Shacknews has posted a Press Release (http://www.shacknews.com/docs/press/051005_aa_ue3.x) from the U.S. Army announcing that they are licensing the Unreal Engine 3 for upcoming versions of the popular America's Army (http://www.americasarmy.com/) game.
The U.S. Army today announced that it is
expanding its technology agreement with Epic Games. Since 2000, Epic's Unreal Engine 2 has served as the foundation for America's Army, the Official U.S. Army Game. To take advantage of leap-ahead capabilities afforded by Epic Games' newest engine, the Army will begin developing its next generation versions of America's Army on the Unreal Engine 3 in the coming months.
"The Unreal Engine has enabled us to develop one of the most popular games in the world. At the same time, the Unreal Engine has provided us the power and flexibility to develop revolutionary training and education applications for use across the government," said Colonel Casey Wardynski, project director and originator of the "America's Army" concept. "The gameplay, environments and immersive action generated using Unreal Engine 3 will allow us to create ever more realistic scenarios and environments through which young adults can learn about Soldiering and through which Soldiers can master skills ranging from lifesaving to countering IEDs in the Global War on Terrorism."

Then it's not really free, is it? Maybe to folks outside of the US. I never played AA, but good news regardless just because it's amusing and interesting, and seems like it's not awful.

I saw this one coming. Now what would totally shock the shit out of me is if assholes in the game can be arrested for 'homeland security' reasons.

I read today that the Army and Marines are not making their recruitment quotas, which is having a severe impact on maintaining an all volunteer military. I wonder what the possibility is that there will be subliminal messages interleaved in the video when you play the game?
I know, I know, I'm just being paranoid. But the question you should be asking is am I paranoid enough?

Sweet. If there's a way to play the U3 engine for free, I'm all for it.

More tax dollars down the tube. We have soldiers that don't have the basic things they need like proper bullet proof armor, and supplies, and yet the military has money to blow on games?
I'll be glad when these "conservatives" are out of office.

Love this game, this is great news. Sure it's not truly free, but at least it's a program my taxes are paying for that I actually like.
I'll be glad when those conservatives are gone too. The previous administration was so much better at making sure our military was properly funded and supplied.... oh wait.

Body armor is pretty useless and only slows you down. It doesn't protect you from assault rifles which most of the enemy soldiers are using.

Actually, the latest research I read showed that while a large number of soldiers were being wounded in this latest conflict, they were living where otherwise they would have died. The sad part is that they're living with fairly serious leg and arm injuries, which body armor doesn't typically cover.
You can read more about it here:
http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/medicalnews.php?newsid=13665
"At the same time, these findings reveal that the facial and neck regions as well as the extremities remain exposed. Wounds to unprotected areas of the body account for the majority of injuries. Fortunately, extremity injuries are generally not fatal. On the other hand, wounds to unprotected regions of the head and neck account for the majority of combat deaths."

How much combat have you seen? As someone only experienced with close quarters battle, I rely on that body armor to keep me alive.
(I really wish I had a picture of me in my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle outfit from work... Dude, that is some funky body armor.)

In a time of war, the Army should have higher priorities, for their tax funded dollar, than video games.

I'll take a miniscule amount of tax dollars (less than .01 cent per person) going into Epic's pocket rather than a war I don't believe needed to be started. Tee hee.

I was against the war in Iraq, too, but that does not mean I think we shouldn't fully fund our troops.
They didn't decide to go there, they just follow orders.
I'm sorry, I'm just a little peeved with the entire state of American politics. When the "runaway bride" becomes bigger news than a current WAR, it gets under my skin a little bit. I love games, but I feel like the Army is wasting money with this crap.
We don't have money to properly fund medicaid or VA hospitals, but somehow we have money to make a free game in an attempt to entice people to sign up for the Army? It makes me sick.

Well, honestly, how much are they spending to make this game?
When it originally came out, they said they spent 7million dollars to make the game. Sure, we have funding problems with troops not equipped, etc. But come on, think about 7million dollars in the US budget for military.
7 million dollars is roughly the equivalent of a buck to you. If you loose a buck, you're slightly annoyed, but oh well. It really wasn't that much.
No, the true problem here is really politicians in general. Not repubs or dems, but politicians. They're too damned greedy and listening to big business instead of doing what is right. Our system needs a major overhaul -- from our laws to our enforcing the law and oh yeah, the people who decide if a law is just.
Everyone complains about one person -- the president. People need to wake up and realize that while the president does have a lot of power, he's not the system in general. Senators, republicans and judges are all voted in by the US citizens. The sad thing is that most don't care that the politicians are ruining their lives, and believe the BS that the politicians feed them.
/rant.
So why did anyone bring in politics to the thread anyways?
