You left off POLICE SQUAD: THE COMPLETE SERIES, the DVD comes out on Tuesday.

I don't know how, but I had rationalized everything as just being heavily compacted until I saw Police Squad was coming out this week too. That's when I knew the conspiracy as it actually is. It's ghoulishly evil.

It's a good thing they delayed the GH2 for Xbox 360. I'd be dead in the water.

And there are 2 systems launching in under 2 weeks...

I know EvAv won't be the objective place to go for Gears opinions, but depending on reviews and testimonies, I might just break down and pick it up, along with a Live Subscription. Who knows.

My problem is I'll probably be playing it in 480p because 1080i on my 4:3 television has those black bars and the viewing area is quite small. I won't be able to enjoy it properly.

This is an evil, evil week.

Elite Beat Agents, Guitar Hero 2 and maybe Final Fantasy V Advance if I can't keep myself from succumbing to its siren song. Oh, and the GH2 wireless controller, assuming it actually arrives this week.

Plus I have to pick up Cars for my kid as a Christmas present (gotta get it when it's cheap!). He's in love with Cars... sigh.

I don't know. I personally would rather purchase games over consoles. A console is just more money that could be better spent on games.

I am getting a PS3, but I'm trading it on eBay hopefully. I'm not getting a Wii anytime soon, at least until a game other than Zelda becomes an attractant.

EDIT, GRAMMAR NAZI ALERT: OP, "There are just way too many..."

Gears for me this week, along with Yoshi's Island 2 for the girlfriend. She still plays Yoshi's Island religiously on the SNES. If COD3 is as good or better than COD2 I'll probably pick that up.

I just want to play Gears online. No power in the verse can stop me.

No kidding.

Heck, just the Final Fantasy situation is pissing me off. I wait, and wait, and wait some more and pick up Final Fantasy XII last week. Now FFV for the GBA comes out this week and FFIII for the DS is out soon as well with FFVI Advance due in the new year. Why can't they just space them out a bit? I would have loved to have some FF lovin' earlier in the year when I was scrambling about for something to play.

It is that whole holiday shopping thing. The general public only opens their wallet big and wide once a year.

The only companies that can get away with releasing hot games at oddball times of year are biggies like Blizzard and id who have huge fan bases.

Didn't some game make a killing not too long ago because it was the only good thing to come out in like 2 months? I want to say it was one of the Gamecube Resident Evil games.... I believe it came out in Febuary or something...

But anyway as I recall, it had more than a few devs realizing that people DO have money in months other than November and December.

This is mostly SE's release schedule being totally FUBAR'd. You have FFXII, FFV, FFIII, and the new Mana game all coming out within 2 weeks of eachother. I'm with you in that I would have loved for any of these to have come out in the last 6 months. As it stands now, FFIII and V will have to wait, with Mana probably being totally ignored.

Has anyone seen side by side comparisons of DVD vs. HD DVD? To me, it smells more like marketing crap. I can't imagine that movies will look THAT much better in HD DVD vs. regular DVD at least at this point. I'm fully aware of the old 1080p vs. 720p argument - but I'm looking for screens that show me the difference.

It seems like cool tech but it's an add-on (in gaming history, they've always failed) and within a few years discs (cd & dvd style media) will go the way of the carrier pigeon.

The advantage of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray won't be all that obvious unless you're watching something on a relatively large screen (42"+). IMO if you don't have a screen that large, the difference isn't going to be that big (or at least enough to warrant the purchase of a device to play the format).

It's the same every year though. You'd think with games like Beyond Good & Evil going relatively ignored when it was released a few years back that publishers would actually learn, but it doesn't look like it. Oh well, at least this means the games I miss out on buying in the fall are all reliably cut in price when I actually have time to get to them in the late winter/early spring.

I know it's horrible how these games tend to evaporate into thin air only 2 weeks after release. It's not like we can buy them after the new year. You guy's complain about the strangest things sometimes.

Very true. Too many great games get left out of the shuffle by being shadowed over big name releases. It just bugs me that's all. Especially for this year. Because nearly the entire spring/summer has been very dry for games, and poof! Fall hits and the good games flow! It gets worse every year.

