From Valve:

The Ship, a massively mysterious thriller (MMT) from Outerlight Ltd, is scheduled for a free four-day tour of the full game, open to everyone via Steam, the leading online distribution platform.

The Free Full Game Trial of The Ship casts off Thursday, November 2 at 1 pm PDT and will conclude on Sunday, November 5 at the same time.

Built with Source technology, The Ship is the critically acclaimed debut from Outerlight, a UK-based studio. Steam is the first full-featured broadband platform for the delivery and management of PC games and digital content, and has pioneered its broadband services to over 10 million customers around the world.

Set onboard a 1920's luxury liner, Mr X, the Ship's owner has "invited" you to a mysterious game of hunt and hunted, as players must secretly track and extinguish specified passengers while avoiding similar fate.

Neat. Too bad I already bought the full game, and played it to death.

I was slightly interested when it came out but not enough to buy it...I might or might not try the demo...probably not though.

Hmmm after Defcon released I got interested in this game. I just may try this out.

I bought it when it came out, played it a bit that day, then never played it again. The gameplay just didn't grab me.

Awesome. I'll be trying this out.

Edit: Well, since it won't preload for me, I guess not.

I played this for a few days...
A free weekend just means a bunch of people griefing the regulars.

Well, that's kind of cool, yet cruel, way to do a demo for a single player game. Let people play it, and then take it away from them. Give them just a taste, but not something they can just try out casually whenever they want.

I don't know to applaud them, or weep for the future of demos on the PC...

Man, I wanted to play this! Now I can. I don't think it's unique and multidimensional enough to consider a buy (esp at $20..).. but hell, a free weekend is worth it!

Yeah.. how does that preload thing work?
steam://preload/2431 doesn't seem to want to load.. any way to plug it directly in the steam interface?

edit: nm. Working now. Closed steam, then clicked the link.

I'd be trying it if not for FFXII arriving just in time for the weekend. Sorry to the folks who've been wanting me to play it. :(

Well, I'm not sure how else you'd want to do it with a multiplayer game. You want to be getting everyone on board at the same time, coz there's nothing worse than an underpopulated multiplayer game. ..I'm gonna see if I can get it downloaded in time (on dial-up), coz I'm real curious to see what it's all about.

Console gaming pussy.

Didn't you just tell me PC gaming was dead like a week ago? God damn it, who let you out of your room?! GET BACK IN THERE!

It isn't a single-player game. It is multiplayer only. Hmm, you might be able to play with bots, now that I think of it. Wouldn't be much fun, though.

That said, there isn't really a better way to demo a multiplayer game, imho. You get to experience everything the game has to offer, free of cost. By making at a "special weekend" you insure a large crop of demo players to play with, and provide a situation where you don't have to cripple the gameplay(like traditional demos do).

I was ready to plunk down some money for this game before just about everyone who bought it had a laundry list of bugs to report or tired of it within the first 24 hours of owning it. I'll give the demo a shot, but I'm not expecting much.

Yup, pre-loading works now.

Don't know if this is going to work. The Ship only works when you are with players who treat the game with respect (or so I'm told), which isn't something you'd expect from people hopping in for a free weekend.

Y'know, I was just telling someone at work about this today (first gamer I've found there, wooo!) because it seemed like something he'd like. Got home and saw this. I reckon we'll both be checking this out.

Eh. I played this back when it was just another free HL1 mod. It's an interesting concept, but in practice it's largely dull and pointless. And everything I've read suggests this version is just the same game prettied up for Source.
