Isn't this interesting... Grabbed this off of MSNBC:

^THE FOLLOWING MATERIAL IS EMBARGOED FOR RELEASE AT 10:30 p.m. EDT
At a Monday evening news conference, Microsoft unveiled further details on upcoming games.
It plans to have between 25 and 40 games available for the Xbox 360 by the end of the year, including ''Final Fantasy XI,'' a sequel to the wildly popular Japanese role-playing game. Microsoft also said Electronic Arts, the world's largest video game publisher, would be releasing a lineup of games, including ''Madden NFL.''
The company said it would not release pricing details until late summer or fall, but said ''Xbox 360'' would be backward compatible with approved games for the original Xbox.

Things just got interesting.

As I pointed out in the other place this was posted, its entirely incorrect in its current form.

FFXI already exists as a PC/PS2 MMO.

Shenanigans!

Final Fantasy XI is an MMO already released and FFXII is already announced for the PS2.

EA ports to every console.

This is news?

Maybe they're coming out with a FFXI that I'll actually like. <stares blankly at his preordered FFXI box for the PC>

What do they mean with "approved" games for the original XBox? Is Microsoft making a list of games they don't approve of so the 360 can prevent you from playing them?

I'm guessing Microsoft is only testing so many games with the 360. They'll be approved and guaranteed to work. The rest, you are probably going to play at your own risk.

Better than nothing, I guess. Means I won't have to buy an existing Xbox for Conker probably.

I have a feeling it will work with pretty much all xbox1 games, but it may have small glitches or something in certain places?

I wouldn't be too concerned about it.

yea going backwards is important but i imagine more concern will be given to the new games

Microsoft's not-so-official list of backwards compatible games for the Xbox 360:

- Halo
- Halo 2

More games to be added in the years ahead!

If it is FFXI and not FFXIII or some such, then my interest just waned conciderably.

If it's a new, exclusive Final Fantasy, then I'm VERY interested. Granted, given that 12 still hasn't shipped and is going to be PS2 exclusive, I'm not rushing out to get a 360 right away. If it's FFXI, then more power to them. I lost interest in that after a month of losing as much XP as I'd gain over and over again. Nice game, brutal death penalty.

And the EA/Madden announcment. Gee. That's a newsflash. EA puts things on everything.

Well, it's past 10:30 EDT... is this up on the site? Where'd you find this originally?

I'm thinking the Final Fantasy thing was either a typo on the numerials, or a misunderstood message by the writer. Could of been referring to that game Toriyama is working on with former Square employees, or maybe an offshoot FF game like Crystal Chronicles. Who knows...? I think we're gonna have to wait before passing any kind of judgement on this one, because I'm almost positive something is amiss with that article.

engadget mentioned the limited backwards compatibility in their live Microsoft coverage, so maybe this is legit. reckon we'll see.

and for real, don't talk shit on cereal. There's few things better in life than a visit with the Cap'n.

InstaPete, we've never met.

IGN claims the backwards compatibility is through emulation for certain popular games. It won't be every game or even most games since they have to write an emulator for each one.

also, IGN is confirming the Final Fantasy XI (no typo)

edit : and maybe we should, capnbob. ;)

Well Im still playing FFXI. Like the game hate the EXp penalty ( they did make it a bit better). It will be nice to not have to type all the time to my friends. and to have cleaner graphics and such.

it'll be like ps2's backward compatibility probably. all games will work, some with glitches.

It seems pretty official (http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/05/16/news_6124746.html) now. This is big news? Did anyone expect the Xbox 360 not to launch with a healthy amount of games? The big question here, as it will (and should be) with the PS3 and Revolution is, what will the good games be? None of these systems are going to have a launch of 30 games that you would actually want to own.

As for Final Fantasy XI? I guess it's exciting, if you like torturing yourself with excessive hard-leveling and all the other aspects of most MMORPGS that make them feel more like work than fun. Weren't people predicting a long time ago that Square would try to get this game on all three major platforms at some point (plus the PC)?

shouldn't that be FF XII?

They also announced continued support of the x360. I'll be looking forward to their future games moreso that FFXI.

For this to be an interesting story, yes it should. But it isn't.

Ports of multiplatform games from several years ago? Wow, X360 has it all.

You are all looking at the here and now. This announcement really means that MS is gaining japanese support in hopes of getting better sales over there this time around. This also puts a hurting on Sony because until now Squenix has been their bitch. If they start crossplatforming FF/Dragon Quest/Front Mission (giggles like a school girl) games then Sony will have to fight MS for the Hardcore RPGers. The fact that this is a 2 year old port doesn't mean diddily. The fact that is a hardcore MMORPG from a serious Japanese game publisher is what this announcement is all about. If Squenix is hoping on board, others won't be far behind. I honestly see this as a diabolical kick to the gonads of Sony's Japan market.

I'm sorry, but I'm ganking that for my new away message. I just showed my wife and got slapped, but it was totally worth it. Best. Quote. Eva'

Anyhow, I have to admit I'm somewhat excited by this. I actually enjoyed FF XI until the HDD for my PS2 passed out on me and I wasn't able to play anymore (at the time my PC was enough to maybe run the original Doom). The Exp penalty was crap, but I still enjoyed the game. Not sure if this would make me pick it up again, but it wouldn't hurt to at least have that option. Good news for me at least.

And, if Square-Enix is putting this on 360, there's at least a chance they'll put something new on it. Hopefully it just isn't FF:CC cause, come'on....

I own the ps2 and PC versions of FFXI, so whats the X360 going to offer me? The only thing I can think of is graphic imporvements over the ps2 version, that would be on par with my PC version.

I am thrilled that Square will be making games for them, my choice seems clearer now (unless they are going to multi-port games, which square really hasn't done yet). But why FFXI, I am not shelling out another 50 bucks for improved graphics when I already have it on my PC.

Yeah, I think most people are missing the part that got my attention, the mention that other Square titles might appear on the 360. Plus, this just proves that there will be serious MMORPGs on consoles this generation.
