Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a brave, but tiny, Japanese soldier fighting huge monsters like those seen in Godzilla films? If so, then you have to check out this video from Gametrailers.com (http://www.gametrailers.com/gamepage.php?id=3243) of Earth Defense Force 3. The trailer shows a player fending off attacks from a metallic "Godzilla" monster, as well as giant robots, spiders, ants, and other beasties. Additionally, the game will allow players to save the world on foot as well as by taking command of a scooter (hehe), tank, helicopter, or behind the "wheel" of a BFR.
EDF 3, or Chikyuu Boueigun 3, as it is known in Japan releases on December 14th, a week after the Japanese release of the highly anticipated Mistwalker RPG, Blue Dragon. While Japanese 360 sales in relation to Blue Dragon have reportedly been high, journalists have been critical about whether or not a single system-seller in the Japanese market would overcome negative brand recognition for the console. With the release of EDF 3 just one week after Blue Dragon and several other Japanese RPGs on the way next year as well as the next Tenchu game, could this mark a major push by Microsoft to win market-share (and relevance) in Japan throughout 2007?
The video makes me worried about the actual gameplay, but the content is definitely something exciting and new. Shadow of the Collossus meets FPS meets Mercenaries meets Godzilla. Please port this to the United States!

I've seen clips of these in the past. They look pretty interesting.
For a moment I thought you were talking about the one where you turn into the giant bikini-clad model who destroys Tokyo, but the EDF games will suffice :)

Please dont put Shadow of the Colossus in such a sentence ever again.

Is that the one where you fly around in a helicopter firing radioactive ray-beams at her boobies, and then it turns out she was just having a weird dream?
Looks cool, really. Graphics aren't insane but it could be fun

Heh...I actually thought the graphics looked pretty decent, but the gameplay looked like crap.

This game looks like it will have online co-op. If you watch in one of the older videos, you can see voice bubbles popping up over guys' heads and japanese voices that sound like they are coming out of headphones. That seems like online multiplayer to me.

I agree. Well possibly crap anyway.
Still, I hope we get this in the U.S. Talk about your weird Eastern games.

Yeah, I was raving about this back back at TGS, noone seemed to pay much attention then. I probably should have submitted it as news. ;)

I forget the source, but it will be released in the states.

This reminds me A LOT of Robot Alchemic Drive for the PS2. I guess it only makes sense, since they're both by Sandlot. Robot Alchemic Drive is easily in my top 5 PS2 games of all time, so if this does indeed come out in the states, then there is little question that I'll buy a 360 just for this.
Did anyone else play Robot Alchemic Drive? Am I the only one? I love that damn game.

I've never heard of Robot Alchemic Drive. Is this game like a sequel, as far as you can tell?
Holy crap, nevermind what I said. This game looks like a sequel to Sin & Punishment. The enemies are gigantic.
Wow, I'm getting this.

I really want this to come to the US, just because of the scale and you can destroy buildings, which is always fun. That being said, I really dislike the ant sequences, they look cheap and they just disappear after being shot.

I bought it. Cool concept, but it's execution was kind of crappy. Hopefully that was a good learning experience though, and this will turn out to be good. I'm hoping for it!

Such a cool concept, glad they got a platform where they can do something with it. Too bad it's not a platform I own.
EDF 2 was a budget title for the ps2 in Japan, hence importation was(when I looked it up) reasonable.
I make no guarantee any of these links work nor am I endorsing any of them.

Well if you look towards the end of the the first Japanese Trailer, they specifically show a split screen Co-op mode and the voiceover girl says that 'naturally there is offline mode for two people'. However, they don't mention any online co-op capability. They do say in the 2nd trailer that 'this time you fight on a team' but then they write on the screen that these teammates are AI controlled.
The voice bubbles over their heads corresponds to the radio chatter you hear in the trailer, such as AI teammates yelling 'Fire! Fire!'

Nothing in the newspost suggested that this was a 360 game, I assumed it was for the PS2 right up until the final paragraph.
EDIT: Okay, just checked one of the trailers. I don't know what to say. Looks rather terrible. :p

That's the one! It looked so weird it might have been a lot of fun. Alas, we never saw it over here :(
And R.A.D. love! That is the one game, of the thousands of PS2 games released, that I am STILL kicking myself for not picking up when it was available. I was suffering from a strange bout of fiscal restraint when it was out and for some strange reason never picked it up. Sigh.

You know, I had a friend who imported EDF 1 or 2 for the PS2 and he raved about it. I'm interested in trying this one out if it makes it to the States.
Edit: Also, I think the EDF games are a "budget" line in Japan...might explain the less than spectacular graphics

I've never heard of Robot Alchemic Drive. Is this game like a sequel, as far as you can tell?
This looks more like a spiritual successor than a sequel. RAD was basically an homage to awesome anime series', most notably Neon genesis. Each level was like an episode, and the plot was ridiculous yet awesome. The gameplay is what I really loved about it, though.
You played as a kid who had the remote control for a giant robot, and you had to defeat other giant alien robots. The control was neat because the analog sticks controlled the robot's arms, the shoulder buttons controlled the legs, etc. What made it great was how it was implemented. You ran around the level as the kid and got on top of buildings and such to get a good vantage point, and when you press select, the camera changes to first person and you're controlling and looking at your robot, still from the kid's eyes. With the controller corresponding to different parts, it was a genius mechanic. You had to get to a good vantage point so you'd be able to see your robot as well as the enemy, but you didn't want to get too close in case a punch sent one of them flying into the building you're on, or right on top of you. So a big part of the battle is where you'll position yourself for it.
The real beauty of this was that it really gave a sense of scale to the game. Most giant robot/monster games are from the point of view of the giant things, so it looks like any ordinary game, but the people just look really tiny as opposed to the robots looking huge. In RAD, it was all from the point of view of the normal human, which made everything seem huge.
But, like Perigon said, it was a little too much for the PS2 to handle. I could see it getting stale unless (like me) you were REALLY into it. I may honestly be its biggest fan.
What this all boils down to is that it looks like many of my wishes are coming true with Earth Defense Force 3. All that RAD needed, I thought, was more horsepower, and that's exactly what it looks like EDF3 got. If you get to control giant robots in it, too, then I may just be the happiest boy in the whole wide world. I cannot wait.

Personally, I think R.A.D. needed a good editor to go over it and cut out some of the garbage levels that were rather boring to trudge through, just to get to some giant-robot ass kicking scenes. Like every level was a kick in the head, something you had to put up with to get to the fun part of the game. The power of the PS2 really has nothing to do with my complaints, as the frame rate was fine, and the graphics were good enough.
Anyhow, I bought it used for like $15, so I have no major complaints about the purchase :p But I never finished it. One thing I would of added onto the mechanics would of been to be able to change standing-position of your character, so that you could have him/her lay down and look over the edge of a building, and then down the street.
Did anyone else play Robot Alchemic Drive? Am I the only one? I love that damn game.
Played it and loved it and also imported their recent DS, mech, game (as well as the othe EDF games on PS2)--I love Sandlot!

EDF2 is one of the best games on the PS2. I'm really hoping this sees release in the US (even without Pale Wing, which kind of sucks). This game is going to be amazing.
