View Full Version : Weekend Gamer - What are you playing?

I love weeks that go by so fast, you blink and it is already the weekend. The only problem with these type of weeks is the work that I need to finish - so that will be my priority before I get to play anything on the computer. Also, we have a slew of football games coming up - it maybe preseason, but it is the only time my team is in first place. Once I get that done, I will get back to playing Divine Divinity (it is so nice being able to play it without all the bugs), a little CoH, and that is probably all I will have time for. What are you going to be doing and playing this weekend?

I don't know how or why, but a few of my friends and I have picked up Diablo 2 again after leaving it behind for probably two or three years or so. The Battle.net servers aren't what they used to be, but the game is fun still.. Even though it looks horribly dated. Is there a high-res texture/model pack out there for this game? I've gotten over the old, grainy textures for the most part but I wouldn't complain about some upgraded graphics if they were available.
But anyway, we'll probably be powering our crew up, running MF runs, etc. this weekend. Should be a good time.

I also want to finally finish reading Thinner.

Well, I thought I was about to beat Advance Wars DS, but apparently I just beat part one. So I will probably lose a little more at that. Also, I have been trying to play Hitman 2 for the first time after enjoying Blood Money, but I can't seem to go back. I bought Beyond Good and Evil for the PC, but for some inexplicable reason, it does not have gamepad support and runs like shit. So, I dunno.

Jetherik,
While my 360 is in for repairs, I'm thinking about reconnecting my Xbox and getting some Halo 2 in for old times sake. I haven't played since the 360 launched and at level 25 or whatever I left off at, I can only imagine the rusty player / n00b treatment awaiting me. There is always my PC but I haven't bought a game for it since Quake 4.
I'm guessing most people will be cutting down on the zombie populations in Dead Rising.

Getting my ass beat in Table Tennis. I don't know what other games. I'm sorta bored right now and in between titles.
I might splurge and grab a laptop and play the writing game. I REALLY need some sort of motivation, and I think spending up to a grand on a computer would make me think twice about letting it sit and collect dust.

More magnetica, omg, still obsessed with that game. I picked up Space Invaders Revolution (for DS) and that's lots of fun too. I think i'm pretty close to completing the game in new age mode, so its a pretty short game, but still fun. Hanvn't finished of Lost Magic yet either, i'm right at the end too, I should do that this weekend since summer school is complete now.

Just got a 360, so this is my first week with it! Started a GameFly queue and received Tomb Raider and Top Spin 2, so I will be playing those. Since I didn't have any games when I first got it (waiting on GameFly), a big feature I wanted to try was the Xbox Live Arcade. So I bought UNO and Geometry Wars. Both great. After trying a few trials, I'm also going to be adding AstroPop, Zuma, Mutant Storm Reloaded, Galaga, and Frogger to my arcade collection.
So I'll be playing all those this weekend also!

I'm probably gonna finally pick it up next week as well LOL...if you can, be sure to have them plug it in at the store, before you take it home. The earlier models commonly had 'geometry issues', and while the 3082 apparently has a significantly less chance of them, it's still possible. Also, spend the 100 bucks and get a warranty.
Maybe it's not such the glowing endorsement you thought, eh? Well, I'm still gonna get it - its a perfect size and great price for what I need it for.

Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords
I've been critical of this game in the past, but after giving it another chance, it's a pretty good RPG. The story and character interaction are a lot deeper than I expected (I especially enjoyed Kreia making me second-guess myself and my choices) and there are some nice plot twists (with some wasted potential). I was expecting a sequel equally as polished and fresh as KOTOR the first time I played the Sith Lords, but adjusting my expecations (and knowing of its shortcomings beforehand) has helped me enjoyment of the game a lot.
Nonetheless, the fact that this game was rushed out of the door for Christmas shows. I especially hated the uninspired level design. How many bland grey hallways can you stuff into a single game?
By the way, the deep character interaction in the game reminded me a lot of some CRPGs of the past. And lo and behold, the Lead Designer of KOTOR2 is Chris Avellone, who also lead Planescape: Torment's design team. So, obviously, the guy knows his shit. If only they would've given Obsidian more time with KOTOR2.

I've had the same notion for a while now. I'm worried that getting a laptop still won't motivate me to write. I have plenty of free time, my own apartment with little or no outside distractions and I still haven't written much. I hope it's a worthwhile purchase if you get one.
On the gaming front, I'll be killing zombies and saving people in Dead Rising. I'm finally getting some good weapons. The katana and .50 cal gun are my favorites thus far.
I'm going to try to beat a few more expert songs on Guitar Hero. I didn't bother learning hammer-downs and pull-offs until I was on the sixth level on expert, and now it's biting me in the ass.

