, is that with XNA in a few days I'll be able to write them myself or grab them from someone else who did. It's interesting to see Sony breaking up the download (like Lumines), but I kind of like that.

Competition is key in any market, so I'm assuming the competition from Sony will spur Microsoft to revisit their pricing scheme some time in the future - but not until there are enough PS3s to seriously challenge Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade.

It could be argued that you are getting much more value with live arcade. Many games include online co-op and online leaderboards. Online Co-op is very nice feature for games like Gauntlet. I do agree that games like Frogger should not cost $5 though. $3 is a nice price point for single player retro games.

Wait, wait, wait...they do this for a reason. Some people like Sudoku, but not $12 worth. This is a good standard for puzzle games. Some people get a kick at a short playthrough, and not all the packs. Same with Lumines. And that was months ago...

Yeah, that is one of many reasons I'm hoping that Sony does pretty good in the long run: abolition of the MS Internet Multiplayer Tax.

You know whats funny? This is being reported nowhere...at least nowhere that I visit. Kind of funny too because every xbox live trailer gets a news post at most places. Sony needs a way to get these announcements out.....just like that patch the other night.

12 dollars for sudoku is reasonable, but people complain that the $5 NES games are too much?

You know what's even funnier? The fact that Sony's PR department seemingly have no idea on how to spread the word on things like this. There's holding a grudge and then there's biting one's nose off to spite one's face.

Not sure about the titles themselves, but damn, Sony is actually making the downloadable content for a resonable price? Did not see that coming from the $600 console makers. Good for them, hopefully this will catch on with the others. $10 for an old game is too much money.

The math for that is not easy, especially if you want to provide a difficulty estimate.

Wow, now that is how you price downloadable content. That is at the perfect point where I wouldn't think twice before paying up. I don't think there's been a Live download that I haven't mulled over before taking the plunge.
I hope Sony keeps this up and forces companies using Live to rethink their pricing.

Wow, that pricing is indeed kick-ass. I'd love to play some Lemmings again. I probably won't be getting a PS3, but I hope that this makes MS and Nintendo lower their prices, and put them in real currency. I think both of their systems need some overhauling.

It's $12 for 1200 puzzles. That's a lot of puzzle for your buck. That said, you'll notice that I'm one of the few who has often defended Nintendo's pricing structure and find myself very willing to pay VC prices. I just also recognize that these are much better deals.

Well and let's not forget that you don't HAVE to spend the full $12 either. You could just pay $2.99 and enjoy that pack.
This is the way that Lumines should have been done.
