View Full Version : Syndicate, Populous, and Dungeon Keeper to make Comback in future?

Strategy Informer (http://www.strategyinformer.com/) has learned that Peter Molyneux from Lionhead, was recently talking with Game-spot about what he's up to in the industry. He went on to say that he'd like to create more titles for Syndicate, Populous, and Dungeon Keeper which is great news right? I used to love playing all 3 of these titles, especially Dungeon keeper. EA Currently owns the rights so we could see some new titles in those series but will it really happen? Peter says that he can't really bring them back by himself. Time will tell once again here.

I played Dungeon Keeper 2 a few months ago and it holds up very well even after all these years. Cranking up the resolution and it looks very good, even today. I love that game. I would love to see what they could do with it with today's technology.
Best part of the game, possessing your minions and going around your dungeon in first person.

Dungeon keeper 2 is great also, was it the first game to kind of be a hybrid? In the way you could jump to FPS and then back to Strategy. I can't seem to think what other game did that in 1996.

Peter, don't you DARE fuck up Dungeon Keeper.
Just thought I'd echo Savok's sentiment.

Syndicate needs an update. Nothing like having a crowd of 100 with uzi's....awesome.

I don't care much for Populous...but they can bring back the other two. Maybe a Magic Carpet remake.

It's all wishful thinking.
Has EA ever given up an IP?
Best that will happen is EA will make a halfassed game based on the old classics and ruin my best memories of them.
Populous 9: Xtreme godhood. With Bam Maguera as the opposing god.

And butcher them down to fit on 360? and to cater to the twitchy console crowd?
Like Deus Ex: IW, Bard's Tale or Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel?
No, thanks.
Keep them PC only or keep them in memory.

I didn't get the feeling that this is what he meant.
Otherwise why mention he can't do it himself?

Prove me wrong. I provided you with 3 examples of how good, nah - GREAT PC franchises were *destroyed* by coming to the Xbox.
I don't want the same to happen to Syndicate and Dungeon Keeper.
Magic Carpet would work on a console, though, I'll give you that.

So long as I don't have to create a damn boot disk. Syndicate was and is an awesome game.

And Thief: Deadly Shadows. Decent game on the PC once you installed the tweaks that got rid of all the console garbage, but even then it didn't really hold up compared to the previous iterations.
I'd love for a new Syndicate and Dungeon Keeper game, but keep them on the PC. You're right that a Magic Carpet game would rock on the consoles.

Syndicate and Dungeon Keeper please.
I'm a bit sequel'd out on Populous though.
Syndicate would work fine on a console.
Probably better if I could share control over my minions with other players.
And add some damn multiplayer.

Syndicate was SUCH a good game, but I doubt that it will be anything like the original if brought back today. He'd probably make it a first person shooter or something, which would be lame. If he kept the original style and feel, I'd be all over it.
Oh, and Game-spot? Why is there a dash?

But at least you got Prince of Persia :D
Alas, that's the only thing I could come up on good PC to Xbox conversion. On the reverse flow, I'm gonna add Rainbow 6 and Baldur's Gate. :)

Yeah, but PC should have its own special version. Tactical game works best with a mouse. I don't want PC version gimped because the interface is designed for gamepad.

I fully realize that I'm wasting my time but here goes:
DX:IW wasn't destroyed it had it's focus changed. You didn't like it. Got that figured, but it was a developmental decision that would have happened either way.
Fallout and the Bard's Tale were dead before they ever came to the console.
I loved both on the PC and still admit that they were dead as franchises.
The Bard's Tale on the console was simply a way to keep an IP alive. As a game itself it wasn't bad.
Truth be told, The Bards Tale wouldn't work on the PC nowadays either.
Fallout sucked , no doubt, but it's not because of it being a console title. It just as easily could have been a Diablo style clone that blew chunks also.
Mechwarrior and Shadowrun, don't count as being ruined by going to console as a. Shadowrun's best game was on a console. and b. Mechwarrior and Mechassault are different games set in the same world. Much like Ultima and Ultima Underworld were.
Let's talk about games that were better or more fully realized as a game on console, Like Farcry. Seems like the console brought that game's best parts out.
Borys, It's fine that you have a pc and you love it. I'm just sick of the bashing.
Me, I'm a technological Hippie. Peace and Love man. Some day the PC and the console will be hand in hand as brothers.