Cibi Robo and wishing it was Dead Rising.
Hey, be nice. Chibi Robo was one of my favourite games so far this year... though I could definately see where one could thirst for violent zombie mayhem over house cleaning robots.
1.I also want to finally finish reading Thinner. 2.I might splurge and grab a laptop and play the writing game. I REALLY need some sort of motivation, and I think spending up to a grand on a computer would make me think twice about letting it sit and collect dust. 3.I'll be reading A Game of Thrones all weekend.
Ah, the weekly book thread... WAIT A MINUTE, this is about games!
I just read Thinner a month or so ago. I'd read about half of it when I was a teenager but never did finish it... Very interesting book, though not King's best.
Game of Thrones is fantastic. I just lent my loaner copy to my friend so that she can become addicted to Martin's prose like most of my other friends. I still haven't gotten around to reading the latest book, despite having it the day it hit stores. I need to read a summary about what has gone on so far so that I can hit the ground running with book 4 instead of rereading the first 3 books :P
Good call on getting a laptop Kel. I really would love to have one. I could get much more done if I kept it game-free and just wrote on it. Toybane would flourish, I could get around to writing some stories distraction-free and chicks would dig it. Sigh. If only I had money left to spend on something like that.
With regard to books, I'm reading Illium by Dan Simmons. Very interesting thus far, but it's a lot meatier than the last few books I've read. I'm trying to resist the urge to put it down to read one of the Brian Keene horror novels I picked up this week for some lighter fare and so far I'm succeeding. Have you read Illium or Olympos, Kel? They are to the Illiad as Hyperion/Endymion are to Canterbury Tales. Very neat sci-fi/literary criticism in one tidy package.
Oh, as for the games I'm playing, I just finished FEAR and am currently plugging away at Dawn of War. I'm on mission 9 or 10, so hopefully I'll be done the game soon and can move on to the expansion. Other than that, just the usual DS stuff, maybe some Chrono Trigger on the SNES and possibly some Uplink or Farcry on the PC if I finish or get tired of Dawn of War.
I'm going to have to get back to playing Oblivion soon. For a game I upgraded my computer to play, I haven't put nearly as much time into it as I'd like. At least I'm working a lot of day shifts over the next few which means my gaming time in the evening is greater than usual. Huzzah!

I picked up a copy of Dead Rising, so that will be taking up some of the game time. Also, I have a copy of season 1-3 of HBO's The Wire, and I'm going to plow my way through that over the next couple weeks. From what I have watched so far, it is some of the best cop drama I have ever watched (I'm a big fan of shows like Law & Order, Homicide, etc).
I think the gamer inside me is finally dead. nothing interests me anymore. sigh.
maybe I should start writing again.
Eh, it's the summer drought. Wait for a month or so, there are some good (http://www.totalwar.com/) things (http://www.supremecommander.com) coming our way [edit: I'm at work, or I'd link more].
As for me, I'm going to restart Oblivion. My first character is stupidly powerful, to the point where I can just walk into any Oblivion Gate and ignore the enemies inside as I stroll up to the top of the tower. I am not compelled to play him anymore, sadly. :(
I'm going to install a lot of the mods from this list here (http://www.elderscrolls.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=515789) and try to bring the magic back. :)

FFX - things to-do:
a) find the invisible "something" buried in Calm Lands. Luckily I got a "No Encounters" weapon for Tidus which I got in Baaj Ruins.
b) clear Omega Ruins. I made all the way to Omega's Chamber ("No Encounters" doesn't work there !!!) and did he ever beat the crap out of me. I think I totalled around 300K damafe to him before his third Nova attack obliterated my already Auto-Lifed party.
c) Dark Aeons. How the fuck do I beat them, anyone? Even Dark Valefor rolls over my mega buffed up party with his Energy Blast overdrive (50K damage to each character!) Did I mentioned how Dark Shiva kicks my ass with 99 999 damage physical hits? Or how Dark Magus Sisters *TOTALLY* wreak havoc on my party with multiple 99 999 attacks on WHOLE PARTY? Dark Anima? God help me...
d) Arena. SEE ABOVE. Every "special" or "original" monster kills me in 3 turns dealing a whopping 30K damage or killing me instantly with insta-death attacks.
e) find the last Al Bhed Primer, #26! So far I found 25 of them of course playing WITHOUT ANY FAQ (same goes for Crests (all 7) and Sigils (3 right now!) and Dark Aeons (all)) !
BTW I loooooooooooooved the Cactuar hunting on Sanubia Desert!

