View Full Version : Weekend Gamer: What are you playing?

The holiday season upon us, it will consume our time as much as the games we will be playing. Since I am done with my shopping (except a few things from a website), I plan on playing more Gothic 3 (which I am loving). Which games will you be playing this weekend or will you be stuck shopping?
Also, don't forget to visit the "Weekend Gamer: What do you want?" (http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?p=536511#post536511)on the forum pages to share your wish list.

Family will be in town, so I'll probably get some Lego Star Wars II co-op, maybe a little Gears co-op. And sweet, sweet Ouendan. Can't wait for Santa to bring me my copy of Elite Beat Agents.
I'll also be closely watching the USC/UCLA, hoping USC doesn't screw things up.

I don't know. Started San Andreas again this week on the 360. I might run down to my cousin's game store and see if I can get a nice deal on a used 360 game or two.

Speaking of SC: DA, if anyone wants to do those co-op challenges let me know. I have never played any form of SC multi so I'm a total noob, also from what I gather it isn't really possible to do those solo.

i'm continuing nwn2, surprisingly fun game.
I am very hesitent on getting NWN2. Is it better than one, not as broken? And how is the ending - satisfying or not... I didn't finish NWN 1 because I got bored (if I remember correctly).

i just started act 2 last night, not sure how many acts there are.
so far its been fun. if you didn't like nwn1 then you probably won't care for nwn2. it feels exactly like the first game to me quite honestly. i don't see anything different other than fancier graphics.
not sure what they hell they were developing all this time.
anyway, i still like the game very much. but i still find the constant level/door loading to be quite annoying, i can't believe that they haven't bothered to get rid of that method. that's the stupidest thing about their whole engine. i like the story however, i'm playing on normal difficulty and my main char only died once so far (first time i ran into that whirling blades spell and wasn't paying attention) surprisingly though my henchies managed to kill the baddies by themselves and let me continue without losing any progress (without reloading i mean).
i loved nwn1 though, never had problems with it either. so ymmv

I finished Twilight Princess last night. What a great game. It met almost all my expectations, most of which bordered on the ridiculous.
I'll be taking my Wii up to a friend's house tonight for some Wii Sports action. Should be a good time. After that I'll work on Gears of War on insane mode, play a bit of R6: Vegas and farm some gold in WoW to get a bit closer to my epic mount. Hot damn, I love the weekend.

Finishing up a rental, Marvel:UA.
Viva Pinata - need to send some ducks to all on my friends list
Robotron - cuz it rules
Lost Planet Demo - played a few games last night and need to play some more. Plus, this will be the only time I see snow this winter.
Medieval II: Total War on very hard/very hard. Europe will soon be crushed beneath the might of the Reich! After that I'll restart as someone new, maybe the Byzantines or the Turks. I'll be looking forward to that terrifying day when I'm told the Timurids are massing for their invasion.
Probably some FFIII on the DS, too.

I finally got my 260 back, so I'll be playing some catch-up. GoW, R6V, The Outfit, CoD2, and Nightfire(looks fantastic on the 360). And on the PC I'll be playing BF2142 and CoH. Now whether I actually get to playing these games, is a totally different matter.

I have played it more than Gears, and I love Gears. For my money, VP is my 360 game of the year.
As for this weekend, I'll think I'll play.....Final Fantasy Tactics. Or maybe Kingdom Hearts, even though so far I am really really really REALLY not liking it (the stupid spaceship parts, and the combat just isn't all that fun). I only paid 10 bucks for it though, so oh well.

Rainbow Six: Vegas - I usually hate tactical shooters, but Rainbow Six lets me sort of play sniper on a grand scale with my little minions that I use to flush out bad guys as if they were quail. Also it really delivers on all fronts with quality graphics, story, gameplay, and multiplayer. :)

Viva Pinata!! My garden recently suffered a terrible loss, I lost 6 pinata in quick succession to a combination of Dastardos (due to 4 pinata's eating toadstool which I didn't know was poisinous), an evil Sour Crow, and 2 hunting pinata's, but I'm back up now.
Gears of War - I'm still trying to get good enough to at least kill 1 person a match..
Zelda. The effect of being a wolf is cool, but Okami beat them to the punch.

Probably some Zelda, Wii Sports, and Jedi Academy. I've got a lot of work to do though, so I don't expect to put too much time into any of them. Last night a tried an online game called Albatross18. It is a fantasy golf sim, but it suffers from most of the same crap that all online games from Asia suffer from: anything good has to be purchased with real money, and a lot of the player base are complete jack-asses.
In my first game, I was winning so the other guy left after he screwed up a putt on the third hole. In my second game, I found I was in a teams match (I was randomly invited). I still didn't really understand putting, and my partner was a complete ass to me the whole time. Didn't take long before I got tired of her abuse. So, I said fuck it, dropped out after the fourth hole, and uninstalled the game immediatly. I won't recommend it to anyone.

