View Full Version : Gears of Awesome

Holy Shit. I must say Gears of War lives up to the hype...so far.
I fired up the game last night and started the single player campaign. After busting Marcus out of jail and familiarizing myself with the controls it was onto the meat and potatoes of the game. Act 1 puts you outside in a ruined city that looks like it was part of the Roman Empire. Vast expansive landscapes littered with broken marble columns lay before you, and it's all absolutely gorgeous. It looks like a mix between Ico (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ico) and Saving Private Ryan.
As I blasted my way through each successive locust horde, I found my house pounding. The bass this game puts outs out is massive, and it'll give any home theater a good workout. The sounds of gunfire ring over your head convincingly.
The game itself plays like a cross between Doom and Ghost Recon. Slow methodical movements into cover combined with endless onslaughts of enemies yield some pretty intense battles. And these battles are best experienced with a buddy. As I made my way through Act 1 last night I had few people pop up on my friends list playing the game. At any time during single player you can invite a friend to join in and take the role of Dom. This worked flawlessly last night, and the Beserker boss battle Co-Op was some of the most fun I've had in gaming in a long time. In fact, there are many moments that you can tell are specifically designed for Co-Op. This is a welcome change, and one I hope more game designers include in their upcoming titles.
Multi-player is small scale 4v4, but they are quick and intense battles. There are a nice variety of maps, and each one has a different strategy that must be applied to it for your team to achieve victory.
So what's bad about Gears of War? Not much. The controls do take some getting used to, and there are times when the all powerful A button doesn't do what you expect it to, but these are few and far between. Also one gripe was during Co-Op missions only one person was able to pick up the COG-Tags, which unlock stuff. It's a minor annoyance but an annoyance none the less. (Update: Even though one person picks it up, both people get credit. )
Overall this game lives up to the hype so far. It's intense, gritty, and gorgeous. We'll have a full review up in a week or two after the initial wow factor wears off.

Anyone have any news on who has copies? Target says no until tomorrow, Wal-Mart said maybe later today, GameStop/EB are sold out around me with no ETA, and who knows about BestBuy.

Yeah, that whole run-and-gun thing doesn't work very well. Aside from the controls, which take their own learning curve, patience and a little bit of strategy help a ton.

I hate living in the midwest. You would think that being in Lincoln, Nebraska, a huge college town, capitol of a state, stores would get this game the day it comes out. Not the case. Hell, I had some one tell me it comes out on Nov. 22nd.
From what I'm hearing it sounds like its living up to the hype, which is good, but doesn't have clan/squad support, which sort of sucks. Either way, I want this game.

Because he has the banhammer. And he with the banhammer may post as he wishes. :)
Really, though, the reason this is front page is because Gears has seen so much hype it's good to hear a voice we all trust give its opinion.

Man, it's front page because it freaking owns. I am well into Act 3, and I have yet to be disappointed. It can be frustrating at times, but overall GoW is truly awesome. I'm lovin it!
i also read today that it works on Euro 360s, so i ordered a copy and sent it to my sister. maybe i'll get the awesomeness before it officially gets launched here.

BA, for the drop-in co-op, if the player leaves midway through a level, do you have to restart or does the comp take Dom back over?
As for your impressions, i have to agree completely with everything. i'm really enjoying the hell out of this game and sitting here at work is driving me nuts. best moment of the night: im in a 4v4 ranked match on some map (not sure the name, but it almost looks like a run down subway station...) and my team is on one side, engaged in a firefight with the other team. i flank them to the left, sneak up on one guy, stick a grenade on his head. he blows up, i chainsaw another guy and as i'm about to get chainsawed myself, my teammate snipes the dude in the head. we win. definetly the most fun i've had in a long while on Live.

The only thing that is annoying me is some of my squadmates AI in single player. Why when I am trying to flank does my squad take that as a signal to charge the enemy and get into hand to hand? I know my buddies are trying to move up to support me but hell....does he not see the 1000s of rounds per minute flying out there in the path btw him and his "new spot" he wants to be in? Otherwise this game is truly next gen and amazing. After getting all cozy with the controls it really can become artful slipping from cover to cover while squeezing off rounds.

