Anadtech has all the gory details of Sony's PS3 unveiling, check it out here (http://anandtech.com/tradeshows/showdoc.aspx?i=2417)
When Microsoft introduced the Xbox 360, they did so with a complete media blitz - combining their MTV special with their ourcolony.net viral marketing online, not to mention all of the leaks that kept all surfers busy for the past several months. Sony's approach is a bit different; they've been extremely quiet about the new platform and their marketing has been kept to a minimum. But don't confuse Sony's quiet demeanor with a lack of things to talk about, in fact, Sony actually had a lot more to talk about than Microsoft...

Well well well! I've heard so many people claim backward compatibility was not a big selling point, I was getting worried none of the next-gen consoles would go for it... But now the PS3, Revolution AND X360 will be backward compatible? AWESOME!
This way I can keep my number of consoles crowding the television to 3. :)

There were 13'000 PS1 and PS2 games? Where there really that many games made? Are they counting versions for different territories?

PS3 will have one of (if not the) largest libraries to date. PS1, 2, and 3 games!?! i know it isnt that big of a suprise but its nice.
really makes me cuckle though: i was at gamestop today and a normal schmuk walks in and the over zealous sales man immediatly spots him as prime bait (the employees have a way of picking out the people that dont know what the hell they are doing in a game store) and started bullshitting the XBox 360 and shitting on the PS3 like nobodys business, all because they are taking preorders for the 360. he said and quote " the 360 will be backwards compatable, but the PS3 will not be, so you'll get screwed if you get that system"....HAHAHAHA i love both of what these two systems have to offer, but honestly do you have to lie to people, or atleast dont tell them straight up shit when you dont even know.
i proceeded to confront the sales man on his statement asking him why it wouldnt be backwards compatable, and he said "because sony will not be able to fit that feature on because they decided it would cost too much" ok so how would he even know what features PS3 would have if the press conference hadnt even occured yet, and then the fact that he acts to know inside sony info...
sorry for this tangent it just really irks me when people are lying to other people about video game stuff like this just to sell something...

You guys are missing the most important part 1080p resolution, and it supports dual-displays. I'm going to need a better tv. Do they even make HD tvs that can run at 1080p?

Aye. Misrepresentation really pisses me off in game stores, especially on things like this that haven't even been confirmed anywhere.
I've said it before, but backwards compatibility is a big selling point for me as I don't have a tonne of space for 80 different consoles and also have a rather large library of games for all systems.
The PS2's backwards compatibility feature is one of the things that sold me on it when it launched as I had pretty much sat out the PS1 era and this gave me an opportunity to pick up the best of the best of the PS1 games, which I do still play to this day.

I'm sorry, but very few PS1 games are worth playing these days. It seems like games were just thrown out the door rapidly during that generation, and many turned out to be crap. I mean sure, there are some definate winners that are great to have around still like Metal Gear Solid, and FFT... But far and away most of them are not worth the time of day. Not sure if backwards compatability is worth the effort in that respect... On the other hand, people can pawn off their consoles or give away as hand-me-downs.

Because people who work in Gamestores/Electronics Stores they think they know more than us who spend more time reading about games than they do playing them. It's completle bullshit too. I've argued with one guy many times who continues to claim that the PS3 is coming out in August of this year in the US -.-

Most of the gamestores around me are actually really well-staffed with nice and knowledgeable workers, so I don't have problems like this often, but once I was at a Gamestop and asked the clerk if they had any DVD-Rs in the back or anything, since it looked like they only had +s out. He told me that they don't exist, the only kind of burnable DVD is DVD+R, and that he should know, he's a computer technician. I was seriously mindboggled. I just went "Yeah... what.... no... but... uh, alright. bye."

Ah cut them some slack. I've worked retail, though not a game store. It's not easy. You're told to sell things you can't possibly be expected to sell, you have quotas to meet, and you wouldn't believe the amount of misinformation that flies around. If you want to blame someone for the state of game stores, try the businesses and the upper managements.
People seem to think when you work retail you're sent to some special school where they tell you all about product x, y, and z. Odds are many of these guys aren't even in to gaming, it's just their job to sell it. And to answer 24 times a week if PS2 games will work in a DVD player.
I like to think I was great at customer service, had many happy customers and was glad to answer tech questions. Sadly, it's sells of the profit items like extended warranties and pre-orders that count in the retail world, not support. Hence the tendency to find more sellsmen than gamers.

I can echo Rirath's statements... I still work in sales and I hate it bitterly because my knowledge is only appreciated by my customers.
Fellow employees and management doesn't give a crap because I don't sell as well as some of the other people do (e.g. I don't lie as good).

By the way...
This PS3 design looks a little like the phantom. It also looks a bit retro.

I wish they'd change it, nonetheless, it's still one bad ass machine.

Hell yeah, we all have to drop $1000 in order to continue playing console games. Awesome!
I'm seriously underwhelmed by the launches of both consoles.

Speaking of that, did the Phantom have a stall this year? Or did i miss the news that they finally spent all their money?

ya, but there's VERY few of them. I know Toshiba has one, and I believe Samsung has one. Look for more 1080p TVs later this year and early next year.

Dual-screen support. Awesome.

1080p will be supported as bout as much as 1080i was this gen.
Dual Screen will be awesome, though, if supported frequently for Co-Op play.

Actually, Kutaragi (or possibly Hirai) confirmed a few months ago that the PS3 would play at least PS2 games. So the guy was ignorant or lying.
