Gamespot (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/imperator/preview_6123871.html) has released a nifty new preview that goes into some detail about Imperator. An MMORPG set in the far future where Rome never fell and the Mayans have returned from space to claim Earth for themselves.
It's something different in terms of storyline and looks compared to most (if not all) other MMOGs out there right now. The article is pretty interesting, so I suggest if you like MMOGs and or Sci-Fi games that you check it out.

Err, Rome never fell.
We're the neo-romans. I mean just look around.

That's just stupid.

Yeah I for one still pay taxes to Rome and am constantly worried about the imperial legions *rolls eyes*
At any rate I'm sad to see yet another standard issue MMO. After reading the preview I really couldn't see anything in there that made this game sound different from say, Anarchy Online. And baring the sci-fi theme any other MMO pre-wow or EQ2.
If they hope to make it they really should think about offering a new type of character advancement or combat system. And no tweaking one or two small variables and calling it a new system doesn't count.

Dark Age of Rome would have been a better game ;)

Have you seen the trailer? It has lots of text comeing up and at one point it says
"No Matter Where... No Matter When... No Matter Where"

Ha ha ha!
The idea sounds interesting - but we'll have to wait and see if they can come up with something unique or if it's the same old thing all over again

looks totaly retarded, they must have had one HELL of a pitch. Mayans return from space? Cause uh they had spaceships? This is an outrage/qp2846

I meant we inherited everything from the romans. What's stupid is this "what if" roman empire and associated ideas.

Pretty much, cept we don't call'em those these days.

Open message for game developers: WE DO NOT NEED ANY MORE MMORPGS!
Goddamnit.
This seems like a good concept for a game(well, a cult game at least), but it doesn't matter for a MMO because its going to play exact-o-fuckingly like every other MMO, and I'll bet cash money they dont present the story in an effective way.
I have a prediction: This game sells like crap and guild wars+WoW continue to own the genre.

well it's made by the dark age of camelot people so you never know.
after playing gw the graphics kind of suck tho.
but gw does that to a lot of games.

Yeah GW is just beautiful.
Other than renaming the human forces Romans, and the invading super advanced, armor wearing, laser shooting aliens the Mayans, how is this storyline any different than the millions of other "Earth Invaded" storylines? Humans (Romans) always seem to be stuck with projectile weapons not much more advanced than we have today, even though they now have massive starships, teleportation and whatnot. The aliens (Mayans) are super advanced with all kinds of nifty looking guns, ships, and armor. I could probably sit and name two hundred books/games/TV shows with the same premise, most notably a little game called Halo.
GW has spoiled me now to anything MMO I think. The thought of 100 levels and thusly months of my life spend in the grinder is no longer appealing at all (not that it really was for me in the first place). I really like the idea of what is essentially a single player game that I can share with thousands of other people (sort of a contradiction I know, but anyone who has played GW knows what I mean).
On the other hand, I do like the sci-fi setting. At least someone is trying something slightly different. For all the praise I heap upon GW, the storyline and setting aren't its greatest assets. Don't get me wrong, some of the storyline missions are just badass, but still not very original.
In the end this game does not interest me, and unless it comes out and is just the biggest, most game-world-changing event this decade, I'll be passing. Good luck to those who give it a shot, hope it turns out to be fun.

What I really want to see is a fallout stile rpg set in Rome during either Caligula's, or Nero's, reign.
*sigh*, I think it would be a little over the heads of most gamers. Maybe the next elder scrolls game will have a great editor and I can put together a mod team...