Hmm...speaking of books, maybe I can curb my gaming spending by reading again. My friend's copy of Kushiel's Avatar has been sitting unread in my bag forever, and the last book of the Obsidian Trilogy just came out so...
But I read so fast it kinda doesn't work. I can plow through a 500 page book in about 2 days. :(

I moved up there from the SF Bay Area several years ago; August, I think it was. And it was spectacular. Then, sometime late September, the clouds rolled in. And didn't leave for NINE FREAKIN' MONTHS. Around April I couldn't take it any more and applied for graduate schools back here in the lovely Bay Area. Right around the time we left, in early June, it started to get beautiful again.

Just don't watch too many episodes all at once or you'll end up swearing like a sailor. I don't believe I've ever heard such a high concentration of the f-bomb in any show or movie I've ever watched. It's a great series but sheesh.
Priest: Good f-ing morning my f-ing child, how the f are you today?
Six month old child, whiskey in one hand: How the f-ing f should I f-ing know you f-ing bastard? F-ing get me some more f-ing juice you f!
Seriously. When I first got into it I watched around 8-10 episodes in the first week and started to notice that affect on my speech, so I cut back. :)

I've been living in Tucson for 6 years. I think I can handle getting out of the sun for a while. Oddly, though, this year (the year I buy a house with a leaky roof) has seen more sub-100 days covered in rain since I got here.
And I did the same thing as you. I moved to Tucson in a June, and I'm contemplating moving to Seattle in a September. Not so bright.
On the HBO DVD front, I'm about 5 seasons behind in the Sopranos, so I should burn through Season 2 this weekend for good measure. Also, I have the Age Of Empires: DS which is kicking my ass all over the place.

Shame that it's done after Season 3 though... Sigh.
What!? Season 3 is its last season? Nooooooooooooooo!
Is this confirmed? If so, why is this season its last?

You might as well move to Seattle, since anywhere's an upgrade compared to Tucson. :p
It's between Seattle, Chicago and Phoenix. Obviously, if even Phoenix is on the list, I must agree with you about Tucson.

Dead Rising. Unlike you WoW geeks, I'm a level 50 reporter now! Woohoo! :p
GOing to first unlock Infinity mode, because damnit, I want Infinity mode already, then, I'm going to get a jeep, a full tank of gas, and run over zombies until I am a genocider.
All in all, a full weekened, with a nice paycheck as summer session is over. Woo!

I need to get my hands on Season 2. Shame that it's done after Season 3 though... Sigh.
I guess I'm lucky if HBO even decides to bring S2 to Europe. Seriously, the first season of Rome got its DVD release only recently.
edit: Never mind, it's up on amazon.co.uk. I'll probably order it next month.

I've lived a number of places and in my mind nothing compares to Seattle. Been here for over 10 years now. Sure, we get a decent amount of rain (nowhere NEAR what our reputation says though. Nine months out of the year? Um, no.), but nothing compares to the summers here. The best way to sumarize Seattle weather is "mild." Rarely too hot, rarely too cold. Plus there's a LOT to do here, especially if you're into the outdoors.

Does it use Starforce, or was BGE released before that craze?

I am pretty sure it doesn't. I didn't see any mention of it in the EULA, but then again, I don't really care too much either way.

That's very reassuring. I've got a bunch of leads in the area, some with Microsoft, some with others. I'm just really getting into the idea. I'll hate to miss the Tucson winters (9 months of mild), but weather isn't the only problem. Boring ass town.

HBO decided to cancel a few shows this year, Carnivale and Deadwood being two of the more beloved.
Here's a link to the Save Deadwood page. (http://www.savedeadwood.net/) They are planning on having a couple two hour 'movies' to finish up the Deadwood story, but Season 3 is essentially the last true season of the show.
There's a pretty good little write up here (http://featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com/entertainment_tv/2006/06/is_it_hbo_or_ju.html) about HBO and why it doesn't make sense for them to cancel Deadwood given that there's not really anything to transition from the final season of Sopranos to whatever comes next. Ah well.

Barely any snow. Maybe 2~3 days out of the year and maybe one of those days will see a few inches of snow, but nothing major.
Cold, yeah, but not too bad. Nothing below 30 in the dead of winter.
I've lived in the Greater Seattle area for about 22 years now and I wouldn't change it for the world.