So I can get a real life human being to help me get my single player achievements?!!??! So I can get a friend and rip through the game on hardcore and then again on insane? I thought the co-op was a seperate part ala Ghost Recon. If not that is awesome beyond belief. You also mentioned last night that a friend can jump in at any time during co-op correct? This is absolutely fantastic news.

That ... that sounds like a "story." You know, a story, from GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, Smash Bros., Halo ... one of those rare games where the simple act of playing it produces insanely fun and memorable action.
Rarely do games produce that kind of fun. I really want to try this game.

Utterly amazing. Best graphics i've seen yet on the 360 by far. First game that I've seen that made me say that it's truly next gen. The camera angles and speed run thing were well done. Very cinematic and it really puts you in the game.

Yeah, the COG tag thing sucks, but there is some consolodation. My buddy and me played some co-op last night and since it was "his game" we were playing (he was Marcus) I let him grab all the tags we found. However, the game kind of makes up for it in that there is a set of acheivements you can only get while playing through the game as Dom...so I got a couple of those.
Co-op in this game on hardcore is a fucking blast.

Yeah, only one person can get them. What I'm still not sure on is if person A has already gotten a particular set of tags, if they still show up for person B is person A is hosting the game. There is a lot of questions I have about the tags in co-op that are still unanswered. I'm still not sure if person B can even pick up tags in co-op. I let my friend pick up all of them because we were playing his game.
Oh yeah, if you are Dom in co-op, your progress is not saved. The person playing as Marcus's is, because you are both essentially playing that person's campaign mode.
Yeah, the tags are just scattered around the levels, sometimes in out of the way places, sometimes not so much.

You'll have to let us know what you think. You are pretty picky on what you think is worth your money on the xbox360 so I'd like to know if it makes the grade for you personally. Oh, I'm sure I'll love it. I'm really not that picky, just the 360 hasn't offered too many games worth the cost of entry or upgrade from the Xbox yet, but that can almost be said of any new console. Gears of War is one of those exclusives that I wouldn't think of missing. I've complained my fair share in the past because I was frustrated at not having enough to play on the machine that couldn't be found elsewhere at a cheaper price. I'm sure I'll complain again in the future, but at least Gears of War will satiate me for the time being.

Me and Intrude got through a total of 4 hours of the co-op/single player game yesterday. I must say I normaly don't play single player sections of games anymore but if they did co-op like this more often maybe I would. There is nothing like playing through a game with buddy. It brings me way back to the days of playing Contra co-op with my brother.

Meh. The single player is too short and the multiplayer isn't deep enough - I need CTF and KotH gameplay. It's like paying for a 2 hour movie and getting a 45 minute Brockheimer production. Flashy, but ultimately too short.

I finished the single player on Hardcore last night, it was quite frustrating for me at times but overall I thought it was very good. Even though I was frustrated I couldn't stop playing, I took a small break to come and post here but other than that it was non-stop Gears.
Visuals (love that rain) and sound were also a plus, the people next door were probably wondering what the hell was going on in here, I had the surround sound cranked. I'm looking forward to the multiplayer and trying Insane mode in co-op.

As long as it's great all the way through then there should be no complaints. Max Payne felt like it was like 6 hours and it was one of my favorite games. A joke would be like 3 hours and it wasn't an arcade game. Plus GoW has co-op and adversial multiplayer. If it was the only game you bought this year then it would be disappointing, but if you only buy one game a year then I don't know why you would spend the money on a next gen console already when they're going to have price drops.
I know you're a gimmick account, but I thought I would cut the real flaming off at the pass.

So the online is only four on four? For a total of eight?
I wonder if this was a technical limitation, or a deliberate decision for pacing. I could see how having too many people in a game that plays like this could ruin the strategy and devolve into hunting in packs.
Still, I'd love to see large, objective-based maps with this gameplay. It seems like you could have a tense, meaningful shootout/standoff if this game is paced the way I think it is.

