Gamespot states that (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6155660.html?tag=latestnews;title;0) SD Gundam G Generation Portable (5 times fast) for the PSP outsold New Super Mario Bros. in Japan last week, reaching the #1 spot. Brain Age finally slipped out of the top 10 to #12 and the newly released Starfox DS entered the market at a disappointing #14.

1 SD Gundam G Generation Portable (PSP)
2 New Super Mario Bros. (DS)
3 Jissen Pachi-Slot Hisshouhou! Hokuto no Ken SE (PS2)
4 Tamagotchi no Puchi Puchi Omisecchi Gohi-Kini (DS)
5 Mario Hoops 3 on 3 (DS)
6 Kahashima Ryuuta Kyouju Kanshuu: Motto Nou o Kitaeru Otona DS (DS)
7 Shaberu! DS Oryouri Navi (DS)
8 Sengoku Basara 2 (PS2)
9 Rhythm Tengoku (GBA)
10 Growlanser V Generations (PS2)

On a side note, does anyone think Jissen Pachi-Slot Hisshouhou! Hokuto no Ken SE is import friendly? If you reply, "Bless you," then I'll take that as a no.

The real question is: Why? Is this Gundam game really good? Is it better than other Gundam games? Is it just the first series that's made it to the PSP that the Japanese are very interested in? Anyone have any ratings for it? Did Famitsu like it?

It's Gundam... pretty much end of story. Like any number of series in the US, the details don't really matter. Interstingly, there is a SD Gundam G Generation DS... but I've no idea what the sales were. It's a long running series across many platforms.

Don't have any reviews off hand, but it doesn't look all that hot to me...

Quite right, a good deal of fun but ridiculously overrated. If it wasn't so incredibly easy to the point of being silly, I think I would have enjoyed it more.

What? Gundam is one of the longest running series of anime featuring mecha. Super Mario Bros the movie is an old camp live action film. How exactly do they compare? Or is that your point?

I know a lot of folks would call me a heretic for this, but the only series I ever really got into was Gundam Wing and the Endless Waltz movie. Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team was surprisingly good too. My favorite of the games is still Gundam Side Story: 0079 for the Sega Dreamcast.

Then again, it's a figure next to a Japanese girl... it could still be like 2 feet tall.

also, NSMB was easy to beat, but did you unlock _everything_? It took me 10 billion years to do it, and then I had to invent a time machine to come back and tell you how long it took.

Quoted for truth and justice. The game was enjoyable, but I beat it in around 2 -2.5 hours.

It didn't feel like any substantial upgrade over previous Mario games either. I didn't get all the hype.

But it's a lot like the inertia in the original super mario brothers, which was more the model they were going after, I think.

Crazy japanese.Uh... just so you know, a life sized Gundam would be 60 to 90 feet tall. So this is, dunno, a 1/10th scale model, or so instead....

But yea, pretty crazy... I could see myself building one. But not for $3000 dollars.

Number nine on the list, "9 Rhythm Tengoku (GBA)" is something I'd wholeheartedly reccomend to anyone that like music games and wario ware.

I've been playing it the last week, it's an incredible amount of fun.

It's got all the whacked-out japanese craziness of wario ware minigames but they all focus on rhythm orientated gameplay.

Very addictive, and completely import friendly as they show you how to do each game type before you actually play a level.

"Finishing" NSMB is not beating the last level. To beat the game, you need 3 stars on your save... That's FINISHING it. anything less is just trolling.

Just spoke to a friend in Hong Kong, he braved a typhoon last week to get this game as it apparently sold out in Hong Kong everywhere, and WELL BEFORE release date.

So this game was pretty huge.

There were internet forums set up detailing all the stores that still had stock so that all the crazy gundam fans could go out in the typhoon to backwater markets and find themselves copies before it was gone, because the typhoon was going to prevent any new stock coming in for a while.

I don't think you quite get it. Games these days aren't just about getting to the final boss, watching the end credits, then bragging on an internet forum. It is more about playing for fun.
Yeah, you can run through the game to the end in an hour or two but of course you have to skip a couple of worlds and half the levels.
Do you complain about the original Super Mario Bros because you can get to Bowser in 5 minutes?
If you want to actually play the entire game it will take you a long time. There are tons of locked levels and the game is designed so that the first time you play through you have to miss a bunch of it. This encourages going through it and unlocking things and exploring. These are things that people enjoy.
Here's what you should do. When you get a game why don't you just type in a code to warp you straight to the final boss's dead corpse and then you can watch the credits and go online and say how the game sucks?

ok sorry bout that. i feel better now. that was cathartic.

...And in next weeks chart, Gundam will be at #8 or lower, and NSMB will be at the same place.

What's not really advertised is that the PSP IS SELLING WELL IN JAPAN! It's consistantly the 2nd highest selling of all the consoles/handhelds, outdoing the PS2 handily. The only reason it's kinda downplayed is because it's direct competition is kicking everyone's ass.

But the PSP was outsold by the GBA in July (http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?p=375782). Ouch... beaten by 5 year old 2D technology..... That's like the WonderSwan outselling the Xbox in Japan...

I really don't see anything odd with that, since there is a HUGE price gap between those two systems.

Well, beating New Super Mario Bros after reigning 11 weeks on top is no small feat to be sure; but in order to take back the lead, PSP had to have the lead in the first place. As far as I know, PSP in Japan has never had more units in the hands of consumers in its entire life as the the DS has. I could be mistaken, but I am sure the PSP has never had the lead.

It can't possibly 'take back' what it didn't have to begin with.

It can't possibly 'take back' what it didn't have to begin with. :cool:Well, to be entirely fair, there was a 2 or 3 month period in the beginning where the PSP, in Japan, was consistantly outselling the DS by 10-20k every week. But, yes, you are correct, the PSP never had a cumulative sold units lead over the DS.

I had a link to a really nice graphic, which I lost unfortuantly, that charted all of the PSP v DS numbers and even pointed out when certain games and hardware versions were released. Ever since Nintendogs, except for one week, the DS has held the weekly sales lead since. And certainly once December hit, the DS lead was solidifed. The DS sold 1 million+ units in December alone. In January, NoJ posted an appology on their website saying that they were sorry that they couldn't keep the damn thing in stock.

Which was the reason why the PSP outsold the DS that one week in January. You just flat out couldn't buy a DS at that point. It was sold the fuck out.
