Nintendo has updated their official site with information on which controllers are supported for each retro system that has games available on the Virtual Console. You can find that information here (http://wii.nintendo.com/virtualconsole.jsp).

Does the classic controller work with GCN games?

My understanding, and someone please correct me if I'm wrong, is that only GC controllers work with GC games. It's basically like booting the Wii into "GC" mode.

I'm fairly certain that GC controllers work with all of the same games as the Classic... but I'm not positive. The ones I've seen on the market seem to be.

When you go to buy a game on the service, it shows pictures of all the controllers that game can use. For example, even though Sonic was on the Genesis (three buttons), it appears it can use the Wiimote (two buttons, basically speaking). I'm guess this is because all the buttons did the same thing so it doesn't matter that the B button or whatever isn't there. I looked at most of the games and it seems they all work with the Classic Controller as well as the GCN controller. All NES and I believe both Genesis games can use the Wiimote. I forget if any SNES games could. No N64 games use the Wiimote, just the GCN or the Classic.

Is the Classic Controller bundled with the Wii?

Not to my knowledge. I think it's an extra $20 or so.

My guess is that most Genesis games will work with the remote. Even if it needs 3 buttons, the game could use one only sparingly, and so it could be relegated to A. I'm also going to guess that 100% of Genesis and TG-16 games will work with the GC controller.
To answer others' questions, you can NOT use any sort of Wii accessories (including controllers) with GC games. The Wii thinks it's a GC, and only looks at GC controllers and mem cards. The classic controller doesn't come with the system, and is $19.99.

Thanks for the clarification mkelehan. Sucks I'll have to use a GC controller when I get around to getting one. Ah well.

I mean, you could always get a classic controller. They're shaped like SNES controllers, so that takes care of that. All we need is someone to make an N64 controller attachment, and how long will it be before a third party does so?

Geez. I am not really into Wii, but I thought it was going to be the easiest to use, etc...
It is starting to sound complicated -- I couldn't imagine the moms knowing all this stuff.

mk, I just meant for GC games. I'll end up getting a classic as well, no doubt. But for all the GC games I missed I'll have to get a GC controller.
Now I'm confused...
And, wasn't the whole thing supposed to be selling for 100$ in Nintendo's vision?

So I'm going to need the classic controller to play N64 games or can I use the Wii controller for that?
I got a feeling that the Wii is going to be another peripheral-must-have mess, Nintendo style.

That link isn't working for me. Because no one else has said anything to this point, I take it I'm the only one. Even wii.nintendo.com isn't working. I checked both Firefox2 and IE7.

It's not really that complicated. It just allows you to have choices. Each Controller has it's plusses and minuses, but most work for most if not all options.
The Gamecube controller has no real D-Pad, so while it's great for GC games, and can be used for N64-NES games, it's not the best for truly playing NES games on.
The Classic Controller is good for all systems but Gamecube because it's not layed out properly.
The Wii Remote is good for NES games up to SNES because then there are too few buttons. It's best for NES games because it feels like the NES controller.
So in review, You only need the GC controller and Wii controller, but the Classic controller is there to help you out if you need it.

the link works fine now, it doesn't sound complicated to me at all, especially if they have a little graphic showing which controller can be used.
It would be cool if there was a converter so you could plug in an actual genesis/snes/64 controller and play with that.