I know it's horrible how these games tend to evaporate into thin air only 2 weeks after release. It's not like we can buy them after the new year. You guy's complain about the strangest things sometimes.

Not necessarily. Many games can become tough to find after the holidays. They may have been released in limited numbers or have been discontinued due to poor sales. This problem would be fixed if the games were more spread out. And like I said, it gets worse every year. Just look back at last spring/summer, it was a fucking gaming desert! My wallet demands justice! :D

Ah, but you see, that's where GAMEFLY comes in. Purchasing systems are necessary to be able to play games on that system. Purchasing games themselves is not. I plan on flipping through half a dozen Wii titles in a few weeks just to try the controls for each out via Gamefly. I'm upping my subscription to the four games at a time just for that very reason. But even at 4 games at once, it is still way cheaper per month than purchasing even one game by itself. I've got Gears of War at the top of my queue, for example. For the amount it would cost to buy it on launch day, I can pay for almost two full months of 4 games at a time. Consequently, I get to dick around with tons of different 360, Wii, DS, and PS3 software without the guilt of feeling I have made a significant investment and thus without feeling I must see the game through the end.

I am increasingly discovering that a lot of games are worth two or three hours of my time to introduce me to their interesting concepts, but I end up never finishing them because they don't have enough there to compell me to stick it out. This is all the more reason to use a service like this.

I guess I also have a shriveled peach pit for my fun center, or whatever, because nothing on this list interests me. Of course, the fact that I'm short on cash right now probably helps; when you know you can't afford anything, you can get a more objective view on some games.

I've been looking at getting such a service, too. I am afraid of the turn around times though. I'd only need 2 games at a time, but rarely do I need to rent titles, as I do a lot of research by reading reviews and whatnot. I haven't played a game I've hated for a long while as a result. If I'm a genre fan and a game doesn't get the greatest reviews, perhaps I'll rent it. I would have benefited greatly from renting Dead Rising and then picking it up used or cheap when it dropped in price, since I beat it so damn fast. But lately I've been forgoing new releases (well, not this fall with the PS2, but those are games worth full price) in favor of picking up games much cheaper down the road. I have just as much fun as everyone else did, but because I don't have an instant gratification complex, I can enjoy them later after everyone has moved onto the next thing.

I haven't rented in a very long time. If I purchase Gears of War, it will be the 3rd 60 dollar title I've bought, and I doubt I'll even buy it at that price--I'll find it cheaper somewhere by shopping around. I've been burned already by that pricepoint and I'm not keen on doing it again. I'm a bit turned off by Gamefly's price (about 22 bucks for 2 games out) mostly because I'm on the east coast and I've heard horrible things about shipping times. If another service offers a similar program but with faster shipping, I might think about it.

Gamefly does usually take me 5 days to return something, but since I'm doing 2 games at a time, that is ok with me. It still ends up saving me a lot of cash. However, if there were a service in videogames equivalent to Netflix, I would drop Gamefly in a second.

Check out www.gameznflix.com instead. They're only $16.99/month and you get 3 out at a time. I've been very happy with them. Plus, you can get movies as well if you're feeling the urge. So far I've had no problem getting any of the games I've wanted to play and their ship times have been pretty good (usually about 1 week for complete turnaround return/receive next). I pretty much constantly have one title in transition and two I'm playing and it's worked out well. Currently I'm playing FFXII courtesy of them :)

Well then, since you won't be buying all those crazy titles it seems like it might be a good idea to go outside and get a life ;)

You'll notice that most of those titles are portable, so I have every intention of leaving the house :P In all seriousness, I'd never get around to playing even 1/4 of my list as I just have way too much to do, not even counting the other games I have to finish playing.

Call of Duty 3

Guitar Hero II

Yoshi's Island 2

I'd be buying all those games if I wasn't buying a PS3.....but for now I'll just settle with Gears of War.

I'm with Kel here. It's silly to buy another console with so many games coming out for the one you already have. I'll of course end up owning one later in the generation, and I'll get the bonus of not having to deal with a first-gen Sony console (I've had issues every time...stupid spring) as well as cut prices off of earlier games.

