Saw on the shack that id Software and Activision announced Enemy Territory: Quake Wars (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/37057) . It’s being developed Splash Damage (creators of Enemy Territory). The game features:
5 classes on Earth Defense Force and Strogg invasion force
40 conventional and futuristic vehicles
Deployable defenses and structures
Voice chat & context sensitive messaging system
Persistent awards and honors
Engine will utilize MegaTexture: “a totally new rendering technology developed by id Software that crunches millions of polygons and a gigabyte-scale texture into a single, seamless and un-tiled landscape with unique detail down to the square inch or the un-obscured distant horizon.”
Looks like a mix between Battlefield 1942 and Enemy Territory in the Quake universe. How can you not like that?

Awesome. Although that "screenshot" looks a little CG-ified.

The first few D3 games (aside from D3 itself) haven't even shipped yet!

Looks like a big contender for the Battlefield 2 audience, meaning... I want this :)

I think it's just an extension to the Doom3 engine that allows outside rendering. I wouldn't be surprised if Quake4 will utilize this as well.
Kokyunage said word for word what I was going to say, jerk :).
So I'd say those screenshots are in game and accurate.

Wait wait wait...
...sounds too good to be true (40 vehicles, turrets, voice chat, better engine) - fake?
EDIT: Nope! It's on the SplashDamage website, 100% confirmed - woohoo!
Now, which one to choose - BF2 or this? Hmm... I think I'm more into sci-fi than Iraq.

I am the resident id Software fanboy. In fact, that should be my tag. Time to put to use the donation I made...

Not to mention, I trust id Software/Splash Damage to actually optimize the game. I remember the entire performance fiasco when Battlefield 1 was released.

Golly Taco you almost gave me a heart attack.
At any rate I could not more excited about this game. I was just thinking that there really wasn't that much in the way of big multiplayer vehicle games out right now and BF2 the only one on the horizon and then this....
My only question is Who the heck is Splash Damage and can we trust them?

What's interesting about this news is that the multiplayer component of Quake 4 is going to be strong, but isn't going to include vehicles, according to CGM. It's supposed to be more along the lines of Q3:TA... so the products don't really conflict, but it's weird for them to co-exist at the same time. Unless Quake Wars is coming out fairly soon.

Splash Damage... I hate you..
I'm just sitting here this very moment and writing on an estimated 85% similar game concept.
(my personal dream game) minus the Strogg and Quake franchise part.
oh well.. guess it's back to real innovative concepts then.. :)
looking forward to play it..

Looking at the screen, it's a whole lot more too.

Technically I think this would be the Quake 2 Universe, as to my understanding the "story" of Quake 1 got dropped pretty quick. If I recall the game correctly "Quake" was actually the name of the general of the invading Hell forces or some such thing and the subsequent Quake games were going to have you fight increasingly higher ranked generals until you finally confronted and defeated Quake. Yeah, I can see why they went with something else too, though invading cyborgs is hardly any better.

man... did NOT see that coming. wasn't the original quake originally going to be something along these lines too?
looking forward to seeing more news on this

Nope, but considering how good ET is I'd be willing to pay full price for this. Well Quake 4 is using the Doom 3 engine which makes senses since the games have been as much of an indoor corridor fest as Doom. The Doom engine could never do something like this though since when you have more then a certain amount of light hitting a surface it chugs worse then a fatman covered in honey running a marathon with greased shoes. Don't think Quake was supposed to be like this though considering it wasn't even supposed to be the multiplayer hit it was.

betcha it will come out before Team Fortress 2.
lollers.
Quake 1 was supposed to be a 3D multiplayer RPG, and the main weapon was going to be a hammer (like Thor's) that would have done chain-damage as it jumped from enemy to enemy. Or so the legend goes.
I think by the time they delivered proof of concept (3D multiplayer over TCP/IP in Qtest1), the idea to merely improve on what made Doom great just stuck. And a consumer-level 3D graphic accelerator industry was born :)
I think Quake1 was more of a driving force in TCP/IP based multiplayer than 3d acceleration. It was one of a few games that sparked 3d acceleration. Personally, Tomb Raider 1 did it for me.

Edit.
Deleting my post cause I'm dumb and confused Team Fortress Classic with Team Fortress 2 :).

It's debatable, sure... but personally I think you could trace graphic card sales to whatever card was favored by John Carmack in his .plan files at the time. I would almost be willing to bet that 3dfx Voodoo cards were sold mainly to serve Quake 1. From that year (1996) and on, Carmack's comments helped build the graphic card industry by noting what features HE found important in a graphics card and what was useless. 3dfx and then Nvidia began hanging on his words as if they were gold (and they were).