Eh, for the next few months, a PS2 is all you need. You've still got Rogue Galaxy (easily my most anticipated game for any system that's been announced) and God of War 2 coming early next year. Not to mention Dawn of Mana, which may or may not be good, we'll see when it's released in Japan later this month.

Zelda, WiiSports (if friends drop by), and Mario Kart DS (multiplayer with siblings who all just recently got a DS and Mario Kart). Oh... and I rented Call of Duty 3 for Wii.
I sure hope developers try a bit harder on Wii graphics soon. I understand the focus on play control first and foremost, but so many of these games are not using the hardware at all. I know it's not going to compete with 360 or PS3, but it should be looking better than GC, not worse. COD3 seems like it's going to be fun, but the graphics are definitely a bit hard on the eyes. And Far Cry on the Wii looks like a N64 game. Uh... guys... if you can't do better than that we're just going to laugh at you.
Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3 both "look" promising. These games are more along the lines of what I was expecting from the hardware. Can't wait to see what Capcom does with their next Resident Evil game on Wii.

Ah, sweet Ouendan indeed. I'm sure you'll enjoy EBA but I don't know... I still find the way that the game plays out with the songs in EBA to be far less satisfying than in Ouendan. The rhythms just seem off, and I'm playing on Hard where there isn't as much empty space between notes.
I'm working this weekend so I'll probably just play a lot more FFV:Advance (like I've been doing every night at work) and read some more Squadron Supreme. When I do get a spare moment here at the homestead, I'll work on Splinter Cell: Double Agent for the Xbox. I finally got around to hooking my Xbox up to the HDTV and am quite happy with the results. Plus, Double Agent is shaping up to be yet another really fun Splinter Cell game. I don't know why I wasn't really looking forward to this game in the series, esp. given my previous love of all things Splinter Cell... Thankfully it's really, really good so far. I'm only just finishing the Prison level, so I'm near the beginning, but I like it so far.
I might work on FFXII a bit near the end of the weekend but I'd really like to try to finish up that Splinter Cell game in the next week so I can send it back to the rental guys and get something else. FFXII will have to wait until then.
I might also play some Uplink or Oblivion if the TV is being used by the family. I really need to restart Oblivion and try it as a melee type instead of my usual spellcaster. That game just sits there, taunting me every day.

I did buy Sonic to test out the whole shopping experience and I have to say, I'm very happy with the system, the playability and the faithfulness of the Virtual Console. I am NOT happy with the price.
I LOVE the convenience factor of flipping over to the Sonic channel and getting in a quick game.
Edit: Also for convenience, I keep all my consoles in a closet and use wireless controllers and switches to channel the image / sound from the systems to the projector and sound system. Every time I play the PS2, it means I have to get up and shuffle into the closet, power the damn thing on. With the 360 and Wii, I can turn on / off the system from my sofa.
That sucks.

That's my problem. I'll go on and on here about why the Wii isn't worth owning yet and there's still no games for at least six months. Then, of course, if I see one, I know I'll have a hard time not picking it up. It helps knowing that I'll pick one up eventually, just no need to get one now.

It helps knowing that I'll pick one up eventually, just no need to get one now.Unless you plan waiting for a price drop, what's the harm in picking up one now? It isn't like it will be your ONLY game machine. When the titles you ARE interested in picking up come out, you can get'em right away.
Sell your Cube and make $30. Do you REALLY think there will be a price drop in 6 months? The thing is selling like gangbusters, getting OODLES of good press and the competition is WAY more expensive. Price drop won't come for a long time.

A whole mess of Wii goin' on this weekend. I'll be playing Zelda, Trauma Center, Wii Sports, Monkeyball, and Rayman. We'll have a full group of four finally and we'll be able to give Tennis a real try. I can't wait!!! :D

FFXII here. About 45+ hours in, need to level up some more characters (The benchwarmer 3 are to low, to big a level difference). Hit some more marks, and then continue on with the plot! After that comes Zelda.
I've been reading that you don't really need to level up all the characters, but if you do it's good to put it off until you got some EXP doubling armlets.

gonna probably be playing R6: Vegas, WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2007, maybe some more Gears and start on Call of Duty 3. Also gonna try getting some more achievements in DOA4 and PGR3.

Unless you plan waiting for a price drop, what's the harm in picking up one now? It isn't like it will be your ONLY game machine. When the titles you ARE interested in picking up come out, you can get'em right away.
Sell your Cube and make $30. Do you REALLY think there will be a price drop in 6 months? The thing is selling like gangbusters, getting OODLES of good press and the competition is WAY more expensive. Price drop won't come for a long time.
Nah, not at all. It's just money better spent elsewhere at the moment. I plan on picking up both a Wii and PS3 around Aprilish when the PS2 games finally dry up and they both have worthwhile games for them. As for right now, I've got more than enough to keep me busy.