Honestly I wouldn't want more than 4 on 4, maybe 5 aside. But that is about it. The multiplayer plays very carefully and tactically with a lot of communication within the squad. If you got too many people in the squad I think it would lose the tactical aspect and communication would become sloppy. 4 players are good to keep track of on your team.

Depends on your level of ability. It will be about 50 hours for me on hardcore.
Also, why is game length a badge of honor anyway? I've seen the most repetitive auto generated monsters and leveling treadmill RPG's and people say, "yeah, it's got 50 hours of gameplay". Woohoo. 50 hours of repetitive gameplay.
I don't think you'll find the corridors and rooms etc, looking like the same thing with different furniture... :)

I have not decided how much I like or dislike the game so far. The AI is ok at best, for every cool and great thing the AI does, there is one enemy (or your teammates) that will either stand there and get shot multiple times, or they will sit behind cover and you can wait with your gun aimed and pop them when they raise up. I just jumped on for a second and the very first battle I had an enemy run into the open. I opened fire on him and he stood there not trying to move or anything. Every stationary weapon I flank, the enemy never even tries to turn around and defend himself. You can run up and do anything you want to them. I don't know why everyone is praising the AI so much. Yes, some enemies will flank you, but most have the idiot code or something controlling them.
The story is ok at best. I have not completed the game and my opinion may change, but this far into Halo and I was already digging the story. In Gears, I am a guy who was broken out of prison to shoot stuff, and I was framed.
The only other complaint I have is in the control. Why make the controls the way they are? It isn't an improvement on controlling a shooter and it is a bit annoying at times. Yes, you can hit the 'A' button a little early and try to make getting behind cover a little smoother, but even then, your character doesn't always do what you intended. Getting over a barrier is a bit cumbersome too. Hit 'A' early, and then hit 'A' again. Couldn't they have simply mapped an 'X' command to jump over obstacles? I keep reading quotes where reviewers and posters say that there is a learning curve. It isn't a learning curve as much as it is making a clumsy control scheme work. Once you are behind cover, the control is a bit better. I do like the way the "swat" commands work when you are progressing wall to wall down a hallway. I do like the way reloading works too.
The game is gorgeous, no doubt about it. It is very clean and sharp looking. The action is very fast paced and great. I would not come close to calling it a bad game, but I don't think I am ready to give it GOTY.
One more thing about idiot AI, I have had multiple times when I rush an enemy who is hidden behind a wall and he just stays crouched for several seconds. I just ran up to one, planted a grenade on him and he still stood there for a second. He did finally stand up just before exploding. :)

The EBs in Manhattan claim that they are all getting 60+ copies later today, so shouldn't be a problem to pick up in NYC.
Spent about 2 hours playing multi this morning - haven't tried the single player yet. Think it looks just fantastic and is a blast to play. If you play a lot of BF2 or other shooters on PC, you will probably initially feel like you don't have much control or aim, but I found myself improving over time.
As others here said, it is a bit difficult to move about the levels at times when you unexpectedly attach to walls, etc. There are times you mean to head up a stairway, for example, but end up doing a swat move across the gap. A lot of it will probably get more familiar over time, though, as we learn to anticipate how the A button will act in any given circumstance.
I found the action very intense, and playing with the team, where you can revive each other, leads to some great firefights. Not a game to go lone wolf on, as it's very hard to take out two guys at once if they both see you in time.

Well I'm barely through Act 2 yet, and I can say without a doubt that this is the most action-packed, balls-to-the-wall game I have played in years! Hardcore difficulty isn't just a name, it must have taken me 4 hours just to get to the Bez. fight. I had a few buddies over last night to play, and MAN did they get co-op perfect in this game. I really thought someone was gonna have a heart-attack, it's just that tense of a game.
One of the best things is that the enemy will advance on you, but instead of just blind running at you, it will hop from cover to cover, until there right on top of you. Almost reminds me a little of Time Crises mixed with Doom as far as game mechanics go. Maybe a little repetitive, but in the same way banging hookers while snortin coke off em is repetitive, YOU DON'T CARE! I'll be back tonight at 5:01 pm.

