View Full Version : PS3's Resistance to use its own Buddy List

The fine folks over at Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net) are reporting that Resistance for the PS3 will not use the built in PS3 buddy list (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=69503). Instead you will need to maintain your own Resistance Buddy List.
Despite being one of the best-looking titles for the PlayStation 3 at launch (unless you're Ridge Racer 7 fetishist Tom, it's between this and MotorStorm really), Insomniac Games' Resistance: Fall of Man will not be integrated with the console's online functionality, specifically the built-in buddy list - instead, it will use its own buddy list, clan management system, and so on.
See Sony's Online is better than 360. Instead of 1 friend's list, you get 2!

I'm stunned.. really.. who would have thought.
In all seriousness, it's not real online if it doesn't have in-game notifications and messaging. Sorry, once you've had it you can't go back.

This isn't exactly news, it's been known for quite a while.

I think we have all thought that it was true, but this is confirmation. They could have used some kind of API to send buddy lists and messages through to whatever service a game uses, but it seems sony was even too lazy for a simple solution like that...
couldn't they have done something simple like an RSS feed for buddy lists and messages?

This is very dissapointing.
Sony get of your lazy ass and do a decent online service!!!

Gee, all those people are right: a free online gaming service that someone just pulled out of their arse is sooo much better than a unified service with standard features that works across all games for a mere $50 a year.

Welcome to the PS2 Network.
Wait...did I say PS2? I meant to say PS3.
I know not everyone likes to play online, but I do, as many others do around here. Not having a unified friends list like Live is definitely a hit against the PS3 for me.

What do all of you people do when you play on your computers? This is a non-issue. I prefer not to mix up my individual game buddies.

We wish that we were playing on a unified online service instead of having to track down individual friends.
The thing is, Sony promised that PS3 online would be like Xbox Live, but free.
It isn't.

I guess Sony is right, this isn't a video game console...it's a computer.

Didn't they also state that it would be a "LIVE Killer" as well.......??
Looks like its shaping up nicely......

That sure is a world of difference. On a computer you have IM, Emails, Voice chatting third party services that will help you and your friends hook up. With XBOX you have all that crap but you put it on one list with on buddy name.
Now you'll have some instance when GarbageMann83 is'nt your buddy across the way. It was stolen from him and now he's Garbage_Mann83 on one game, something else on another and so on. Then you'll end up with about 20 different screen names for the same dude and whatever. Xbox Live, I loves you.

Oh my god what a suprise Sony lied
Goes back to yummy Xbox live :)
Well considering it's a supposedly "free" service, shouldn't you be glad that you've got a buddy list at all?
I mean, you are paying for what you get.

Xbox Live Silver accounts have unified sign-on, buddy lists, cross-game communication and messaging too. Oh, and that's free.
Sony can't even COPY features that Microsoft already has had in place for over a year. It isn't like they have to come up with anything NEW, they just need to buy a 360 and start copying.

...However, disappointingly, it won’t hook into the main buddy list of the PlayStation 3 - instead you’ll need to build your own buddy list which is specific to the game. Price wouldn’t be drawn on whether this will be fixed by a future update to the game, but he made a point of saying that the buddy lists are separate “currently”, and said that “it is definitely possible to update the game via online” - so perhaps there’s hope on that front.
A nearly eight month launch delay, and Sony still couldn't rectify this?? I thought the entire point of their constant s**t talking about Xbox Live was to surpass Microsoft's service.
I wonder how many other PS3 games will need [firmware=security hack] updates in this manner?

Well, since this is "Sony" we're talking about here, until most of us get a PS3 and a chance to test out their PNP services, I wouldn't look at it as a good thing just yet.

Honestly the thing that disappoints me the most about this is that now Microsoft has no reason to make Live free :( Why would they when it's clearly better?

You know with the rise of microtransactions. To a alarming and sometime idiotic rate. I think the Live service would survive just fine if it was a little cheaper. PS3 system is kinda what it is. It's shaping up to be a dusted off PS2 network system. The same bashing will apply because they said it was going to be slicker. Intergrated buddy systems just seemed smart. But unlike MS I doubt they have people actually working on it. You pay for live because MS pays a department of people to work on updates, BC, more content, and bunch of other crap. I haven't been on Live yet but I thought the way the whole system was setup was maintence and betterment. PS3 is free because they are throwing up what they got. Wii seems like Nintendo put some work in on the online system they plan to throw up. A system that self sustaining. That extra money Wii is costing is profit. Probably to cover the cost of making a truly slicker system.
I could be wrong about all this. But Wii's free seems better than PS3's.