Besides, I'm just not that interested in Resistance.

I haven't heard great things about Children of Mana. FFIII I'm leary about as well. I don't know why, but remakes scare me, even if we haven't played it before in the US.

I have heard good things about it from my brother. He is in Japan right now on a study abroad program so he got it a while ago so I don't know if there are any differences in the US version.

I'm not trying to bitch, but I really wish companies would start releasing their titles in a more spread out fashion. These massive game dumps during the late fall/early winter just plain blow.

I just wish they would start delivering them at consistent times just like DVDs are available every Tuesday.

Christ I have that case, thats a big fucking stack.

It has been a rough couple months, haven't been console gaming at all so they stack up. I've got 3 or 4 of the doublewide PC games in there too.

Some days I look at the stack and say, "Screw it, I don't even want to start one of those, I'm just going to play CS:Source or BF:2142 for a couple hours."

I've got this bad habit, I'll get oh, say 80% of the way into something like Valkyrie Profile 2 and then something absolutely incredible will come out, I'll switch to it for a few days---and then never finish the game I was working on. As far as VP2 goes, I have one fight left to do in the main storyline and that is it, but I still can't bring myself to put the damn thing in the ps2 and finish it.

It sucks in the brick&mortar stores though when everything comes out the same day. There's a line of 30 people with 10+ of them trading in random scratched ps1 game for $2 off.

I'm like, dude, I'll give you $10 just to get out of the damn line.

With the big marketing push for GoW and "emergence day", I really want to be clear as to which day it will actually be in stores. Tuesday (11/7) or Wednesday (11/8). There are nine pages of replies so, no, I didn't slog through all of them.

The countdown timer on Gamestop has it at 5 hours (and change). That means nothing though. I didn't receive any call from GS yesterday evening which probably means that it will be the 8th before they are in stores but anything is possible.

some super geeky store owners are going out of their way to get the game out to gamers today. most everyone else has to wait until Wednesday.

Even if they had two days a week to have things out, that would be fine with me. I'm getting sick of the release date being one day, the day it actually ships to the store being another and the day it might, if you're lucky, arrive being yet another date.

For FFXII and Guitar Hero 2, my EB got them in stock by at least the Sunday prior to their Tuesday release date. I can appreciate delays by the publishers or devs, but have it so that you actually will have the game in the store prior to the day it's for sale... It's so much nicer for me, the customer, to know that I can hit my EB first thing this morning to get my GH2 instead of having to wait and wonder if it might be in later in the day or tomorrow. I've had some games that have seen me going back 2-3 days in a row before it finally shows up.

Bah.

Now, that wireless controller for Guitar Hero had better be in today too... OR ELSE!

Spigot
11-07-2006, 08:36 AM
Ok. Wireless controller is now slated for a mid-January release according to the computers at the local EB (though I see the website has it for a Nov. 28 release... sigh).

EBA and FFV Advance weren't in either. Supposedly they're not going to be in until next Wednesday. WTF?

And lastly, I got my copy of Guitar Hero 2, drove home and open the bag to see that it wasn't actually Guitar Hero 2... it was Guitar Hero 1 (just the game). ARG! Now I have to drive all the way back down to EB and get the right copy of the game. And according to the manager it was the only copy of GH1 in that whole shipment. Sigh. I really need to doublecheck my games before I walk out of the store.

Sigh. Yes. I was pwned indeed.

What also sucked was that when I had paid off the game on the weekend, it turns out I'd paid off the GH1 cost instead of the $10 more for GH2. Sigh. So not only did I lose a good hour of possible ROCK TIME!, I also had to pay an extra $10. Sigh.

Stupid Tuesdays.

At least I'm not like the idiot who showed up bitching about how he thought it was stupid that he had to buy another guitar. He was convinced that the original Guitar Hero guitar wouldn't work on the sequel. 3rd party controllers, sure.... I hear that they don't work. But the original Red Octane controller should be no problem.

Of course, he wouldn't hear any of this. I told the manager that he needed to just start telling people this so they'd buy all of the guitar bundles.
