According to Computer And Video Games (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/), a near-final version of the PS3 hardware will be at E3 (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/r/?page=http://www.computerandvideogames.com/news/news_story.php(que)id=118573).
Speaking on conditions of strict anonymity, a trusted insider source has revealed to C&VG that Sony will unveil an actual prototype PS3 unit on their next-generation booth and that rather than just a mock up, it will be a near final design of the next generation of PlayStation.
It had better be very shiny.

After the PSP how could it not be?

Interesting. I was not expecting this, as the CELL processor is not scheduled to enter mass production until next year. I was thinking Sony might make a nice presentation and show a handful of games and then save the true unveiling for the Tokyo Game Show or some private event before really pouring on the heat at E3 2006. If this is true, this E3 just got even more interesting.

I am still going to take anything they show on it with hefty dose of skepticism, however, as all developers will have only had access to dev kits, which are traditionally considerably less powerful than the final product. Even the 360 stuff shown at E3 will be running on far lesser dev kits rather than the final system, and that is coming out in six months, not a year like the PS3. It will be interesting to see if Sony has rushed themselves in order to take some spotlight away from MS, or if they actually have something truly substantial to present.

The funny thing is that no matter what they show in terms of gameplay footage, it'll probably be indistinguishable from the x360 footage. It's gonna take a very well-trained eye to see the graphics differences this generation.

Especially with prerendered "estimates".

It looks like Sony is trying to deflate MS's 360 momentum with the PS3 like it did with the Dreamcast and PS2.

Well I think we probably would have seen a little more if Sony hadn't run into that spot of legal trouble and for various reasons cancelled all those PS3 related events they were supposed to have. Best I figured on seeing after all that though was likely a final prototype of the PS3 shell up on stage and a bunch of pre-rendered movies. You're right though that the PS3 launch games will probably stumble out of the gate like the PS2's did with the long amount of time it took developers to get aquainted with the proprietary chip. I have more faith in the 360's launch games tapping a better portion of the consoles power though, after all they're working on fairly standard hardware of which a fairly comparable dev kit could probably be provided.

Agreed though that the graphics are going to likely be fairly equal across the board, though graphical parody pretty much came about this generation after developers started to squeeze the PS2 for all it's worth, what these crazy fast processors are going to allow are the things we really haven't seen much yet. Truely realistic physics, destructible levels, dynamic facial expressions, and games that can truely morph to the players actions and those are the kinds of things that will be making games feel even more realistic or movie like.

The funny thing is, people still consider that important. :/

While graphics are still recieving far more attention than they deserve, I have been pleasantly surprised by the amount of work that developers are putting into incorporating destructible environments and vastly improved physics into their game. Early on, I assumed that this next generation would provide little more than a visual upgrade, but many titles that I have read about are throwing around phrases like 'fully destructible environments' and 'true to life physics'. Better yet, quite a few videos I have viewed appear to confirm that those words do have meaning. It is good to see that developers are using all of the extra processing power to improve the actual gameplay and not just the visuals.

Hell, i can barely discern Xbox vs. Ps2 graphics. Jeez, GT4 looks better than Forza. It makes my brain hurt trying to pick out games that look better. God of War looked great too. So if I was a graphics whore, which I'm not, I'd be hard pressed to decide on which system to own.

Luckily I dont have to. I own em all. But to me, gfx are a trite matter. That's because I own a good PC and know how astounding games can really look. Xfans bashing Sonyboys for bad gfx usually just makes me shake my head and chuckle. Idioso!

If you want to good demonstration of graphics ability, look at the PS2 and Xbox versions of Splinter Cell. They had to completely rework the game so that it could play on the PS2.

I bet you the PS3 will be there, in a sealed glass display unit protected by security guards and Sony reps. Pictures will be taken, jaws will drop, Ken Kutaragi will appear in a puff of smoke, and chaos will ensue.

What will most likely be on display, though, is the PS3 box with no innards - none, nada. It will he a hollow shell with nothing but Scotch tape and Elmer glue holding it together.

And all because Sony can't stand Microsoft being in the spotlight (and vice versa).

..and behind the curtain is a top-notch PC displaying software that'll probably surpass the X360 cabilities. Just to create hype.. even if it is fake.

LIVE! alone is worth the purchase for Xbox and hopefully should be even more so for 360

Yes, because a system with 3 3.2ghz CPU cores couldn't possibly do anything that was shown over the last few days.

On the other hand, during the announcement of the PS3, Sony reps will tout the system's ability to render graphics in real time like those found in Final Fantasy: Spirits Within...but then someone will tell them that they did that for the PS2 with few games that were ever able to get anywhere close to them, and they'll assassinate said person and stuff them in a closet..

The PC is a stolen proto-type super computer that manifests on human souls and harnesses Einstein's preserved brain for computing power. Clearly, this computer can topple X360's trio CPUs.

Smoke and mirrors.

My thoughts exactly. Still truly graphics will be completely second to story and gameplay finally in this round and hopefully all future consoles.

I'm waiting for the games of both systems. specs are nice but mean nothing to a good game.
