Not much news outside of this blurb, but it pretty much covers what needs to be covered:

Sony BMG Music Entertainment has announced that it will be releasing a cell-phone version of the game called Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved Mobile, sometime this fall. Developed with the help of Hardcore3D Wireless and Bizarre Creations, Retro Evolved Mobile will include all the enemies of the original game and configurable controls.

Story from Gamespot (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6161045.html).

There's just no way a cellphone can handle something that frantic. The controls simply aren't cut out for it, much less the system.

Exactly what I was thinking. I just can't imagine using a cell phone's number pad for something like that.

Maybe you use bluetooth and TWO cellphone keypads at once!

As... there are not enough buttons on a cellphone to make it work right.

Yea, because when people develop software they just say "OH MY GOD LETS RELEASE SOMETHING ON THIS MEDIUM!!!!" without thinking whatsoever whether it will work or not.

I have absolutely no interest on playing anything on my cellphone, period. I don't see the appeal, personally.

When it comes to Cell Phones... Yes. Yes they do. Do I really need to list the examples?
Dear Lord, the examples...

Umm, actually this occurs quite often in my experience. And the cellphone market is one of the worst culprits. Frankly the cell phone game market makes the Atari 2600 lineup look good by comparison.

But hell, nice to see your shilldom extends to other divisions of Sony. I guess that places you higher up in the org chart than I expected. Perhaps I should feel honored.

Actually there are a few that are decent. Orcs and Elves is mighty fun, as is Doom RPG and Ancient Empires.

A lot of developers are saying that developing games on the cellphone is the next big thing. We just have to see I guess.

I agree there are a few. AE1 is awesome, like fantasy Advance Wars. I've heard great things about Doom.

But there's an absolute metric shit ton of utterly terrible games slapped together by some no-name start up to capitalize on the latest craze.

They aren't talking about games for me and you. They are talking about games for people who would never invest in a piece of dedicated gaming hardware, or even a PC that could run recent games.

Lumines was a quick little bit of fun on my phone. Nowhere near as pretty as PSP or 360, but it still is fun.

I can see RPGs and Puzzle games working GREAT on cellphones, yet everyone is making arcade style action games.

Cellphones would be great for a episodic linear RPG.

I could say the same thing about an RTS on consoles.

Why is it a surprise this would come from Sony?

I know they're harder to get in the states, but you seem to be forgetting that Sony produces Sony Ericsson phones and software.

And they're the one Sony product that I absolutely swear by. To the extent that I went to the trouble of acquiring an imported European market phone because I hated the RAZR I got free with my service so much.

Gamespot has some screenshots (http://www.gamespot.com/mobile/action/geometrywarsretroevolvedmobile/index.html) up unsurprisingly it looks like Geometry Wars.

Battle for Middlearth 2? Ensemble must have some idea considering they are making a Halo RTS. My point was, they will find a way that should work decent.

Would you want to try playing one of those talking weasel games you PS2 fans are so fond of on a cellphone keypad?

BFME wasn't good on 360. Halo Wars has yet to be seen, but I'm not holding my breath. The only RTS games that have been any fun to control on a console have been entries like Pikmin; a radical change to not just the controls of standard RTS, but the very gameplay and presentation. If they do a similar thing with Geo Wars to make up for the lack of proper control, sure... but then it's just Geo Wars in name.

I think a better question is, Who cares? What effect does cell phones getting a port of Geometry Wars have on anything regardless if the controls suck or not?

Heh, "talking weasel" are you referring to the one that hangs around with the toaster or the one that hangs around with the wannabe space-elf?

I have some Crash Bandicoot game on my cell and it works perfectly.

Like on any gaming mediums, there are good and bad games.
Personally, I think any games that doesn't depend on the responsiveness of the controls work well on cell phones, such as a strategy game like this:
http://uk.gamespot.com/mobile/strategy/ancientempiresii/review.html?sid=6127192

Games like platform/action games, doesn't matter how well made, is always let down by the controls.

There's also the matter of which cellphone you have. It's almost like computers, there's a huge performance difference between different phones, specially on 2D graphics.
Basically, if you have a motorolla phone you're getting a bad performance. If you have a V3 or one of it's cousins (V300 included), then you're really screwed, that cellphone is slow as hell.
Nokia's varies, but even the ngage was slow when doing java games (the VAST MAJORITY of cellphone games are java).
Sony Ericsson's is great for java (except the older ones), they're very fast on framerate and loading.

But control responsiveness depends on how well the game was programmed, it can be bad even on a fast cellphone.

And geometry wars... I don't see myself even trying to play it without dual analog sticks :)

I thought the same thing about Doom...but it worked pretty well. I do not think it will be an exact release of the Live Arcade game. It is not the first of its type out there, I believe there is asteroids on cell phones.