, why is game length a badge of honor anyway? I've seen the most repetitive auto generated monsters and leveling treadmill RPG's and people say, "yeah, it's got 50 hours of gameplay". Woohoo. 50 hours of repetitive gameplay.
I don't think you'll find the corridors and rooms etc, looking like the same thing with different furniture... :)
I felt that way about Doom 3 and F.E.A.R, I think they both would have been way better if they had fewer levels and a few more scripted scenes. Doom 3 was way too long and I was getting bloody sick of all those closet monsters.

If it's around 9-10 hours and makes me feel like I want to play through it again at a higher difficulty, that's 20+ hours. I've played several 20+ hour games that I would never have any desire to go through again. Also, it's got Multiplayer which extends the life considerably.
A game that's too short is something like the newest Tomb Raider. I enjoyed it, but once you've gone through once you're done, no desire to do it again. There's no multiplayer to extend the life either.
Besides, I'm sure we'll all get to pay for additional content soon enough ;)

Ummm, this is great and all I pick it up today, buuuut....why is this front page?
a) because it's a newly released game for a next-gen platform.
b) because it's a great game (triple A title).
c) because it lived up to all the hype.
d) because people like to read reviews from real gamers.
e) because gamers like to talk about games in these forums.
f) because it's a game created by one of the best graphics engine developers.
and so on, and so on...
Now for the real question... why would you ask such a stupid question?

Co op is a blast as well as the multiplayer. I think there were several of us up until 1230am last night playing it. The collective screams of "OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" and the psychotic laughter when someone gets chainsawed was fantastic! :D I've never been a big fan of spectating after you die but GoW makes it very enjoyable. It's like watching a horror movie: you are yelling and screaming at the screen (especially when your team only has one guy left), knowing they can't hear you, but you yell anyway. Loads and loads of fun.
Only complaint: You cannot change game options while you and your friends are in the multiplayer lobby. No manual map changes, weapon, or game type changes. You have to completely exit back to the main menu (kicking everyone out of the lobby), change up and then reinvite. Annoying as hell.
The game forces without forcing (if that makes sense) teamwork. The lone gun usually doesn't survive long with a charge up the middle. You need to work together to be successful. Just about every position on the map has a flanking spot so it is hard to camp forever. Execution mode has to be one of the funnest as you have to kill your opponent with a melee attack. You put enough rounds into them, they go down and you have about 10 seconds to get to them to finish them off (curb stomp on the head, chainsaw or shotty usually do it). So much fun!
Oh, and the single player is fantastic. The Corpser battle was amazing.

I didn't watch all the credits but I think it was just game music and then some odd song. I think Dave Mustaine said in the interview with Major Nelson that by the time they renamed the song to Gears of War the game music was already final.

Here's some constructive criticism.
The controls are a bit hard...I would say that 33% of the time the "A" button doesnt do what I think or want it to do.
There have been quite a few times where I've died because instead of hugging the wall he dives out into the open...or I try to run and he does anything but that.
Your squad....USELESS. The manual says that if you hold the top left button and hit "Y", "B", or "A" you can control them. Has anyone gotten that to work?? Half the time theyre all dead within seconds and I'm too pinned down to help them. They suck to be honest...

Oh yay, I have a XBL Gold card sitting here waiting until tomorrow. The multiplayer is a breath of fresh air on the 360 scene. It's all about tactics, and cover. So far, in my matches, I have instigated the conversation with my team. Once I started talking, they all chimed in, and we were instantly calling out enemies, suggesting flanking moves, and coordinating attacks.

