On Monday I was invited by Ubisoft to take part in a Rainbow Six multiplayer event. The publisher wanted to show off the game's myriad multiplayer and co-op options in the Xbox 360 version. Ubisoft was also keen to show how players can put their own faces in the game via the Xbox Live Vision camera.

Take one front face snapshot and one from the side and within minutes your very own boat-race will be present in the game. It's striking and more than a little spooky. There's something rather creepy about seeing yourself lying in a pool of your own blood. It's a fantastic feature though, both technically and gameplay wise. This isn't just a case of mapping a texture over a predefined head, the game actually builds an Unreal Engine 3 3D mesh based on the two photos. And once in the game you can add further features to your face such as camo paint and scars.
You can see my own ugly mug in the game and read the whole hands on preview (http://xbox.boomtown.net/en_uk/articles/art.view.php?id=12741) over at Boomtown (http://www.boomtown.net/en_uk/).

Very nice preview. I CANNOT wait for this game. This game went from wait 'till reviews to overnight shipping on day 1 after playing the demo.

I've seen it before on both The 1UP Show and On The Spot. It looks like a cool little feature.

This was one of those cases where I went in being sceptical and came out a believer. It really is a great game. The four player co-op is especially good.

Question: Can you play splitscreen co-op? Or is it just over system link/Live? (I don't have enough friends with 360s.) ( I mean, I have a LOT of friends, ok? Some are even girls, so don't be getting the wrong idea or anything, because I am one popular motherf*cker. OKAY!? Don't judge me.)

Apparently splitscreen co-op is included. We didn't try that at the event, but we were told that all the modes were available via Live, LAN and split. But like I said, having not tried splitscreen I don't know how well it works or how many players it supports - only that it's in there.

R6V uses the unreal 3 engine so perhaps the network code will be better...no?

2 players is enough for me. Thanks!

Edit: When I am miraculously unable to locate a Wii, this game will be helping me though those dark, sad hours.

Does anyone else get annoyed by the constant drops in FPS on the demo?

If you have an american 360, it wasn't available then. But it's supposed to be now. Try the "Bringing It Home" or "Newly Released Demos" section. That's where I found it. :)

I noticed it near the end of demo, but never to the point where it put me off.

I wouldn't say it put me off... but every time the two squadmates are on screen - there's a noticeable drop in FPS. And it's really annoying to me when you're breaching a room - that's when I want the action to be the smoothest.

During my time with the demo, as soon as I rescue the hostage and all hell breaks loose afterwards, that's when I notice the slowdown. At any other part of the demo, it's been smooth sailing for me.