Jetherik,
While my 360 is in for repairs, I'm thinking about reconnecting my Xbox and getting some Halo 2 in for old times sake.
Too much playing on the 360?

1. Dead Rising
2. Crappy beta under NDA.
3. Punisher (PS2) - Really fun rental if you want an incredibly violent beat'em up/shoot'em up. Getting into melee range allows you to perform quick kills which are highly stylistic comic book type kills (think Tenchu stealth kills but you don't need stealth and you are the Punisher instead of a ninja). There is an incredible number of these animations available as they are different depending on what weapon you carry. Also, you charge up a Rage mode that makes the screen go blurry and gives you access to even more kills - Oh, and your health goes up while you are laying down the hurt. Plus, there are sometimes special kills or special interrogation areas where you can use the environment to do even more violent kills or interrogations. . . I like to fail at the interrogations and kill my subjects because the animations are so cool - but I lose points for it. Anyway, if you haven't played The Punisher and you find comic violence amusing, then you should rent it, or even buy it if you can get it on the cheap. :)

Punisher is a lot of fun. I rented it and had a blast doing all of those nasty interrogations and such. I seem to recall feeding someone's head into a band saw at one point. Yet I don't hear the chattering masses complaining about violence with this gem.
I'm going to have to rent that game again.

I got so insanely drunk last night, and my eyes are buttoned up as a result, I don't think I'll be playing much today. I really don't remember much of what went on after my nth beer, but as always I'm sure there is some apologizing to be made. I already received one call this morning but didn't answer it. :(

Heh... I never understood the "so drunk I cannot remember" attitude. Drinking is fine, but why not stop at a point before you are completely shit-faced? I did some pretty serious drinking last night, too, but I remember the whole evening and stopped early enough to be sober to drive home.

What's the point of stopping? Drink until bedtime. And I had a DD, which is great.
My only problem is I was so drunk that I forgot to pound the H2O before bed. When I do that I have no hangover problems.
I was so drunk one night that I stuck popcorn in the fridge and a milk jug in the microwave.

Well played, Kel... other than the water. Always hit the water.
I usually pass out or throw up before I'm too drunk to forget... far as I remember. Although, I've woken up in weird places before.

I thought I was going to throw up last night. I was drinking Magic Hat #9 like crazy (I was on a tight schedule; my DD had to work at 6 in the morning and we got to the party at nearly 9--and we live an hour away) and then I ran out completely. Someone handed me a Twisted Tea and sweet alcohol doesn't go good with me.
I also had some dreams or something...usually the morning after drinking I can't discern reality. Was it a dream or did it happen? So right now I'm very confused.
Anyway, I'm going to fire up Oblivion today, continue the main story. Haven't touched it since April. Also, I've been creating characters for Temple of Elemental Evil. I might jump in a little later.

Going off to Philly to watch Cirque du Soleil. Otherwise, I'd be playing the hell out of Dead Rising. Getting my HDTV next week (so I can read the damn writing), thanks to Zanzibar if it looks good, as I'm taking his advice on the TXS3082 Slimfit.
Great TV! I picked it up like two weeks ago, and I'm loving it. Dead Rising rocks on it, as well. Man this game is insanely hard. I've been fighting like hell just to get to the end of the first day. Maybe I care too much, but I'm determined to save me some Japanese tourists. Anyhow, I'm also going borderline insane trying to finish Kingdom Hearts 2 and Grandia 3. Beyond that I'm also stuck in Oblivion (a DB quest). I'm like a ball of frustration at this point. Maybe I should go read...

I understand it too well. If I drink more than 2 or 3 drinks, I'm going to drink a lot more than 2 or 3 drinks.
Sorta like sleeping with ex-girlfriends. It isn't something you set out intending to do, it is something that just happens.

My cell and AIM are two little asshole demons everytime I drink. I wish I could password lock both so that my drunk half won't know the code, but when I sober up I'll have access again.

If you stopped early enough to go home, it's very apparent you don't know what serious drinking is when you say that ;).
And why not stop? Because...the events your friends tell you did will be stories you can tell for the rest of your (possibly short) life.

True. If I drank enough to be drunk, I'd really have to wait in order to be capable of driving. That would mean HOURS. It takes an hour for each beer you drink to work its way out of your system completely. No way I could wait that long.

Drinking to the point of not remembering makes me think of the "Book of Questions".
Specifically, there is a question which asks if you could spend a week on a tropical island and have the best time ever, but you would not remember even a little of it, would you still want to go?
My answer was always no. If I couldn't remember the fun, why bother? Which is why I will drink to loosen up a bit, but never to the point of black out.
