1up (http://www.1up.com) is reporting that Age of Empires (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3140490) for the Nintendo DS will be turn-based.

In actuality, Age of Empires: The Age of Kings removes the real-time and makes it turn-based, as players move from the Dark Ages to the Middle Ages as the Britons, Franks, Mongols, Saracens, or Japanese.

As soon as I saw the DS, I thought real-time strategy game. Now will someone please make one!? Also make Lemmings. :D

Turn-based strategy games are boring. :(

Dude! I owe you a cigar. You are, without a doubt, the first person to ever come up with a good use for the DS touch screen. Kudos for using your imagination.

The game I REALLY think should come out for the DS would be a flight game (like Starfox) but with bombing being one of your main forms of attack. One screen would be A behind view of your plane in the sky and the other would be a view of the ground below you (it could be in 2d like the original pilotwings). Anyone else with a legitimate use for this screen?

Tis a shame that the odds of Rockstar North making anything but "mature" games anytime soon is very very slim.

Tis a shame too, i wouldn't mind a Uniracers sequel while i'm dreaming.

Also, how can they make Age of Empires turn based? That just seems weird.. the DS has a close enough to a mouse interface...

I think if you're ever gonna show off the DS's capabilities, you need a killer-app real-time strategy game with internet and wireless play. The touchscreen lends itself to a very RTS-friendly design...I just wish developers would get on the bandwagon. Grr.

:: Crosses fingers for a WarCraft 3 port ::

It's a good thing no one mentioned a DS RTS (http://www.gamespot.com/ds/strategy/shogunwarriorthelostarmy/preview_6124380.html), especially on evilavatar.com (http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2107).

Anyway, did anyone pick up the DS Star Wars Episode 3? I remember reading that it has a mode with space flying of some sort. Is it anything like Tie Fighter? Please say yes, though saying no would be okay if yes would involve lying to me.

Well if they execute it well and turn it into a Civilization kind of thing that could really be awesome and would probably be reason enough for me to buy one. It is really puzzling that no one's working on a RTS, especially one in a big name series, since the lack of something similar to mouse control's really been what's kept them from being succesful on consoles. Now that Nintendo's finally taking the DS online a couple great RTS games with internet multiplayer would really help the DS since the PSP won't be seeing anything like that. I really wish Nintendo would get it going already since I'm still more eager to pick up a DS then a PSP, if only it had some games. :(

I don't undersstand making it turn based, when the Pocket PC version of it was real time, and worked just fine.

Personally, I like turn based strategy games better, so this is right up my alley. On a portable, you're likely to be easily distracted and have to save and quit at a moment's notice, so I think it's a solid design decision.

I picked up Star Wars Ep 3 for the DS. Yes, it does have space flying. Yes, it IS very much like X-Wing and Tie Fighter. You can do multiplayer with it, unlock some extra ships, and you can also just do single player skirms against the AI (which is pretty good). What's nice though is you can multiplay and add in bots for extra players if you want (with different AI levels, ships, team settings, etc). It's a good bit of fun.

The flying missions are also interspaced into the single player campaign a bit, to get you warmed up on the controls.

Edit: Oh yeah, there's something like 10 different maps to choose from as well.

For a handheld, I can see turn based making sense. Taking Advance Wars as an example. If you're on the move and get distracted/need to get off the bus etc... you can do it quite easily. If it's your turn, just drop your SP in your pocket. If it's the enemy turn, just drop it in your pocket.

When you get to where you can sit down again, you can survey the scene and get back to where you were without losing your place.

Either way, turn based or real time, I'm glad there's titles coming out that are going to take advantage of the DS's capabilities.

If you actually read that preview it's not really your typical RTS. It's mostly turn-based with real-time minigames. I want an actual RTS in the Starcraft/Age of Empires/Command and Conquer fashion.
