Back in the day (aka 10 years ago) Happy Puppy (http://www.happypuppy.com) was THE PLACE to get your Shareware games and demos. Now the site doesn't really exist. For one lucky company/individual/demi-god though, they have a chance to snag HappyPuppy.com (http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/news/?id=13663) as it has been put up for sale.
"HappyPuppy is one of the oldest and most celebrated gaming websites in existence," said Shawn Tooley, president, DMA Holdings. "Even with the lack of consistent updates and maintenance to the site, traffic numbers have remained substantial."
I used to go to that site daily. Hopefully someone will revive it!

i used to love that site as well, just like i used to love toms hardware. but then the bubble came around and they all decided to go corporate, nothing but ads all over the place and 'change for the "better"', so i stopped going to them.
same as avault.
F 'em, you lose sight of your audience in this game and its buh-bye.

Ahh I remember the days when I knew it only as a cheat website; used to go there for all my codes and shiz'

HappyMonkey was better.
The problem is, even if someone revives the website, the "gaming website marketplace" is so fucking flooded that it doesn't even matter. There's hundreds of gaming-focused websites, and so many get lost in the big rush that it's impossible to appreciate them all.

HappyPuppy was the best many, many years ago. It was one of my original bookmarks.

HappyPuppy still is in my bookmarks (it gets opened automatically when i go to EvAv and Joystiq (don't worry, I only go there to ask for directions on how to get away from there). I hope the site goes back up, I'd miss that smug little dog so much :(

holy flashback batman!
thats a domain name I havent thought of in a LONG time. That was the best game site. When I got an N64 I started to frequent n64.com (which became IGN) and forgot about happypuppy.

I loved Happy Puppy... but let it die. There's just no need.

I find it amusing that www.gamesages.com still redirects to cheats.ign.com

it's funny to sit back and reminice about how the internet used to be and how little it resembles itself.
I remember going to happy puppy back when my family had AOL and downloading demos. Going to happypuppy.com was like going to the candy store.

You know, its funny. I was JUST thinking about Happypuppy. I used to love going there to download the odd Apogee game and try to sort out the freeware from the shareware. I used to LOVE that place. I remember it went down for a long time, then came back up as a shell of its former self, and now it looks like the owners have given up the ghost.
God damn, that's a blast from the past. Happy Puppy and Game Revolution were my original gaming websites when I first got on this internet band wagon.

Very true, and even if the site were revived, it would be a totally different staff, so even if it was the same Happypuppy in name, would it be the same Happypuppy in spirit?

Happy Puppy was like GameFAQs for my childhood. And if you ever wanted that "overly large" Duke Nukem 3D demo to feed a fledgling addiction to LAN parties, they were the place to go.
Sigh.

I don't have any fond memories of Happy Puppy.
Especially when they would "borrow" reviews without quoting/linking the source.

Historical note: the former proprietor of Happypuppy sold the site for millions and blew all the money on toys and Ren Faire stuff. She now begs for donations at her personal website (http://jenniverse.com/). The Happypuppy domain is probably cursed or at the very least soiled beyond all use -- I wouldn't take it for free.

Don't kid yourself, it'll probably get turned into a bestiality paysite.
It'll be like that Zelda.com debacle back in 2000/2001. Kids that would search for Zelda stuff would go there and it was kinky lesbian on lesbian stuff. Now innocent (ahaha) kids who want to learn about happypuppies, or hear about the fabled HAPPYPUPPY site, will go there, and see... um. Yeah. You know. Stuff.

Oh, I remember HappyPuppy fondly.
There should be a list of all of the top gaming websites circa 1995-1998 so I could remember where I USED to go for all my game news and how most of them aren't around anymore (or have been swallowed up by CNet)...

My favorites were sCary's Shugashack (I refuse to go to "Shack News" -- things changed when sCary became "Steve Gibson"), Operation 3dfx (wasn't there a nasty breakup of the team, then someone got cancer?), Adrenaline Vault (doesn't realise it's dead yet), Voodoo Extreme (before the drama and breakup), and Happy Puppy.
Back then, it seemed like all the good sites were run by people who loved games, until UGO, IGN, and Gamespot ruined the world. Of course, I also lived beyond my means, soaking up student loans and credit card debt like a sponge -- the good old days!

It was probably during the Ion Storm days of Bitch X and the insider pre-blog looks into the decadence of the Romero. At least that's how I find EvAv...
