RUMOR ALERT: Wii Release Date Coming Soon?

Oh, speculation, how we love thee. Courtesy of digg (http://www.digg.com): the Nintendo Wii Chat forums are all abuzz with a supposed internal memo being sent around to employees of the UK Virgin Megastores. From the post in question (http://www.wiichat.com/latest-nintendo-wii-news/1380-wii-release-date-unveiled-tomorrow.html):

Here's a photocopy of an internal memo sent around UK Virgin megastores. The memo details the use of 'Nintendo Wii Countdown Clocks' that will obviously ticker down to the official launch date/time of the wii console.

The memo also states that Nintendo will be contacting the aforementioned stores on the 14th August for installation of these timers.

At first people interpreted this as "Nintendo will be installing the clocks on the 14th." Now people are saying "Nintendo will be contacting you about installing the clocks on the 14th." What it boils down to is... well, we still have no clue what the release date for the Wii is or when it will be coming for sure. We'll keep you posted if anything comes of this, but I'm not holding my breath.

Imran on the Penny Arcade forums just got a call from his EB's manager, saying they'll be taking Wii preorders within the next two weeks. Seems a little more concrete.

I'll keep watching for news, as the Wii is likely to be the only next-gen system I'm likely to adopt this year. It's gonna be worth it right from day one, for me anyway. That's more than I can say for some other systems. Wii60 looks real good in the long term as well. ^_^

Would of been nice to know yesterday, to save the hours I wasted searching every store within two hundred miles of here for the Wii. I questioned several dozen employees:

"Do you have a Wii that I can play with?"
"I would like to buy one of your Wiis, please."

While the DS Lite was released there last, they were given a sessy, exclusive black version. Also, several highly anticipated titles will be released in Europe before the US (ex: Final Fantasy III), as well as the upcoming Opera browser.

Well, Opera is a Norwegian company so I would expect nothing less. Nintendo are nicer to us Europeans than they have been, but they have still a long way to go. Wii before X-mas would make up for everything :)

I think October is a great month for the Wii to hit, but Nintendo might also want to go head to head with PS3 and underscore there position as a affordable alternative to PS3. I say go with the Wii60.
