It's probably worth noting that these screens are from the official website:

There's also a cute little trailer.

I saw the screenshot and thought the first Animal Crossing Wii shots had been released :( I'm so disapointed. Anyhow, I really wish games like this would start using Miis instead of their own custom jobs.

I'm not sure I understand the change in art direction here. From what I understand, The Sims has been a huge hit with older women and this looks like a kids game.

Looks like they are going for a Japanese-friendly version of the title. I don't mind cutesie anime-style stuff, but why the super-deformed big heads and the low detail? Maybe they are trying to make this intigrated with the Mii channel stuff that is also super low detail.
I'll look at this again when we find out if they add in any new features. I don't have any reason to buy another Sims game - especially a low-detail one. . .

They're just taking it into a different direction. Not dissimilar to that Urbz console-only game they did, which I believe performed rather poorly in stores.
The full name is Boku to Sim no Machi.

The Urbz actually sold fairly well because it was based on The Sims, which is a winning IP. However, people hated it because the load times were awful, and the gameplay was repetitive, boring, and sometimes stupid (Oh better change my clothes so this OTHER group of unlikeable cliches will talk to me).

"Me and the Sim's 'Something'"... I'm blanking on what "Machi" Means...

"Machi" is "town", is it not?

Is the art direction because my Mii's actually live in this sims world? If that's the case then I totally forgive it. I need more interaction with my Mii
edit: viewing the pics more closely, it is not the case. Disappointment

Why on Earth do so many Wii titles look like N64 games? The system is definitely more powerful than that - seeing sub-Gamecube graphics is just mind boggling.

it really looks like they're aiming for the japanese market on this one.

I'd love to know why people keep saying that. Obviously I must of had a different N64 than everyone else, because it was never able to make shapes that smooth, or textures that defined... ever. Like, not even close.

They are referring to the low detail.
Maybe the fabled component cables will help my Wii experience, but I honestly feel like I'm playing an Xbox with interesting, but sometimes maddening, controls.

I just showed the video of this game to my daughter.
And to an 11 yr old, Magic Girl Manga Obsessed girl, it looked "Way Cool".
A case of getting the opinion of the games target market...

Except that the target market for The Sims (and what has made it such a success), has always been EVERYONE. You know, until now.

I don't think the sims really ever did that well, at least not on consoles. Generally they seemed to go much more for the home grown virtual pet, tamagotchi/Nintendogs/Idol/Princess making games.
I think the only console version of the sims I ever saw was The Urbz on DS, which got fair reviews, but didn't really sell too well. This makeover seems much more aimed at the Animal Crossing and that farming one that sold shitloads on GBA crowd.

I was referring more to the lack of detail than the textures. The textures are pretty plain too - just not blurry like the 64's were.
For supposedly being 2-3 times more powerful than the Gamecube, the Wii is pretty out some pretty plain looking games. This can be cool in something like Wii Sports, but I'd like to see something more games at least trying to look good. I'm not a graphics whore by any means, either.
