Over at the CBC (http://www.cbc.ca/story/arts/national/2006/08/09/game-awards-noms.html), they're reporting on a new, Canada-oriented video game awards, known as the Canadian Awards for the Electronic and Animated Arts (http://www.caeaa.com/).

Peter Jackson's King Kong, and Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones lead the nominations, each with seven. See the full list of nominations here (http://www.caeaa.com/index.php/nomination/).

One of the most interesting statements however, comes later in the article:

Between the dramatic trophy and the fact that they've secured Canadian-born Hollywood star William Shatner to be host, the organizers hope to invoke the feel of more established, sophisticated award shows like the Oscars or Grammys.
"We want the show to be spectacular. I am very serious about Oscar dress and black tie," said Holly Carinci, who is the publicist for the awards and producer of the gala.
The good: More black-tie video game awards.
The bad: Canadian focus means the rest of the world won't care.
The ugly: Although William Shatner is the greatest man alive, he does not exactly exude "sophistication".

Sophistication?

We are talking about video games here, correct? I'm just checking seeing how I recently finished enjoying a game where I finally reached the three-thousand zombie kill mark. I am quite proud of that, as well.

It appears they have read Shatner's bio.

Canadian videogame awards, with Ubisoft leading!?!? Gasp! Stop the presses!

Why even hold awards? Just send hand jobs to Ubi & EA and get it over with. :p

Woohoo! Doodlebops Clubhouse Games FTW!

Sigh. I guess that a year when Bioware didn't release any games means that the PC side of things (from a Canadian perspective) is pretty meh. And did The Outfit actually come out? I must have blinked and missed it.

Not a bad idea, per se, but this list of Canadian games really sucks. The saddest part is that in previous years Canada has had a pretty good track record for being behind some rather big games (Splinter Cell, anyone?) but not this year.

Meh.

For no reason other than the fact that William Shatner's name was invoked:

I'd choose this over the Spike TV VGAs any day.

Strategy First (disciples)
Silicon Knights (too human, legacy of kain)
Jamdat Mobile

After reading the nominees... Lots of ubisoft indeed.

King Kong is up for seven awards. Seven. That is really sad. Yes, it was a fun game but it is not worth seven awards. That awards show already has no credibility with me. Just put it and Spike TV's awards show on the same night and we can ignore them at the same time.

You have to realize that it's limited by the fact that it's promoting Canadian games & companies. I'd like to see a list of the possible contenders, but maybe King Kong was the best of the lot... which is sad.

Correct me if I am wrong but isnt Blizzard North a Canadian developer as well. Or is this for strictly Canadian companies, not just companies with Canadian divisions.

I think Blizzard North is/was situated in one of the northern states, not Canada.

Blizzard North: Where "North" means "Northern California" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blizzard_North).

That snowy logo sure is misleading.

Well, it's only nominated for seven. Hopefully it won't win for all of them.