Uh are you stupid? Him saying he liked the game is a review. Given it is not an in depth annotated review that cites other games and carries on for 4 pages of blathering, but anytime someone give their opinion it is a review because that is what a review is. Now if Bap really hated the game but for "some reason" was singing its praise I would have a problem with that, but I like this site because I trust the mods and their opinions. False news is one thing but this isn't being proclaimed as "news." It is on the front page yes. This is the place that the mods put things that they deem worthy whatever that may be. If this were an actual review I'd have nothing but happy, nice things to say, but to often I see either, news that's not fucking news (read: this topic) or some stupid unresearched bullshit that just gets pulled an hour later.
Say it with me now ... "too."
You want news? Go to IGN. No wait, they're a bunch of tools. Try GameSpot. No, they're a bunch of cornfed corporate boys. Um, Kotaku?
This is the kind of stuff that makes Evil Avatar a good read. Stick around for a while, you'll grow to appreciate it. I for one put more stock in a minireview from Bap than I do the anonymous 9s and 10s this game is earning elsewhere. Don't like it? There's the door.

I just got to play the game finally. Sweeeeeet and fun game so far.
Here's my curiosity though. What genius at Activision wanted to release COD3 against this? I mean, it seems like a horrid idea to just put two big FPS games against each other.
Then again.. They really should have released this game last week. Viva Pinata is going to kick its ass come thursday. I mean cmon' Talking Magic Pinatas vs Gears of war? I think we know who'll win.

For the record, Dag has a point. This topic is basically forum fodder given front page postage. You may not agree with it, but stop jumping all over him already... I came to this site to get away from that type of garbage. And to everyone telling him to "build his own site", oh please. I hoped to never see such lines on a site such as this.
This is a community site, it's been said a billion times. A community site should accept all input, even if it's "WTH is this here?", not just "Because we say so." If it's "because we say so", then it doesn't need to be said. I hope this site never becomes another case of us-vs-them with the reds and their support group, and everyone else.

Just got done with a 3-4 hour marathon of Gears of War online. Within the first 5 minutes of me booting up the game, and 10 seconds into the prison scene, I was summoned into a game with some EvAV members. You know, I was browsing through the controls a tad just to look at the sensitivity. There is some customization available so I'm guessing this would be possible but am not sure.
Also on controls, I understand why they have had poo flung at them, but I also understand what they tried to do with it. They are not buggy to me at all and just take some getting used to. After 6 hours last night, my last 5 online matches played very well and I only accidentally did a dive roll once that costed me my life. Now that I have them down, I like the controls very much.
Ok... on to the game.
Single Player - Loving it, 50" Samsung is pure bliss with GoW. The acting is cheesy sometimes, but I would not say it's even close to the worst I've heard. The A.I., I haven't had a problem with yet (started on hardcore). They may not be brilliant but have yet to get me killed. Graphics and sound I'm sure you know the answer to this one. I've also seen complaints about enemy A.I. with them just sitting there and not moving, on this I have a theory.... they are pinned and scared to move because they know they will die. I had it happen to me online, I was flanked, the last one alive and there was nothing I could do but die. Just a guess, but the enemy has been very challenging and I have not run into this issue.
Split Screen Co-Op - Awesome, me and the wife were actually playing and she was really starting to dig it. She is not one for the bouncy\twitch FPS games and the slower tactical pace of this really appealed to her.
*note* You are always running with AI squadmates, having someone join for co-op just fills one of your squadmates with an actuall person. Therefore there is no need for difficulty scaling imo.
Live Drop-In Co-Op - Awesome, worked perfectly with no lag and playing co-op while still having your full screen is fantastic.
And the icing on the cake.... LIVE 4x4 matches!!! OMG!!!
I have not had this much fun since I first played BF1942. The matches are very intense, I was actually talking to my team (I rarely chat on live) and getting a kill is very satisfying. It must be experienced to really understand, but once you get the hang of it I have played nothing better in years and years. I think any more than 4x4 would lead to less tactical gameplay, it is perfect.
My online story, playing the level with the train that runs through the middle. We were down a man with 3 vs. 4 and getting schooled. I grabbed some good cover and waited on the other side of the tracks. I spot the enemy running up and taking cover. Looking around I see no mates, they must have taken the low road for a flank, oh well I'll just hold the line until they show. The train passes, two COG burst across the tracks and climb the platform. One stumbles right into my chainsaw as he rounds the corner I'm hiding behind. His buddy runs past without noticing me so I shoot him, shoot him right in the head with about 30 rounds, he dies... As the train passes the enemy across the way watch as I kill their friends. I return to cover just as the other two charge across, while filling one full of holes as he climbs onto the platform the train rolls through and creams his mate. I get the victory screen stating that I got the final kill, then the window comes up that shows scores and teams..... I am the only one on my team, my squad had all left the game and I didn't notice. So bascially I got to wipe out an entire team and felt like John Rambo doing it. Needless to say, the wasted me until the match was over after that, but damn if I will not be playing all night tonight!!!
GO GOW!!!!

