Atari has announced (http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/050517/nytu076.html) the return of the Driver series in 2006, to the PC, Xbox, and PS2. There are few specific details about this fourth game in the series, nor is there a title, but the game will support multiplayer for the first time in the series.

"Backed by a distinct driving dynamic that gave rise to a completely new sub-category within the driving genre, and with millions of fans worldwide, it is no surprise that the Driver franchise is often called the 'father of action driving games'," said Marc Metis, senior vice president of Marketing. "With our next Driver game, we are concentrating on those qualities that defined the franchise and established it as a perennial best-seller."

....

The new game is set in a photorealistic interpretation of New York City, features a seamless open mission structure integrated around a central storyline, and will be one of the first games of the genre to incorporate online play for console versions.

Without yet revealing details, the brand will return to its game play roots with a highly sophisticated, adrenaline-pumping car chase AI and unprecedented vehicle dynamics and physics.Right, that moves the interest meter from minus ten to zero. Now let's see how far they can move it up.

Okay this game has much potential. It appears they have already indicated that the PC version will not have online play. So if they do a PC version not only will it suck like the last one but you won't be able to play online. Wow I'm so excited......NOT.

Too bad really because the first Driver was very fun on the PC.

I hope it gets cancelled, another crappy "Driver" is the last thing the industry needs.

driv3r was a game i didnt read the reviews, (there wernt many before the release), and bought into the hype. I got the game the day it came out, and... wow what a POS. Its a rarity i buy a crap game, but that one took me by a hook. Needless to say, sold it for cash towards my PSP.

Yeah, you always have to use [ url ]linkhere[ /url ] or [ url=linkhere ] [ /url ] (without the spaces).

It's a pain in the ass, but oh well. :)

Will they just have to abandon this series after DriVer?

Ohhh! Another driver game?!

What new innovations in dishonesty and site bribeing will they come up with for this edition? 2 months review exclusivity to the sites that give it 95%?

Cant wait!

The Driver games are more frightening than the entire Resident Evil and Silent Hill series combined. I'm pretty sure it was a near unanimous vote on Driv3r being a smoldering pile of video game garbage. Don't developers ever read message boards (like EvAv, for instance) or game magazines? Can they really not see why making a fourth Driver game makes absolutely no sense? Perhaps they're trying to correct their previous mistakes and make-up for past transgressions, but seriously...they need to put an end to this. Let some things slip away with a shread of dignity, please.

didn't d3i3v3r3 or whatever it was called make them pots of money? (i don't actually remember, but i'm sure it was in the charts) even though it was total drivel, they marketed it on TV, so everyone bought it anyway. which means there's absolutely no reason for them not to make another steaming pile of shit and force it down the public's throat.

i just hate to think what impression some non-harcore gamers must get of the industry if they play only the games that are aggressively advertised and marketed - usually to make up for terrible review scores.
