Gamespot (http://www.gamespot.com/index.html) was able to get a little hands-on (http://www.gamespot.com/wii/action/farcry/news.html?sid=6162489&mode=recent)action with Far Cry Vengeance.
The first thing we noticed about the Wii version of the game was that its graphics are comparable to those in the aforementioned Xbox game, with beach environments and thick vegetation that will be instantly recognizable to anyone who has played the Xbox version. Gamespot has also posted the hands-on gameplay video (http://www.gamespot.com/wii/action/farcry/media.html?mode=all).
If only I had a Wii, I'd be more excited. Game dated release is December 5th.

I'm actually almost excited about this title. I loved it on X-Box and can only imagine what the Wii-mote controls will do for the already good gameplay. Still, this will no doubt be a rent-before-buy game.

If it has online multiplayer than I'm sold on it.
If it has online multiplayer than I'm sold on it.
I remember at some point, ubisoft *did* state online multiplayer, i'm also assuming this is what Reggie meant by "online games early next year" as well as the reason the title was delayed.
I played the original, original farcry when it was first released for the PC. Apparently vengeance is a tweak upon the tweak (Instincts) of farcry. So, if it has online multiplayer. I'm sold.
That, and with my experience with Red Steel, i just love using the Wii-mote to aim, it's almost mouselike precision. Wonderful to me.

Haven't they been re-releasing this game for a year or so now? I can't imagine the Wii version is going to differ in any manner other than the controls.

Though the game is based off the original, it's just not a port. Xbox version had added features and so does the Wii version.
...three new maps that have been shoehorned into the story-driven single-player mode. Other new features for the game will include several weapons and a handful of new vehicles, including the new Jeep Patriot. This version is very close to the Xbox version so it isn't as distinct as the Xbox was from the PC, but it isn't merely being rehashed onto the Wii.

Turn speed is way too slow. Hope you can increase the sensitivity, or have a button to centre the screen.

Yeah, what Ubi has done to Far Cry is why Crytek is at EA now.

I have trouble believing that video is real.
I mean Gamespot said its comparable to the Xbox version, which was quite nice looking. That video isn't last gen, its last last last last gen. As in 1991-era PC shooter graphics. The original Half Life looks way better.
All the same, I couldn't really give a rats ass about the graphics right now when it comes to Wii shooters. I just want the control scheme I've been envisioning for the past two years. I'm just hoping they get it right before Metroid Prime comes out.
You know what just occurred to me? There is one Gamecube shooter that seems custom made for the Wii. Killer 7.
Its on rails, so turning wouldn't be a problem, it was more about a bizarre art style that graphics power, the PS2 and Cube aiming controls were clunky, but it would well with the Wii, and it used a lot of bizarre puzzles that the Wiimote could use well. I got the game and wasn't thrilled with it (though definately bizarre and creative). I'm starting to think it was just a generation too early.

Yeah, I gotta agree with Philly. This looks neither pretty nor fun.

Oh my god, Philly, no joke. I thought this might be good after that little video they released a month back. But this... just looks bad. Brain dead AI, enemies (human enemies) that all look and sound EXACTLY THE SAME, and.. these graphics are comparable to the XBox version? Really? I never played that one but I guess it must have looked bad... Cause yeah. Muddy textures, loads of pop-in, terrible lighting.
Yes, it's about the gameplay and not the graphics but when a game looks like a step BACK from the previous generation, you have to draw a line.
Just watch that video Philly posted.

I hope Metroid sets people right on how to make a first person game on the Wii.

The four gameplay videos linked from Gamespot don't look amazing, but they do look better than the one from GameTrailers.
EDIT: Nevermind. In the 3rd gameplay movie (at least the filename ends in 3), an enemy up on a balcony runs PAST a mounted machine gun in order to get to the stairs to run straight at you and get gunned down.
If the AI is actually that bad, that's completely inexcusable.
I fully believe the Wii can make a good game more fun, but it's not going to turn shit into gold. :(

Holy god, who's trying to sell a 64 game on the Wii?

Random,
In my opinion, all the Wii games look like utter shit. Except Monkey Ball. That looks bright and fresh. Watching the ground textures and awkward gun movements in this game just makes me ill.

And the AI has to be dumbed down, when your turn radius is slower than a 70 year old in a walker.

The Wii should stay away from "classic" FPS games (especially if they exist on other consoles). I mean... people will compare this to GoW...

This game needs a lot of work if they're planning on launching it anytime soon... I'm hoping this is some kind of beta build they showed, because that looked really bad. The textures of that house he started in looked so drab and lifeless, just brown muddy textures all over. The outside environments looked okay, not great, but it seemed to do alright.
But the AI was just dumb for the most part, the aiming I couldn't tell for sure, I'd rather feel it for myself then make a preliminary judgement from a video I see. Maybe it'd be better if they further delayed it in order to make sure the game looks as good as it can without overstressing the system.
If Nintendo can make games with good visuals (I'm referring to Zelda and Mario Galaxy) then surely these people can too.

So I expect what we saw is based on those conditions.
Honestly I've been underwhelmed by this game and most launch titles. The games I choose to get for the Wii are quite limited but this game is high on my potentially-to-get list since (if my logic makes sense) this game has already been a success on the Xbox (and the PC but it's slightly different). Though we aren't sure how the game has actually translated, we do know how it has been polished and how it will potentially play compared to those other launch titles like Red Steel.

Fair enough, but turning around doesn't have to take 4 minutes, that's a calibration issue. CoD3 hasn't been "dumbed down" for the Wii, and I'm willing to bet you Metroid Prime 3 won't be. This isn't "OMG the Wii can't handle shooters!", this is "Wow, those videos make the dev team look like they made a really incompetent port."

To be fair, almost every port of a next-gen game to the Wii looks weak. The hardware doesn't compare to the 360 or PS3, and they (both Nintendo and the developers) should really be smarter about the whole thing.
Why bother with Far Cry on the Wii? Why not do some additional work so it's a new game, one that won't be compared directly to far better looking versions? I mean it's pretty telling that it's compared to the Xbox version, not the 360 on.
The Wii is not competing with the Xbox or PS2 - it's going up against the 360 and the PS3. The controls can make up for some of the graphical disparity between the ports, but not this level.

Why bother with Far Cry on the Wii?
For my part? The controller. I think once the kinks get worked out, the controller will do for the Wii, what the N64 and DS controllers did: Make for some badass FPS games by delivering a control scheme and set up that almost beautifully mirrors the capabilities of a mouse and keyboard.
The fact that the Wii is only $250, compared to $400 to the real 360 and $500-600 for a PS3, is also a definite factor.
The fact that I'm not a whiny graphics whore, and that I tend to think art trumps tech every time, is also a factor.

What games are you speaking of? Because I would really like to play them.
I'm sure you didn't mean GoldenEye, because that game's control scheme doesn't even approach the mouse-keyboard combo in terms of utility.

The N64 stick is simply the most accurate analog stick ever implemented on a console controller. Goldeneye is great if you switch to the 1.2 scheme. As ar Perfect Dark, the Turok games, Quake II, TWINE, even Daikatana controlled really well, even if the game itself was crap.
The accuracy and smoothness of the stick, compared with the keyboard esque use of the C buttons for movement, makes a perfect analogue for the mouse and keyboard setup.
The N64 is my favorite system for FPS ever. Much as I love the original Xbox, it pales in comparison, and the controller is why.
