IGN (http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/729/729189p1.html) has some hands on impression of the XBox Live play included with the upcoming XBox 360 JRPG Enchanted Arms. The battles play out exactly the same as they do in the game aside from the time limit. The end of the battle is when things go a little bit south. At the end of every battle you're asked if you'd like to make the opponent a preferred player regardless of whether you have previously played them and marked them as such. After that, you're spit out into the setup screen without any option for rematches. This makes sense for ranked matches, but when you're playing a friendly match against a friend and are suddenly disconnected from them, you begin to think that things could have been designed better.

Why oh why do developers continuously make this mistake? Every game I've seen this happen in totally ruins the on line play.

well at least they can address it in a patch :)

it's not gonna matter because so many people are dropping the game from the list because one of the main characters is gay. not just casually gay, either.

Yeah, you're right. Playing a game with a "gay" character totally ruins it. I mean, JRPGs have never had effeminate charcters.

If a "gay" character is your only reason to not play this game I'm going to say you're a moron. The gameplay looks like a blast, it's turn based and the graphics are top notch.

Maybe these "so many people" are just closet homosexuals afraid that playing a "gay" character might get them too excited.

I'm trying to be nice but goddamn that is such an ignorant comment, socco.

Oh yeah. I do agree with you, ba. But then again I'm not buying the game for online. ;)

i'm just saying what i've read other people saying elsewhere (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/rpg/emenchantarm/forum.html). i'm a fag and have no problem playing games with them in it, though i don't make it a priority. i've wanted the game long before i even knew about him.

Why all this hate?

I think I'll probably pick up Enchanted Arms just becuase it has a gay character in it. I mean when you come to think about it, isn't it wonderful that game design has become so mature that it is actually able to pick up the subject of homosexuality?

This is progress. We are moving away from the horrific idea that games are for kids.

Then why not just say that you are looking forward to playing it instead of bascially saying, "omg! it has a gay person in it! don't play it!"

well i didn't say anything remotely close to that.

my comment was just simply meant to illustrate that it won't matter for a lot of people if the live play is flawed, because so many people aren't even giving it a chance just because of that.

I'm not going to thread jack and argue semantics with you. That is what your post came across as whether you meant it or not.

Back on subject: get the game and play it. A great JRPG by From Software (Chromehounds) is something a MS console has needed for a long time. I'm still trying to figure out how they thought having a British developer try to make a JRPG was going to work with Sudeki.

Everybody in line at gamestop was picking up Saints Row, none of them were picking up Enchanted Arms.

Part of that is demographics, but I think a bigger part is the lack of a demo on live.

Saints Row came out yesterday and Enchanted Arms comes out today. That's probably why they were not picking it up yesterday. ;)

Out of all the gay people that I know, I have never heard one of them refer to themselves in such a derogatory manor. You fucking liar.

I didn't even know this had multiplayer. I have it in my Q, hopefully it's a decent game.

I'd be careful with the generalization. For example some blacks (and others)love to toss around the N word. Not all people of various ethnic persuasion and sexuality are all enlightened.

That said, I'm slighty interested in this game, gay guy or not, flawed online system or not. I'll just wait until either I hear more about it or if more on my friends list have it and want to play it online.

 not as if it's proof, but go to gaymer.org and i use the same name there. or check out my livejournal, again, same name.

you guys are trying too hard to make something out of nothing. i make a comment contributing to the actual story, that's basically saying what others are saying and everyone is turning it and my comments against me.

No, it's not mature, at least not in this instance.

This character is gay in the most flamboyant, camp, stereotypical manner you could imagine.

He's gay for the purpose of many "Hah! Look at the crazy gay man! He's so silly! Point and laugh!" jokes.

Although I think he's probably the first character I've ever seen where they actually outright say he's gay, as opposed to treating it as a bit of a taboo and just (very) heavily implying it.

EDIT: If you want to know what this character is like, I thought of the perfect example. The game is Japanese made, and there's a popular tv comedian over there whose "act" and jokes come from exactly the same place as this character. Go and youtube "Hard Gay" and you'll get an idea of the purpose of the gay character in EM. I hafta say, I do find some of it humorous, but it's hardly a mature representation furthering an equal image of homosexuals. In fact, thinking about it now, the only place I've ever seen a homosexual play in any Japanese media (games/tv/manga/anime) is this flamboyant comic sidekick, never supposed to be taken seriously.

Back on topic, the multiplayer is very much an afterthought. I tried it once, had connection issues all through and never went back. Largely pointless.

The link you provided is to GameSpot. The collective mental ability of the posters there is equal to about a can of peaches, so I wouldn't take it too seriously. But yeah, I can see that happening. Overall, gamers do tend to be more on the "redneck" than "enlightened" end of the social scale. No offense to anyone on this board!

You're kidding, right? I live in Chicago and have many gay/lesbian friends who use that term all the time (or dyke for the lesbos). Hell, even I call them fag, and I'm straight. But then again I think it depends on who is saying it. They know I love them, so it's not derogatory.

I don't know if soco is gay or not, but using the word "fag" if you're gay is pretty common. At least, in the big cities.

Here, look at this trailer (http://www.gametrailers.com/player.php?id=12498&type=mov&pl=game). That has got to be one of the most offensive stereotypes I've seen in a long time. It's like they decided to put Carson Kressley into a video game. I'm gay and even I wouldn't want to sit through 40 hours of that!

Oh man, is that legitimate? That's painful. I mean, I know people like that, but that voice...holy shit is it irritating. Hell, that might just be a reason for me not to buy it. Not because of the gay character, but because that voice is just so grating. I'd had enough in the minute or so trailer. Several hours? No thanks. :(

I thought I read somewhere that the original Japanese language track was available. Anyone know if this is true?

On the other Hand Multiplayer looks like a total shitty
Online on the other hand is where your Golems come into play, but we will see how much fun that will be

And that voice over does sound really annoying

I hate it when Xbox live games do that. It shouldn't be allowed. A patch will rectify this.

FNR 3 does this too. I should be able to create a lobby with me and my bud and fight forever. (this is where one of you say you can do it) :(

You're right. I mean flamboyant characters are never popular and are always immature. "Just Jack!" from Will & Grace was such a stereotype and why I stopped watching. how insulting! :p Don't forget about my Tom Cruise threat, Lonely. I wasn't kidding! :D

Yes, but the character's voice has just the same intonation in the Japanese version.

Gunny, as I said, I do find it funny every now and then, but the way the stereotype is used in most Japanese media is undoubtedly belittling.

I have many gay friends who refer to themselves as "fags", the same way my gangsta friends use "nigga" to refer to themsleves. They are making the word their own, thereby rendering it harmless. Most of them also just think it is funny as hell.

Also, whether or not soco is actually gay, he makes a good point. I would imagine that sales will be at least somewhat damaged by having a flamboyantly gay character. That comes both from homophobes as well as overly sensitive homosexuals.

If I had a 360, I would like to pick this up. However, even if I had the money to drop on one, this game would not be the system seller for me.

I've got nothing but love for all sexuals, but that even made me cringe. Any one of my gay/lesbian friends would have laughed and then questioned me thoroughly as to whether or not this game was actually coming out.

"Get your ugly face away from him! He's mine!"

"My face?! Ugly?!" (or something like this)

"That's right, sister! I'm just telling it like it is, honey."

Good news. They're coming out (er, so to speak) with a patch that's going to straighten out (er, so to speak) the gay character. It's got an extra Y chromosome and a heaping helping of testosterone. By the way, the patch is optional, so pillow biters can have their character as can homophobes. Bisexuals will have a tough choice to make.
