In this article (http://spong.com/article/11171/Miyamoto+%96+Wii+Should+Have+Been+Sub-$100/?d=200611171138&cb=173), Nintendo Lord Miyamoto states that he wishes they had been able to sell the Wii for under $100. He also makes an interesting statement that they built the system with MILFs...err, I mean, moms in mind.
Our goal was to come up with a machine that moms would want - easy to use, quick to start up, not a huge energy drain, and quiet while it was running…
Well, women do lead in the casual gaming market, I believe.

Interesting...I'm definitely in the camp that thinks the Wii is a bit too expensive. $50 more than any previous Nintendo console wasn't what I had in mind when they touted how cheap it would be.

Miyamoto on the price of the Wii:
Miyamoto told Business Week, "Originally, I wanted a machine that would cost $100. My idea was to spend nothing on the console technology so all the money could be spent on improving the interface and software…If we hadn't used NAND flash memory and other pricey parts, we might have succeeded…[But] we had to compromise on graphics and give up on a powerful chip."
Interesting article. I like how he explains Nintendo's thinking behind making a technically inferior but inexpensive and gameplay oriented system.
I think it is highly likely that the Wii will drop in price in reaction to the Xbox 360, but both Microsoft and Nintendo are trying to bank this Xmas in response to the lower supply.

lol it's nothing ban worthy. I just found it amusing. :D Besides, with over 2500 posts and no donation yet? I think that is more shame than any banhammer could ever induce. ;)

Do you respond to all criticism with name-calling? That's a great strategy for avoiding improvement.

You're ugly. And you smell like batteries. :p
I respond to constructive criticism just fine but I'm also a smart ass. I may take what you say to heart but, if you haven't figured out by now, I'll reply with smartassery.

I remember when nes came out, I was like 4. My mom brought it home, I was so fucking psyched when i saw it. She sat down, and started playing it by herself. I was like "Can I play?" She was like "Sorry video games aren't for children."

Naw, I think if Nintendo was greedy they would have put the system at $299 or $350 and given us much better graphical capability. I think $250 is fine for what we are getting. And, if we know Nintendo at all, their price drops will be quick.

The system prices will drop quick. The first party games, however... :(

Yeah, selling their products for a profit just isn't good business. It sure as hell hasn't worked for them so far.

My dad bought my mom an NES the day I was born to keep her busy when she had to stay at home all day to take of me. It's only fitting that I keep buying Nintendo products. It's in my blood.

Low U.S. dollar. Wii is launching for $20 less than the Gamecube did in Canada.

WHo said inflation? Have you SEEN the value, or more specifically- the lack there of, that the dollar has. The dollar is worth 65 percent less what is did in '96. That is not buying power, that is exchange, world value.
I am just happy that people seem to have grasped that Wii Sports is in fact, NOT driving up the price of the Wii in America. That fast became my least favorite troll comment of the year.

It was just distasteful.
Instead of MILFs you should have used "fat bitches" instead to be more true to life.

Yea, as much as I like the system, I'm quite sure you're right. It's hard to imagine the system costs that much to make, but as far as what I'm willing to pay as a consumer, they got me. In the end, though, I think all the systems are overly expensive.

Given how none of the components are cutting edge technology(their implementation may be genius however), I feel 149.99 was a better starting off point. I mean Sony and MS were nice enough to subsidize their consoles for sake of the early adopters, why can't Nintendo?
I look forward to the analyst component breakdowns since I cannot find much confirmed specs.
Wii would have defeated the PS3 and 360 at $99.

I'd probably have bought one on release if it was < £150. £180 feels psychologically close to £200 ; a lot of money for a toy console.

If it was less than 100$ and they kept releasing the games they do and they only got better, they definitely would have as many kids who have a gameboy/ds having it at home. Out of all the next gen consoles and at the price of a ds, they would have totally regained a lot of the lost ground they gave to sony.
Oh well, too late ;)

Nintendo can't because they don't have movies/consumer electronics/an operating system to help them subsidize. You're comparing a company whose only product is games to companies whose gaming divisions do horribly financially. If Nintendo did exactly as Sony/MS did they'd be bankrupt right quick. And Sony/MS are not subsidizing for the sake of the early adopters (where'd you get that crazy idea?), they're doing it so you can afford their console. If you can't afford their console then how will they sell any games?

So more dollars are worth less real value....

It would have at $169.99 too.

If the Wii had a more powerful graphic chip along with some upgrades in the other areas within the plastic/metal case and cost a total of $299, I will still buy it.

Wrong. Just Nintendo being greedy.
Accusing a corporation of being greedy is about as about is informative as calling water wet.
The purpose of a corporation? Generate wealth, the more the better, end of story.
Now if I were going to complain about the price of something wii-related, it wouldn't be the wii itself.

It'd like to see the Wii cheaper than it is. It's kind of scary to realize it's only $50 cheaper than a 360. By Spring MS will likely match their price.

You missed some of my sarcasm/wishful thinking, they don't subsidize for us but it sure nice to think of them losing some money when you go through the mediocre launch titles, hardware and firmware issues. Its true that Nintendo is not as large as its competitors, but Sony's other divisions are not that healthy. Nintendo's DS sales have given them plenty of money in the bank they could have taken a hit initially to sell more software as well.
I feel they are far above their cost on the WII, will see if supply and demand bears this out. For now it seems to be paying off, if they sell like this through the new year then I will clearly be in the minority.
