4 color rebellion (www.4colorrebellion.com) has a few screenshots of the upcoming Wii browser. Within this article (http://www.4colorrebellion.com/archives/2006/10/24/wii-browser-screenshots/) there is a nice little bit of information.
For the first six months, Opera on Wii is free. If you download it during that period, it is free forever. You will not have to pay again after the first six months. It is only if you download it after the first six months that you will have to pay a one-time fee for the browser.
Good times.

Looks like I have four months to buy a Wii.

Wait, why four months?

Great news. Still sucks for those who adopt a Wii later on... but beggars can't be choosers, I suppose.
Who wants to bet that the six month time period just happens to be the same time the Wii gets its first price drop?
Ill buy it till price drop and read the reviews and all that crap :)

I would not be amazed to find out they change their mind---especially after getting the "free browser" buyers on board in the initial six months.

This is Nintendo's reward to the faithful. Believe in Wii and thou shall browse the internets using a remote!

I'm still wondering why the Xbox 360 doesn't have a browser.
Or does it?

A revolution in itself, something that's the reverse of fucking early adopters.

Well... what's the one time fee?

If my guess is right, about the size of the Wii price drop :D

If there is just a one-time fee and I can use the browser for free for the life of the system...sign me up! :D

You honestly think they're going to have a price drop within the first SIX MONTHS of it's launch?
You must expect it to sell like shit (which it very well may, who knows).
Like... really smelly shit that's been sitting in the rotting rectum of a diseased hobo's bloated, sun baked body.

I'm still wondering why the Xbox 360 doesn't have a browser.
Or does it?
Because
A) It's a useless feature.
B) There's a chance your console gets infected with a virus and then you are screwed because there's no way for you to remove it.
Uh.
How is this good news? I dont understand people.

A.) It's not that great on a console, but it's far from useless for some people and a nice bonus either way.
B.) If they can't put in some basic security measures to stop the console from getting infected in any way, then there shouldn't be a browser.
How is this good news? I dont understand people.
Um, what? How is it bad news? It's not earth-shattering, but I don't see what's not good about it.

I will use the Wii browser for one reason: to look at porn. Not so much for the porn itself, mainly just for the amusement of having naked ladies cavorting around on a Nintendo system.

It's also a part of Nintendo history. The SNES, N64, and Gamecube all received price drops in one form or another within that time frame.
I should know, I won a $50 bet when I bet that the N64 would drop in price in Februrary after its launch :D

I have to wonder though... If I get a new console or get my memory wiped or something.. Do I have to pay again?
No Persistant online account separate from the system itself points to yes...

Guess that would depend if it is attached to your systems friend code (account type thing).

Perhaps you didn't realize that it was earlier announced that the Wii's browser would cost money, disc? Then we later heard it would be free for the first six months, though it was unknown if it meant 'free to use' or 'free if you download it in that time frame.' Now we get confirmation that it's free, totally, for the early adopters, so it's good news.

How is this even news? It's been know for ages that the browser would be free for the first six months and after that cost a one time fee for any latecomers. Pretty sure Nintendo even said as much back when they announced it.
This is just because of that shitty Sony list, isn't it?

I'll probably never use it, but what the heck, it's free.

I think it's news because some people were confused by what "free for 6 months" meant. I think even evil himself was interpretting it as a 6 month demo that would expire, at which point you'd have to purchase it.

Good news for those of us who are getting the console early. However, I doubt the cost of the Opera browser is going to be more than the price of a budget game, so it's not a huge incentive for those on the fence.
Sweet. 6 months to get a Wii then. Good times indeed... :D

Because Microsoft doesn't want you accessing any content where they don't get part of the pie.
If you had a browser, you could get arcade games from somebody else.
If you had a browser, you could get music from somebody else.
If you had a browser, you could get video from somebody else.
...and in most of those cases, Microsoft wouldn't realize any profit from the transaction.
Find it kind of amazing how either a) short-sighted, or b) dumb some people are to not realize how useful a browser could be on a console. Once the number one console(whomever that is)has a browser, you can bet that people will create websites specifically tailored to that market. It means more content for everybody. Even if most of the content is crap, there'll still be plenty worth accessing.

It wouldn't be hard at all for Microsoft to put in a browser with restrictions preventing you from getting movies, music, and especially games from it.

Yeah, but they can't do that and then spin it as anything other than what they were doing.
As it stands now, there are "technical" reasons you can't have a browser on the 360 and are limited solely to supping at Microsoft's table. If they put in a hamstrung browser that only worked with Microsoft content everybody would pitch a fit.

Umm... I don't expect Wii or PS3's browsers to let you d/l movies, music, or games that aren't Sony or Nintendo endorsed. I don't know why you would.

Hey one thing some people might like with a browser would be if they can do like the 360 does... press that button and you leave the game to do some stuff then you go back in the game (sorry, I don't have a 360 so I know next to nothing about it.... never even see them much at stores for messing with)... You could play a game... get stuck... go to gamefaqs or some other site... look up what to do.. then back into the game. All w/o leaving your gaming chair/couch/floor/whatever.
Though if you don't have the ability to step out of the game then resume it... it wouldn't be as helpful/convenient.
And to Kefkataran... I dunno. I bet you can download movies and whatnot. But whether you can play them is the question.
Edit: Can't watch nonSony movies? BUT THE PS3 IS THE NEW COMPUTER!

Yeah, I can see being able to quickly jump to gamefaqs as being quite convenient. Hopefully Nintendo will put in a nice suspend function that'll allow you to jump to other functions of the console. It should be pretty easy to do something similar with the PS3, as it's got enough hard drive space to easily dump everything in RAM.

Nintendo has the stupidest logic ever. They won't include CD or DVD support in their system because "they can already play them somewhere else," but they include web browsing.

From the presentation Sony did, you can play streaming Flash stuff (like YouTube), and pretty sure that's been confirmed for Wii as well, but I'm still highly doubting either will let you download any media that's not got their stamp on it.

Oh man, great thinking. That would be one of the best uses of the web browser for either of those. I hope they do that as well!

That's what I was suggesting :(
I dunno though. I guess they could just deny you the ability to download movie files and stuff. I just think it seems more like they'd let you download them but not watch them. Though that would suck to wait on I guess.
I can see why Sony might not want you to but I can't think of why Nintendo wouldn't, aside from not having a hard drive and stuff.....
edit: Actually now that I think of it, downloading movies w/o being able to play them does seem like a bad idea. But how would they differentiate between their movies and others? Or would you only be able to download a certain Nintendo movie file type?

More likely there'd be a specific website/program set up through the Wii browser for getting Nintendo content, including the downloadable games and movies. Just like there is in XBL, except there's a browser too.

Does Opera support flash and quicktime plugins? I'd assume so, and hopefully this version will do the same. You'd at least be able to watch streaming stuff.
