View Full Version : Leaks Wreck MicroSoft's Surprise

Some one at Microsoft needs to get a clue. They invited 200 people to come in and see the taping for the new XBox 360 which is to be revealed Thursday on MTV. They did ask the people to keep what they saw to themselves. Of course, we know that if you don't make them sign anything, and because it is supposed to be a secret, everyone else will know what that secret is within fifteen minutes of the attendees leaving the building.

Some of the attendees apparently couldn't resist and snapped photographs that have been widely circulated on the Web. (Note to Microsoft's publicity department: the next time you decide to give 200 strangers a sneak peek at a product you should probably insist participants check their cameras at the door.)

Ehh, so what. Most people don't sift through daily gaming news online.

Err, is this news, or a biased rant aimed towards MS over something so petty it's almost meaningless?

I mean, thanks for the news (I guess), but it could have been presented in a less snide manner.

does anyone really think that they don't do that on purpose?

the last few weeks have been one big FREE PR extravaganza for the x-box and microsoft.

I highly doubt Microsoft didn't forsee this -- I have a feeling they were hoping some stuff would get leaked... Microsoft has been the masters of 'leaking' stuff with xbox2, there is no way in hell they expected 200 people to somehow keep their traps shut.

I snuck a camera into the Xbox demonstration event here in New York. The secret is to, gasp, put it at the bottom of your bag. Another good trick is to have two cameras, and if they request you not have a camera to allow them to hold one. They rarely check for a second, and never in your pockets.

Nice :D

BTW, anyone thinks the 360 design is a lil retro? It could hurt them.

Not retro enough.

Oh, where is the late 70's Atari faux wood panelling of yesteryear?

bobbler

It does have that retro look to it, but honestly I don't think the look matters as much as people think -- also, I have a feeling (for all you that don't like the look of it) it will start growing on you the more you see it around (especially after seeing what it can do, same with ps3/revolution most likely).

The shots were of cameraphone quality, or at least a similar size lens, which means really small.

Besides, MS knew it was going to happen, now everyone wants to know what everything does now.

I agree MS definitely expected this. Its more free press and has an edge because its "leaked" instead of PR speak.

Heh. Yeah. I'm reminded of the Hitchhiker's book, when Slartibartfast tells Arthur of how the mice were running the show - performing experiments on humans by running the wrong way down a maze and gauging the human responses.

Arthur: 'Aha. I see the source of the misunderstanding now. You see, it was WE who were performing experiments on THEM.'

Slartibartfast: <shakes his head softly, smiling> 'Such subtlety. One has to admire it.'

I really can't see MS being that stupid that they'd get 200 people together, show them what they are hoping to become THE consumer electronic gadget for the next 4/5 years and then say "oh, yeah, guys... we'd REALLY appretiate it if you dind't tell any of your friends about your sneak preview to the most awesomest videogame console in the world"

This is the equivalent to those "The pictures [celebrety X] doesn't want you to see!" blurbs in The National Enquirer. Secrets and rumours spread faster then news.

Maybe, JUST maybe MS learned from Sony's mistake. A lot of people are sceptical about any news released about the PS3 these days because of how many people got burned over the Emotion Engine crap (although, I'll admit there's still a hell of a lot more people who will believe "The Cell can pilot a remote control plane into the SUN!" juggernaut).

This is kinda old news, and presented in a pretty harsh tone.

This isn't Fark. Keep it nice, ok?

EVIL AVATAR: DAILY GAMING NEWS>>>>>> WITH ATTITUDE

I find it hard to believe they would have not wanted, much less expected, this information to leak with such shoddy security measures in place. If only because the leaks have made the 360 the thing to see at E3 and because ourcolony has been leaking information already.

Like was said before, MS obviously expected this.

EVIL AVATAR: DAILY GAMING NEWS>>>>>> WITH ATTITUDE

I can usually find a healthy dose of attitude in the comments section of the news items, I would much rather see unbiased and informative news clips on the front page.

Wow, we're turning into a real media outlet now, not only bias but taking everything at face value.

What? Biases and opinions along with the news is exactly what this site is all about. Nobody ever claimed it was unbiased, so if that's what some of you want, you're in the wrong place. Like DirtyHarry pointed out, it's "Daily Gaming News...With Attitude". What'd you think that meant?

I really don't understand why people are upset with this news post. Anyway....this definitley didn't just hit the "gaming news sites" if you check yahoo's most emailed/viewed photos, the shot of the XBox 360 is in the top 3.

That facts could stand for themselves before we all jump on them. Also a basic understanding of the facts would be great.

Gah your in on the wrong website. Try going to bluesnews or some such. Besides depending on who you talk to a totally bias free news source simply does not exist. At least evilavatar is up front about it and in my opinion, revels in it.

You'd have to be a tard to believe that MS didn't intentionally let a lot of this stuff leak. There has been a massive amount of hype and speculation generated by all this stuff... hell just look at all the X360 posts on the front of THIS website.

Goronmon
05-11-2005, 07:55 AM
I wouldn't exactly say it ruined the surprise, mainly because there wasn't much left to surprise anyone with.

I mean, anyone who cared at all about the next XBox looked around on the net and found the estimated specs that were pretty darn close to what was just leaked.

So basically, before the leaks, the only people who were gonna be surprised by the unveiling were people who don't check gaming news sites, and since they prolly won't have heard about the most recent leaks either, nothing has really changed.

How exactly is this bad for MS? Everyone is now talking about the new console. Leaks are some times intentional.

If people want the flavor boiled out of their news, there's always GameTab. Which keeps tabs on the EvAv RSS feed, BTW.