I swear you work for Nintendo or own stock the way you shill them so. Nothing wrong with loving Nintendo, just that you seem to be the EvAv Nintendoid. That isn't an insult, just an observation. I see you make comments like, "It's good to see you enjoying such a great game (Zelda)," but you constantly overlook great games on other consoles (like Okami). Just a bit strange.
Oh, and the competition is also next-gen, in terms of graphics and games. The Wii is like a last-gen system selling at near next-gen prices. And it's current figurehead IS a last gen game with a new control scheme.

This makes sense to me. Even if consoles never dropped in price, it isn't always prudent to buy them right away. Why? Like with my 360, I bought one game with it in March and proceeded to not touch it until middle of July and then August. After that it was November. If you buy a console when there are tons of games around, you are always content, you don't have to wait months for the next game release, and then wait again. Also, launch machines are notorious for being unreliable, or at least have the potential to be so.
Patience is a virtue. Good things come to those who wait. Gaming is no different.

The reason I don't want a Wii right now is because Smash Bros hasn't been released yet. If I can be called a fanboy of anything, it would be Smash Bros. Plus, a good reason to wait, even if the price isn't going to change, is that you'll save money on games. If I had a Wii right now, I'd pick up Zelda too, no doubt about it. Then, when the next great game came out, I'd probably get that too. By waiting though, by the time you do get a Wii, Zelda and plently of other games should be cheap! Then you can make a huge pile of games and beat none of them, like what I am doing with the PS2.

Metroid Pinball, Meteos, maybe start Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced for the first time... That would require actual free time though.

I really don't feel like any of this next-gen/last-gen dichotomy really applies as much as people want it to. Regardless of the fact that the PS2 is apparantly "last gen" and the PS1 is now retro, I still play PS1/PS2 games that feel perfectly modern.
I know that's not what you were saying, but I'm just playing around with how to say that better.
Zelda's so good. Man.

Wowsers, free time is an understatement in regards to Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. Good luck with that game; I quit at about 87 hours in.

Just got the Dragon Ball Z game for Wii from a rental service (GameFly). I haven't completed the training yet, but I'm lovin' it!
Never watched the show for an entire episode but this thing is great! It feels like a crazy, tripped-out Japanese superhero fighting game that crosses Virtual On and Power Stone! Once you start pulling off some of the advanced moves, and they DO get complex, you can't help but crack a grin. It is FUN! There is an awesome pace to the battle and the learning curve, while steep, shows off the depth of the engine.
My weekend plans changed.

-Still Children of Mana (Having trouble with one of the bosses) (DS)
-Soul Blazer (PSP emulation)
-Lumines 2 (PSP)
If I can get that game out of my PSP, I could also give Every Extend Extra some playtime as well.
These Weekend Gamer threads always catch me off guard. :D

The way the game is structured, you could try to do it a mission at a time. Maybe two or three jobs a day if you're pressed for time. You can play for the long haul, or just a little bit at a time (making sure to save every now and then). That's what I love about FF Tactics Advance.
Having completed the game myself (around 240 hours logged in), if you're not careful, you'll be hooked for quite some time. ;)

I picked up the Everquest 2 expansion "Echoes of Faydwer".
I'm surprised at how much this game has changed since its release.
Fun game.. kudos to Sony.

I have a convertible. Sometimes it goes for months without having the top popped. Yet when a warm day unexpectedly rolls in on a weekend, it sure is nice to drive with the sky.

I just finished Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil on the PC and Dragon Quest Rocket Slime on the DS. Rocket Slime was OK. It had frequent boring and uninspired tank battles that dulled the action. Next up is Mario vs Donkey Kong 2 on the DS.

Yeah, it's actually very friendly that way. Just tinker away at it bit by bit and eventually you'll get to the end.
I still have all of the bonus missions to work on that you open up once you complete the game. One of these days I'll get to it. Thankfully I have FFV to keep me occupied instead. As much as I love FFTA (and it seems like I'm in the minority here on the boards) I don't tend to like going back to games that I have finished. I always feel like I'm wasting time that could be spent on new games!

Wii Sports and Excite Truck. I have Zelda but am waiting for my component cables to come in. Or maybe I should start it so I can compare the quality difference. Yeah! That's a great idea! Glad I thought of it!
*Edit* Jeez, looks like I need to update my EA Wii codes as well.

In case you haven't noticed Spigot  , I'm in that minority as well. (for FFTA) ;)
And I hear you on the moving on to different games bit. Only I feel like I can never get a chance to replay some of the good titles that I've come across because I'm pressed for time, or there's always a game I need to finish, or run across a new one to play. :(
