I was just looking for the Rainbow Six Vegas demo on the Xbox Live Marketplace a moment ago(it's less than 500 megs!) and noticed a new entry for Perfect Dark Zero. Apparently they've just released their second map pack containing remakes of 2 maps, Facility and Ruin from their previous FPS offerings. The free download clocks in at 108mb.
It's certainly a nice treat for the 5 of you who are still playing PDZ.

PDZ was a solid FPS – unfortunately most people wanted it (the first 360 FPS and the sequel to a fan favourite) to be a lot better then it was. The single player is solid, but fairly uninspired (undoubtedly the reason for most of the ill-will) - but the co-op was fun and the multiplayer is excellent.
The multiplayer has a wide range of game-types, from capture the flag, to deathmatch, to ‘counter-strike’ style matches.
The only real problem is that it seems to suffer from the “kiddie” problem that Halo has. It is overrun with ass-hat 12-year olds. But if you can stand Halo2, this shouldn’t be a problem.
Facility is based off the Golden Eye map.
Ruin is based off a Perfect Dark map.

PDZ was one of the worst FPS's i've played. I couldn't get rid of it fast enough.
It and Kameo prove Rare has lost it (all the good devs jumped ship a while ago).

How about making the old map pack free a la The Outfit? The maps are included free with the platnum edition, and Rare isn't going to get many more sales from people who already owned the game.

So I just downloaded the two maps and ran through them. Ruin is better known as Temple from Goldeneye. Playing perfect dark zero on either of these levels is exactly like playing Goldeneye on these levels. There's some crazy nostalgia going on when you know instantly where you are on a map the very first time you get plunked down on it.
Unfortuantely, it's exactly like playing Goldeneye. You circle strafe around the other guy and miss a lot, and everyone has way too many hit points. The level design is bad, whoever thought that facility was a good level was crazy.
If anyone ever tries to tell you that Goldeneye is the greatest consle FPS ever, sit him down with PDZ on one of these levels. You play a shinier version of the same broken game (except you actually get to spawn with a weapon and the spawn points aren't deterministic).

Sometimes I believe I'm one of the only people left in the world that did not think that Goldeneye was all that impressive. It was okay, but it never really got me all that jazzed.

I liked PDZ and I guess that puts me in the minority. There were so many cool weapons with secondary and sometimes tertiary fire modes that I was willing to overlook the poor models and weak story. The multiplayer mode in that game is still very fun.

Too bad Microsoft will never let it be released on the Wii VC. It's a shame so many people missed out on one of the greatest FPS multi players of all time.

I didn't like the single player, but I do enjoy the odd multi player game. I downloaded the previous map pack and actually really enjoyed the new levels. They seemed a lot more team focused and less empty/random.
Extra free levels are always welcome.

From what I understand, it's actually Activision's possession of the Bond license that is holding it up more than MS/Rare.

Goldeneye is the best FPS console game ever. Just as Doom is the best FPS game period. Both are what you would consider the "fathers" of FPS gaming. Sure, FPS games came before them, even popular ones, but when they came out, in their respective industries, they were the "it" games, and thus changed the development of such.
Even today, FPS games on the PC owe a great deal of their identity to DOOM, just as console FPS games do to Goldeneye. To try to compare Goldeneye to modern-day games is just silly. It'd be like comparing All Quiet on the Western Front to Saving Private Ryan. The two don't compare because they were made in different times. Saving Private Ryan had a lot more money to spend and about a generation's worth of technological development over All Quiet; does that take away from the latter? Should it?

I think Coridian meant the original Perfect Dark and I couldn't agree more. That game was WAY ahead of its time, I betcha if it were re-released it take the place of Best FPS of EVER. Seriously, get a N64, a S-video cable and hook it up to your TV and Surround sound system and PLAY THE ORIGINAL.

Gotcha. :)
I still clearly remember one of the coolest gaming memories I have from that era...
We were playing Hacker Central on Felicity, four of us against 8 hard simulants, and the score was tied one point below the limit. We realized the laptop was in the little security room just outside the locker area (you know the one!), and my buddy Drew crouched down to hack it. I've got my Farsight, so I'm picking off everyone I can as they all stream out of the bathroom in sync. We're all trying to keep it together, because the time limit's running out too. All of a sudden, I hear the door open and a guy start revving up the Reaper, the huge chaingun, and I switch from the Farsight to see the guy bearing down to kill poor Drew. I jump right in front of Drew and take about sixty bullets, and the uplink finishes right before my body hits the ground. We go nuts.
Hehe, I loved that game!

I always had matches with all grenades. N-bombs and proximity mines. Theres nothing more awesome than to hear explosions and see everything go dark all of the sudden. Man... Good times...

Uh...I believe it is. I checked this morning when I grabbed Map Pack Two. Though I was pretty tired at the time, so I may have misread it.

Hunh, the N64 did S-Video? I'll have to go hunt one of those cables down....

A Gamecube s-video cable should work, actually. They are the same socket and everything.

When I grabbed Map Pack Two, One still cost 500 points. That may have changed, I'll post if it did.

To the person who mentioned circle-strafing: If that is what you are doing, then you aren't playing right. In fact, 90% of the time you should be firing from cover, unless you laying siege to a group of your opponents.

I'm right there in the minority with you. It was definitely more difficult to aim than Halo, but it didn't bother me. I logged a ton of hours in multiplayer. I played almost every night for a couple of months.
Ran through single player on an easy setting, to see if I was going to miss anything story wise. I wouldn't have missed much, if I hadn't played single player... ;) I also, loved the tiertiary features on the weapons. Lot's to choose from...
All in all, I thoroughly loved that game. Pretty big maps, with 32 player online, almost no lag, vehicles, jet packs, better graphics than last gen.
I think expectations were too high.
