View Full Version : Another look at Killer 7 gameplay
IGN (www.ign.com) has a preview (http://cube.ign.com/articles/611/611334p1.html) of Killer 7 that gives another look at the gameplay of this mysterious title. If you were confused by Gamespot's preview, this one offers a clearer glimpse.
Killer 7 is probably not going to be for everyone. Its experimental control configuration may turn some players off. But for gamers interested in a uniquely surreal storyline with a lot of intriguing plot twists, some clever character-based mechanics and a very stylized look, the adventure will certainly please. In the end, we're not sure why the title's exploration elements are on quasi-rails, but we'd be liars if we stated that we aren't having a lot of fun with it anyway.
I'm not a fan of the "story first, gameplay second" approach to game making. I guess it all comes down to the quality of the story and by extension the translators.

Ok I don't even know how to respond to this post. I'm not saying that I want bad stories in games. I just don't want the gameplay to be an afterthought. When you map out your entire story and then try to fit the gameplay around it you end up with games like Enter the Matrix.
But you're right I would like there to be less story in Metal Gear games. I haven't played Metal Gear Solid 3 so maybe my complaint's already been taken to heart but Metal Gear Solid 2 had more watching than playing. Maybe this is ok in an adventure game, but Metal Gear Solid is an action game as much as it is anything else and it's sad that people don't get to experience the action because they don't feel like wading through hours of expository dialogue.
Games being the interactive medium that they are I think designers should try to integrate the story into the gameplay (like in Half-Life 2) rather than the other way around.

I have been very interested in this title for quite some time now, but I agree that gameplay comes before story. This is coming from a guy who thinks that Deus Ex is one of the finest moments of videogaming history. I love a good in depth story, in fact I prefer for my games to have deep, engaging stories. However these are videogames we are talking about and as such are based around how we interact with the game world, in other words; the gameplay.

Pokemon = Crappy story AND crappy gameplay.
Metal Gear Solid = Lots of high quality story, lots of high quality gameplay.
The issue is, of course, balance. Pokemon games have their place, I guess, but there is nothing ingenuous about either the gameplay mechanics (pretty much just an update of the original Dragon Warrior) or the meager story. MGS packs both on in spades, but I think the only reason I get irritated with the copious amounts of story is because the gameplay is so open-ended and fun that I felt like there was so much more they could have done with it. The MGS series is still a very brilliant and revered one, in my view.

What makes the 'story' in Pokémon games so crappy? The Pokémon games are meant for young children and/or people who are older, yet enjoy a lighthearted narrative about adventuring into the unknown. And in my very honest opinion they succeed splendidly in offering the player just that, since not everything should be serious or complex. And no, I cannot see how the gameplay is crappy, it's one of the finest RPGs there is, especially since the random encounters have been fitted so well into the game world, they doesn't feel in the least bit obtrusive. FFX, for example, was crap compared to that.
Having said all that I still think that MGS2 was one of the best games this generation. The plotline, nay, the whole structure of the game was brilliant and executed unbelievably well. And I am one of the few who liked the more story-less action part of it :) Even though gameplay-wise the game was fun too.
As for Killer7, I'll just wait and see, but I have a feeling it'll be good. And the way the game is played seems fun or at least different from the norm. I like that, being a lover of Nintendo and gimmicks.
Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=58981) also has a fairly lengthy write-up on the game.