I agree with you on the story, Cpt. I've had many genuine, out loud laughs at the dialog. I really get a sense of Marcus' frustration at what is going on and how he's stuck in the middle of it yet he keeps his sense of humor. There is a line where he responds to Dom asking, "Did you see that?" and Marcus says, "Yeah, I did. Kinda wish I hadn't." has me rolling with laughter at his sarcasm (I crack a smile every time I think about it) but saddened by the sad and desperate way he said it. John DiMaggio is an amazing voice actor.
I hadn't mentioned the seamless online co-op yet so thanks for doing so. It is excellent. I was playing single player yesterday, Jesse James 27 wanted to play, I dropped him an invite and fifteen seconds later my AI mate Dom started moving around as Jesse took over. No loading, no restarts, nothing. Just pick up and go. Brilliant!

Note on AI, because I've seen it in a few threads. Your squad AI on Hardcore is OK, but they do die, but that's OK. You're supposed to be the hero. If they were as good as you, then it would be like Big Trouble in Little China when Jack Burton (Kurt Russell) and his buddy Wang are about to face off with about ten of Lo Pan's evil henchmen. Jack Russell accidently flings his gun behind a crate while trying to get it off safety. By the time he retrieves it Wang has already dispatched all the henchmen... You need to be Wang or you can't "save the day" so to speak, that's why your friendly AI can't be too good. Helpful, but not better than you.
Regarding the enemy AI, on Hardcore they don't stand in the open. They use cover very effectively. They flank agressively. If they see you, you're flanking plan is busted. They don't sit around waiting behind cover. They press the issue. Sometimes they press the issue and die, but they also retreat and roll backwards or run to a cover when you get the upper hand. All in all, they are pretty crafty for enemy AI. I've seen much worse and personally haven't experienced any better. Also, they are very good shots. Don't stick your head out for long or you get it shot off.
I've heard on casual they are inclined to stand in the open etc., but how can you complain about weak AI on the "easy" setting.
As for the Insane level of difficulty... From what I've heard it's tougher than Legendary on Halo 2, so that's saying something. Wonder who on EvAv will be the first to complete the achievement for that? If it's tougher than Legendary, I have zero chance. :o

I'm enjoying this game immensely (I caved and bought it...hate spending that much money, but such is life!). It's a blast to play through the levels with my brother.
I also had the thought that I really enjoy the rumble feature, and I think PS3 players (with other games, as GoW will OBVIOUSLY never be on the PS3) will miss that in some games.
And the A-button for running...one of the BEST effects I've ever experienced in a game. Absolutely intense and immersive. Actually makes me tense up (and VERY few games are able to get me that immersed in them).
Unbelievable game. Terrifically fun. Love it!

Last year I fucking went beserk at the office when my coworkers somehow found dozens of pictures from me from birth to adulthood and plastered them all over my desk and walls for my 25th, and I proceeded to rip them all down as soon as I walked in for the morning.
Yeah, how dare they care enough about you to go through the trouble of trying to do something nice for your birthday. What assholes!
This year they didn't do anything out of fear of my anger.
Or, perhaps they realized you're a tool (as least as far as birthdays go), and decided to leave you to wallow in your misery.

If he wants his birthdays understated and under the radar, why the hell would you care? I'm the same way; I don't really care for the attention. I celebrate my kids birthdays, but mine is just another day. Get me a video game and I'm a happy camper with that, and that alone.
On topic: Great game. Not overrated; terrific gameplay, visuals, and online co-op rocks. A definite BUY recommendation.

