This miniseries is another comedic attempt by Dan Slott whose other work includes the very funny She-Hulk. Unfortunately this series is not even close to being as enjoyable as his work on the She-Hulk. The issue is very weak in story/plot and the comedy falls flat and feels forced. The premise of the GLA, which stands for the Great Lakes Avengers, is that it’s a joke and Slott plays that card to death. In other words, watching an episode of Nick and Jessica Simpson would be more fun. The artwork by Paul Pelletier is excellent; he deserves a shot at a decent mainstream book in his portrayal of the various superheroes that are asked to join the pathetic GLA.

Bottom Line:
Avoid this book even if you enjoy Slott’s other work then stick with it. But keep your eyes open for Paul Pelletier work.

Deadworld #1 (An ongoing series)

Publisher: Image Comics
Writer: Gary Reed
Illustrated by: Vince Locke
Letters: Nate Pride
Cover artist: Vince Locke
Price: $3.50 US/$4.25 CAN

This is a reboot of the cult-classic zombie comic, Deadworld. The original series went for 26 or so issues and started in the late 1980s, the entire history can be read here ( http://calibercomics.com/DEADWORLD/shortsyn.htm). Vince Locke who was the artist for the original series returns with Gary Reed who wrote a few of the issues in the original series. Reed confirms in the back of this issue that this is not a strict re-telling of the series, but it will incorporate many of the key plot and characters from the original series and expand upon them.

Now with all of that being said, the plot is pretty standard for zombie stories but there isn’t much in the form of characterization or dialogue. It doesn’t help that Locke’s artwork is very sketchy and it’s hard to keep the human characters straight. If compared with the recent zombie comics such as The Walking Dead, this book just pales in comparison. However, being a fan of the original series I am willing to buy the next few issues to see if they take this anywhere.

Bottom Line:
If you’re a fan of the horror/zombie genre, give this book at least a look through. If you’re on the fence, get a few issues or the Trade Paperbacks (TPB) of The Walking Dead or if you can find TPBs of the original Deadworld they are worth the effort in tracking down.

Thanks to Caliber Comics ( http://calibercomics.com/) for the Deadworld link. ( http://calibercomics.com/DEADWORLD/shortsyn.htm)

For those in the Michigan or surrounding states, the Motor City Comic Convention (http://motorcitycomiccon.com/) is occurring this coming weekend from Friday May 13 through Sunday May 15 in Novi, Michigan. This is a pretty decent convention with some bigger artists, writers and media stars with plenty of dealers with decent deals on toys, comics and such. I am heading there on Sunday, so reviews might be late next week. :)

Remember, these books as well as back issues, trade paperbacks, toys and statues are available at BCBcomics (http://www.bcbcomics.com/).

And btw I'm guessing only North-Americans can win those comics? (No problem if you don't want to pay international shipping fees, just asking)

Ja, Porto Kosten nach Deutschland sind sehr teuer, speziell wenn sie für einen Gratis Wettbewerb sind. Vielleicht irgendwann in Zukunft.
