View Full Version : World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade: Starting With A New Race
Pro-G (www.pro-g.co.uk) has posted a preview of World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade (http://www.pro-g.co.uk/pc/wow_the_burning_crusade/preview-289.html), focusing on starting the game afresh with one of the new races.
World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade (http://www.pro-g.co.uk/pc/wow_the_burning_crusade/preview-289.html) presents an interesting conundrum for World of Warcraft players: drop your existing high level character for the allure of starting one of two new races, or keep on with your uber-equipped killing machine and brave the shattered realm of Outland.
So far, most beta players have opted for the high level rewards of Outland over starting a new character. But this isn't to the detriment of TBC's two new races, the manga-esque Blood Elves and the big blue aliens the Draenei - both have aspects that have drawn concern from the typically vocal WoW fan base, but overall are shaping up nicely.

OMG no one has ever had an MMO with new races before. People re-roll all the time. Blood Elf Pallies and Dranei Shaman will be in great abundance on the first week of release.

They are really just new skins I thought. Blood elf is a Paladin, Draenei are Shamen. Because people bitched about the two factions having exclusive characters.

I'm rolling a Draenei Warrior come launch day, I want a spaceship.

The hype around WoW is noticeably cooling off Blizzard sees it the fans see it, Games like EQ II EvE and CoH are actually seeing an increase in populations due to first time MMORPG players getting bored with WoW and moving on to other things, Now Blizzard is doing the smart thing and structuring themselves to compete in the Market where they may no longer be Top banana (At least in the U.S.) Don't get me wrong I'm still loving WoW and know that TBC will be a smash hit, but I like many of my friends find ourselves playing EQ 2, EvE, or GW Nightfall more, and we are all in the TBC beta .
But that isn't all due to burn out on WoW, SOE has done an amazing job of making EQ II more fun to play, and from playing in the Echoes of Faydwre beta I can say that a lot of the EQ magic has been poured into the new expansion, and there is EvE CoH ..and really it is going to come down to where your buds are more than what is more fun to play because gamers are seeing a lot of quality content being produced.
For me sadly it's a tough choice TBC, EQ II or EvE. Being a new Dad again in Dec I will probably only have time to devote to one, and then very little time at that. Right now EvE and EQ 2 are tied for the lead.

I know I love EvE and I belong to the most awesome guild would that my WoW guild was half as cool. As I said tough choice.

Sadly, WoW is going stronger then ever. The Burning Crusade is going to make the amount of players explode even more.

This expansion introduces another "conundrum": drop more money on a life-sucking product or finally give it up and go taste some fresh air.

Fresh...air? Is that when you open the cellar window to let the smell of Cheeze-Its and Dr. Pepper escape the basement?

*hides his Ancient Cornerstone Grimoire and Netherwind Crown he just got* I wish they'd introduce more interesting things to do in the game. I mean, new dungeons, okay, but... How about some fun quests, adding voices to major opponents, skills like learning language or archeology or something?
Also, getting tired of every gaming site/magazine out there posting the same "We played a Blood Elf/Drenai through level 15, here's what the starting zone is like!" though some of them are posting different info. Blargle.

Major opponents already have voices, at least in 5 man instances.
As for the rest, well unless you're in beta you really can't know. Most people are, as you say, rolling BEs/Draenei for their starter areas and rushing through Outland to get to the new instances for the loot.
That said Draenei do have The Kessel Run, where you get an elephant to ride for a little bit...
They really need to add languages though, even if they aren't cross faction, I'd pay for my Tauren to learn Gutterspeak.

I have to say the new areas for both the Drenei and the Blood Elves are significantly more interesting than the starting areas for other races (if it wasn't obvious I'm in the beta :P), particularly the Blood Elves.
What I've found amusing is the AH on the beta servers. Do not expect to make money with Jewel Crafting. Seriously... because it is the beta EVERONE has selected it (myself included) meaning that ore and JC products sell for squat. :P

I doubt many people are going to drop their max level professions to start from scratch with Jewelcrafting/Mining. Some will, but Beta characters will be wiped before release, meaning it won't matter that you dropped your high level enchanting and all the rare recipies you learned to try out a new profession.
I think you'll find just the opposite--mats will be rare, as only a handful of players will be willing to give up professions that took hours to level.

Nah, if you have enough gold, professions take very little time to level up. There will be 300 Jewelers within ten minutes of TBC going live. The people who have rare recipes are the ones that won't drop their profession. The market will be flooded in no time.