Come on, you think a high postcount grants some kind of immunity from criticism?
To continue this thread jack: That's not my point at all. If you lurk for months or years, it's highly unlikely people will get to know you very well within the forum. High post counts mean the person has at least been "talking" with others, and builds a reputation (EVERYONE knows a bit about people like fitbabits, Zeal, GunnyMo, others who have been around a while AND posted their opinions...we may not like what we have to say all the time, but we get to know one another a bit, at least).
It's the reputation (built by actually interacting with others on the forum) which provides context for criticism, and allows someone who has been here for a loooooong time with lots of posts to get away with calling people out more, since they're obviously out there themselves, taking the risk of having the same done to themselves. AND they're a contributing part of the forum.
That's my opinion. Disagree if you will, but I think defending a nine-post-count lurker who pops in to attack someone and then pops back out is pretty silly. Let him/her contribute to the site a bit in words/threads and build a rep./connection with others first.
As an analogy, I'm much more inclined to take criticism from someone I actually talk with, interact with, and know a bit about than from some fool who just walks up to me and starts sticking his/her opinion in my face. Screw that type of person. This, btw, is why I'm not saying, "FUCK YOU" to you...because I know a bit about you and respect your opinion. I just disagree with it.
IF you were a nine-post-count lurker, however, I would tell you off. As it is, I respectfully disagree! :)

Are you prejudice against sociopaths? They are people too, you know.
People love me in the office, I'm a very likeable, mirthful guy. However, birthdays are not a great time for me. I had a bad commute that morning and I took it out on them as a result. I apologized, but I adamantly stated I didn't want anything special for my birthday this year (though I did that year, too). I don't like to be the center of attention, like I said before, but birthdays require it of you. And this is my work station, so people are going to see me all day with shit plastered to the walls and basically screaming, "IT'S HIS BIRTHDAY!! LOOK AT HIM! GIVE HIM ATTENTION!"
I didn't like it. I'm sure you and other people attacking me have had blow-ups before as well. I never lose my cool, as I'm a peaceful grunt. But on birthdays I'm for some reason predisposed to grumpiness.
Wish me a happy birthday, toss a present my way, but don't make a spectacle of it.

Have the good sense and decorum on a forum to realize that, with all of your NINE FREAKING POSTS, you haven't earned the right to rip on long-timers.
And perhaps YOU should realize, regardless of how many posts you have on an internet forum, that in real life the proper response to someone attempting to do something nice for you (even though they may annoy you in their attempt) would be to say "Thank you very much. I appreciate the gesture, but I don't like a big fuss being made about my birthday. If it's all the same to you, I'm going to take these pictures down" rather than flying into a blind rage and ripping their hard work to shreds.

*Hypocrisy Alert*
You're posting on a GAMING news site, criticizing someone who decided they wanted to play one of the best games of the years on their birthday. Because he didn't feel like going out with his office buddies, that makes him a weirdo?
I've passed up partying plenty of times to play games. Odds are my social life has been much richer than yours (Not a comment about you, but more about the somewhat wild life I led for a long period of time).
Who's the one that's childish here, that drinking suddenly becomes required on your birthday? Sounds like me when I was 15.

I forgot it was on his birthday. I suppose it depends on whether his friends are there a ton anyway... whether they made a long trip... whether he already had a couple drinks and spent an hour or two...
I don't have enough info and we probably don't need to go any further... :) My guess is, that he had fun, but just didn't want to spend his whole evening drinking at a bar. I've done both, but birthday's aren't a big deal to me and at Kel's age, my guess is his buddies may have forgotten he left another drink into their evening. I know, that's how it was for me in my 20's. :)

Wish me a happy birthday, toss a present my way, but don't make a spectacle of it.Okay, that does put it in perspective. I'm glad you returned to explain.