If you read interviews with those involved in the game, a tonne of the design changes were due to a console/PC release. It's not the consoles fault - I'm not sure Borys was saying that - but what is faulty is the system of delivering games to both console and PC platforms.
Also, I would just like to echo the 'don't fuck up Dungeon Keeper,' crowd.

I would so love a new Dungeon Keeper or a Syndicate. Synd was one of my favorite RTS type games ever. Wow what a fun game and always such interesting weapons. I even liked the sequal, where you could get oribital wepons to really take down buildings.
I halfway expect the next Syndicate to be a squad based FPS. Though even THAT could be done well if you still kept that whole "I'm controlling everything from a high tech blimp, that could be blown up at any time if the shareholders aren't happy."
As to both, all I can say is don't fuckup, and Ill forgive Peter M for Fable and Black and White being so overhyped and undergamed.

I got my point delivered, nice, some people agree, others don't - that's life.
I would just love to have PC/ console gaming separated. Leave PC stuff on the PC and make use of PC advantages, same thing goes to console stuff. Would I like to play Sly 2: Band of Thieves or God of War on my PC? Hell no.
Don't make multiplatform crap because you almost always end up hurting the PC fanbase.
PC first, console second is the best ideology to be honest. You can easily downgrade textures and cut levels to loading zones to fit in consoles limited memory. You can change the GUI by making fonts and icons larger.
Stiching is harder than cutting.

Yes, you have delivered a point. My agreement or not is irrelevant.
The problem I have is you deliver it over and over.

I wouldn't mind if it was even constructive, but it's not.

OMG, I NEVER want to see Dungeon Keeper resurrected. I don't care about any of the others, but Dungeon Keeper is precious to me. EA or Peter would just fuck it up, and I'll serious go apeshit if that ever happens. LEAVE MY FOND MEMORIES OF THE FIRST DK ALONE!
They already proved with DK2 that a third one would just be shit. DK2 had so many fucking bugs it was ridiculous.
Man, this news really shat on my day. Thanks a lot Jamie. :p

X-Com 3: Apocalypse ~1997 gave the option of turn-based or RTS mode.
Messiah, in 2000, was a hybrid 3rd-person platformer along with FPS.
Those are the only somewhat early ones I can think of.

You know... all those games were awesome. I really miss bullfrog, Peter jumped ship and he has'nt really put out a game of their caliber to date... Makes ya wonder how much influence he really had. Was bullfrog successfull because they kept him more reined in and not hyping everything to infinity? or was he more inconsequential ?:P

Dungeon keeper was awesome, Dungeon keeper 2 was a lot worse but still pretty cool. Neat cinematics.
The Syndicate games also rocked

I agree. But it seems unlikey to revert back to that.
Its just easiler to make it all lower quality in the first place. :(

Your Dungeon Heart is being attacked? I remeber mining everthing in the level until I could find the power-up that would allow me to bring my high level vampire with me into every new map.
I would really enjoy Syndicate and Dungeon Lords.

You said yourself a "technological hippie". Well, hippie doesn't mind if anything is contructive or not?
Borys has an opinion that his fav Platform should be "defended". You got your "technologal hippie" idea. Fine. They're opinions dammit. :)

I just want to say, Dungeon Keeper, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!!!
The last time I tried to play DK2, there was some sound bug with XP, I couldnt fix it at the time, I was very sad in the pants =[
Syndicate and Populous didnt really capture my attention, but I can see contemporary remakes being cool, especially for Syndicate. I remember liking the idea for Syndicate a lot, but the gameplay was a little frusterating to my then nub skills. I did not have the PC ver. so that might have made a diff. (i'm sure the controls would have been less frusterating for me).

Wasn't that pretty gimmicky though? Like you couldn't really do anything in FPS mode except watch the action from a different angle?

If you dial up the WAY BACK machine, actually the first game to do it was Lords of Midnight (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lords_of_Midnight) back in 1984. Ground breaking game for its time! Semi-3d, 3 modes of play, etc...

Of course the original Dungeon Keeper had a first person mode too - no one mentioned that.

Nope. You could attack, cast spells, scout, eat, or mine gold/dirt/gems, depending on what creature you possessed.
I wouldn't mind a new version of Populous. The god-game genre is dead, and it was always one of my favorites. A new Magic Carpet could be cool too - a "friend" of mine ruined my copy. Bastard. I just don't want to see the DK franchise resurrected and sullied.
