IGN (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/741/741716p1.html) has a summary of a Famitsu interview with Izumi Kawanishi, the man in charge hardware development for both the PSP and PS3. In the article he talks about the connectivity between the two. He also says that connectivity will only work with the 60GB model because it has built-in WiFi. (It's unclear whether this can be achieved through a WiFi adapter or by connecting the PS3 to a wireless router. ) He also discusses allowing firmware updates of the PS3 to occur through flash memory and via games and media, like the PSP.

Kawanishi revealed to Famitsu that Sony's plans go beyond just media viewing, though. In the future, Sony hopes to allow players to play PS3 games remotely via the PSP. While Kawanishi didn't get into specifics, we imagine the PSP being used just to display game footage sent to it by the PS3 and send back controller data input by the player.

I expect we'll see similar things with the DS and Wii. Is that known yet for sure or just a hope?

I could see this working very well to play minigames (for both the PS3 and the Wii). I'd love to see some games with extra little games built into them for use on their respective portables (like what Sega did with the VMU).

Not going to happen. I run VNC/RDP/Timbuktu at work and even moving your mouse around remotely over a LAN is laggy. Too much latency.

If this were feasible, laptop gaming over VNC would be huge. You could have a powerful desktop rig sitting at home and then just a cheap laptop to stream your games to from anywhere over the net.

Well... I guess that throws functionality similar to the GBA/GCN out the window. Not too many developers are gonna touch it if only half the systems even have the capability to do it.

I suppose this could be in the same vein as Nintendo's GC/GBA connectivity feature, in that you link up your PSP with PS3 games that have some sort of minigame/unlockable feature for a nice bonus.

If it's only for the 60 gig version, how many developers will support it?

What if the PS3 only rendered a 320x480 image and sent that. That way it wouldn't have to send a desktop or HD resolution image. Local wi-fi is surely fast enough for that.

The PS3 has a USB port. The PSP has a USB port. Why not just plug the damn thing in for connectivity?

If it's only for the 60 gig version, how many developers will support it? Fewer than supported GBA/GameCube connectivity. :(

If this is talking about something similar to the GBA/GCN connectivity then, well, good for them but I don't care too much.

But if if they are talking about using the PSP as a screen like any other, just a low res screen, it's completely awesome. Think about it...play through the boring parts of a game in the comfort of your bed! That would be something to get excited about. 10mb/s on a wireless connection may be fast enough for this sort of thing; I don't know enough about it to say. But if Sony does pull it off, they'll have quite the feather in their cap.

PSP doesn't even have tilt feature of a PS3 control along with lack of buttons and a thumbstick. Not gonna happen. Gimmick at best.

I really hope that it is true, becaue then i would be able to unload my psp for more than pennies on the dollar.

This is so much different both conceptually and practically, from what Sony is doing that your statement and experience is moot.

Hey, if you don't want your PSP, I'll take it. I could always use a second machine to keep permanantly downgraded for homebrew. ;)

I wonder if a PSP/PS3 bundle might be in the works.

The analog nub and the shoulder buttons on the PSP are terrible.. not too mention the square button that is kinda iffy

So is this a "Live Anywhere" wanabe? I can just imagine tuning my Gran Turismo ride at a WiFi spot with my PSP.

Actually they would be really cool! If I was playing, for example, a turn-based strategy on my home PC with built-in remote access, I could pull-out my hand-held and run a few turns while in the boardroo...bathroo... lunch room. Maybe even on the bus or something, that would be neat.

Just imagine live CIV IV with your friends, while you are at work!

I think lag would be a huge issue here. If you had a 60 ping, there would be a pretty long delay for your motions. This isn't similar to a 60 ping online game. In a 60 ping online game, your PC does a lot of guessing as to what you're going to do so the response is instant. This would be more like playing Quake 1 (if anyone remembers that), which didn't have any guessing in the code. You'd press forward and have to wait a tick before your character moved forward.

It semi-is. My CRT died a few months ago.. I've been VNC'ing to my Desktop via my Laptop. Now, my laptop is a bit old, so It could be a bottleneck here, but I'm not entirely sure. I use TightVNC, and it is pretty damned fast. I use a 1600x1200 resolution, and I do the normal web-browsing and all of that just fine. My computer (desktop) will lag like hell when a large video is playing, though. However, you-tube sized videos play great, actually. They're probably the same size as the PSP's screen, so I doubt it would be a problem. I also use full-color, which increases the load greatly.

Based upon what I've been doing.. this is entirely feasible, as long as the wireless can handle it (all my stuff is hard-wired)

Oh, as far as systems go.. my laptop runs Kubuntu, and my Desktop runs Windows XP. I have installed the Mirror driver on XP, so TightVNC doesn't have to poll my windows for updates.. the Mirror driver helps a HUGE amount.

I use Microsoft remote desktop from home and it's BLAZING fast. It's as if I'm at the office!

They would definitely need to come up with some sort of "wake-over-internet" feature, where the PS3 is kept in a standby mode with the networking stuff powered on at all times. Otherwise you'd have to keep the PS3 on all day if you plan on playing it remotely.