*Hypocrisy Alert*
You're posting on a GAMING news site, criticizing someone who decided they wanted to play one of the best games of the years on their birthday.
Oh pardon me sir, i dont eat, sleep, and drink gaming. Do I have to resign? Oh you think you might have a better social life than me now? Are you a retard? And just how are we going to determine that? I was merely pointing out that having human interaction has more value in this instance. Especially on the one day of the year that others recognize you. Besides all that you can still have a few beers and go looking for the game. All this aside, nothing like giving someone who secretly craves attention what he wants..

As a child, every birthday I was raped by our church's priest, Father Caleb. He would ask that I come to the parish and ravage my body severely. While doing so, he would drink alcohol and pour beer over my supple young body, laughing as he had his way with me.
This may be why I don't celebrate my birthdays with alcohol.

I said odds are. That's all. The vast majority of people I've met haven't really gone off the deep end the way I did. That's a good thing, and as I said, it wasn't a negative comment against you.
You must've missed the whole part where he doesn't like to be the center of attention on his birthday, and just had a rough day. Some people just don't like recognition.
How does human interaction "have more value", than something you've really been looking forward to. Because it's an arbitrary day when you where born? Personally, I almost never celebrate my birthday on a weekday. The weekends before and after are better for that.

My Favorite bithday was my 24th. We were doing deep-ocean research at the time.. Miles away from anywhere, with over 5,000 m below the keel on a bumpy and rainswept sargasso sea. I was convinced that no one remembered the birthday of a lowly, and then much derided, bosun's mate. But after completing my watch I discovered that while I was tracking squalls and fighting sleep and seasickness on radar watch, scrubbing many a filthy toilet, and getting thoroughly soaked checking on the equipment on deck, the cook had secretly prepared my favorite: "Chickenwings and chocolate squares" ..with purple frosting! Apparently one of the mates had looked up my name and birth date in the ship's log/duty roster. It was the best birthday ever! They even did the song, gave me a signed card and everything. Much later, even though we were a "dry" ship i found a bottle of beer in my bunk.

I thought I explained myself. I said I overreacted, I apologized to them, but I still made it clear that I didn't want them to do anything like that to me this year. I had a rough commute and even though I didn't yell at anyone, my grumpiness and obvious irritation was seen as I tore down all my pictures and decorations.
I apologized that same day, after I cooled down. I can't remember why I was like that that morning, but they know I'm not typically a pissant. It was just a greasy bubble in my otherwise civil dealings with human beings.
And the reason they are defending my social choices is because, well, they are my choices. A game I wanted to play came out that day so I ran home to buy it. People can't really condemn me for that, not on a gaming site.

You need to stop assuming things. I didn't ditch my friends and never said I did. I didn't have any plans preset. Some people from work (co-workers, NOT friends) were going out and I didn't go with them. I went home instead and swung by the game stores to pick up the game. EB's shipments were late and the other stores were sold out.
You seem to have some crazy vendetta going right now. Saying how bad a person I am for leaving my "friends", how much of a loser I am because I didn't choose to go drinking on a Wednesday evening, that I'm a social retard because I went home to play a videogame after work.

Everyone argues now, but you know you'd accept a game invite if it popped up on your screen. ;)

zAnd the reason they are defending my social choices is because, well, they are my choices. A game I wanted to play came out that day so I ran home to buy it. People can't really condemn me for that, not on a gaming site.
Nor would I. Sorry if I was unclear - I was only commenting on your post where you spoke about ripping down the pictures that your workmates had put up in honor of your birthday. Wanting to go home and play GoW is to be commended in my book :).

Dag-Sabot, will you shut up, fag warrior. You don't even know the guy you're intentionally trying to start an argument with.
OK, I cannot believe my Gears of War will not arrive from Amazon until the 20th. All I can say is NEVER get the $4 standard shipping, because the date is listed as shipped on the 10th and expected arrival on the 20th.
What the hell is that. Seriously.
Zeal, you could just buy a copy locally and return the 2nd one for store credit. You'll be playing this weekend if you do. Good luck.
You might like it. Luke Smith say's Halo is his Mario and he loves Gears. I'm sure you've read enough to know it has a different style than Halo. Hope you like it. :)

Likewise :).
Does the game look better when you play it in 720p or 1080i.
It is natively set to 720p, right.
