View Full Version : Side-by-Side Size Comparison - PS3 vs. Xbox 360

Games Radar (http://www.gamesradar.com) has posted a side-by-side size comparison of the PS3 and Xbox 360, pictures included.

Check it out here (http://www.gamesradar.com/gb/ps3/game/news/article.jsp?sectionId=1006&articleId=2006081116942296019&releaseId=20060314132311609002).

We've got a PS3 - and here it is rubbing shoulders with Xbox 360 for the first time ever!

Created by Sony as an accurately proportioned replica, the PS3 model may be made entirely from wood, but it takes more than a cursory glance to realise that it's not the genuine article and gave us a good impression of what the Sony powerhouse will look like nestling next to our TV.
Holy crap, the PS3 is even uglier when placed beside the Xbox 360!

Meh, I don't think it looks hideous. Not a work of art, to be sure, but its not horrible. Now I want to see it's next to a regualr Xbox for a size comparison, thing looks like a beast!

It might have the best games in the world, but I won't wanna play them because that console is simply too ugly for my tastes.

The good thing is it isn't a disc tray. I like slot loaders, and the Wii has one, too.

Come on guys... everyone knows that size matters. I just don't think you're going to have as much satisfaction playing with a tiny little Wii and with a well-endowed PS3.

Unless of course, you like this "hot chick" Wii vs. "fat chick" PS3 analogy (http://www.macspoofs.com/2006/08/10/ps3-vs-wii/).

I used to think it was nice looking, but that was based on the carefully arranged shots released by Sony. Those shots make it look like one of the ugliest things I have ever laid eyes on.

Ok, am I crazy, or is there no image on the page? Maybe it was removed? I can see no image, and no link for a pic??

EDIT: Wow, this is the first time I have run across a page that renders totally differently in Opera. Used IE and it looks fine...weird.

EDIT #2: OMG, that is fugly. The PS@ was no looker, but at least it was just a square black box. This thing stands out like grandma at a strip club.

The interesting thing to me, more interesting than the Playstation 3 itself, is the way way stuff like this site deseminates. Sony now has the gamer fan base, almost as a whole it seems, working against them. It's hard to fight that type of inertia as it just snowballs into more solidified perspectives that further proselytize that create more solidified perspectives etc.

This site, and others like it, are hardly representative of the gamer fanbase. Polls and charts show the PS3 has many anticipated games in Japan. It'll do fine. Sony isn't kicking the bucket just yet. Myself, I'm forced into waiting for a price drop by that crazy price. WAY too expensive for my tastes, they should've matched the 360.

The only thing uglier than the PS3 is that site's awful gallery code.
Maybe it's the wood, but reminds me of an Atari.

EternalGamer

I disagree with you Rirath, I'm not saying it is unanimous, but I certainly would say the tide of popular opinion is definitely against them. You don't see stuff like this being posted about the 360 and Wii very often (except on really miniscule fanboy sites). Whether or not the system merits the ridicule it is recieving, you can't deny that it's pretty loud and widespread. I imagine a Sony PR agent grimmacing everytime something like this comes across his or her desk.

Why did they have to make it round on top? I wouldn't mind the size if it was flat, but from the looks of it I won't have room to put it, even if I wanted one, which I probably will once the games start coming.

It looks sorta like an old answering machine. I can picture some non-gamer guest telling me I've got a message if they saw a red light blinking on it.

On a purely technical note, I'm glad that it is bigger than the 360. Hopefully that means bigger heatsinks, better airflow.

It only takes one really good game to shut up most of those people, if not outright convert them.

They're just exercising the typical human's need to band into tribes of "us" vs. "them". Some days I think that all we need to have world peace is a good set of aliens to band together against.

Buy a 3000+ home theatre system and spend that again and more furnishing your livingroom and get back to me. An eyesore is an eyesore. We arent all college boys anymore, ya know! ;)

Besides, its not that people buy consoles based on looks, they *dont* buy consoles based on looks, big difference.

As to the PS3, to me it looks like a 1970s record player that tried to look futuristic.

I think it all depends on how it's marketed in Japan. If it's marketed as the JCB of consoles, then it will have problems. However, if it's marketed as the 'sleak and sexy future of entertainment', then it will be fine. In either case, it will absolutely wipe the floor with the 360 and maybe even the Wii.

Meh. . . I don't care about the aesthetics really. I just want it to play well and not be $600 (if you want HDMI, the larger HD, Wi-Fi, and the memory ports). I also want it to have some games that make feel like the purchase is worth the expense.

I've always thought that both the PS3 and 360 were ugly.

Seeing them side by side though?... the PS3 is uglier than the 360.
I Sony and MS have tried too hard to make them look "sleek" and instead made them a bit less functional for an entertainment area.
I just want something simple and small. It could be a simple rectangle for all I care... just let me stack the damn things!!

As for the PS3--I swear my uncle used to have a laserdisc player that looked just like that thing. So if it can play the original LD cut of Star Wars, that's bonus points in my book! Anyone got an old 30cm LD they want to try and pop into that thing?

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i304/tpeak/360_black_case_blue.jpg

I disagree with you Rirath

Man I sure have read that a lot over the past week.

You don't see stuff like this being posted about the 360 and Wii very often

360 had a lot of backlash before it was launched, and still does. The Wii has plenty of people who won't even touch it, EA is just particularly Nintendo friendly. I'll be there for a Wii on day 1 if I can, and I'll get a PS3 as soon as the price is reasonable... but I don't doubt for a moment that the PS3 is alone in the current backlash trend. The average gamer doesn't even know about half the bad press Sony is getting.

Next gen is expensive, and I don't think many people were ready to let go of the current gen yet. Personally, I think that's more the cause of the backlash than anything. The more the prices go up, the more people get into their camps.

What bothers me is how analysts, PS2 fanboys and many Japanese consumers ragged on the original Xbox for its size and ugliness, but this sucker (the PS3) is larger and, of course, the hypocrisy starts because there's no comparable ragging on it (one thread does not make the ragging comparable, either).

Only problem with that is that the 360 has ventilation holes on top of it. If you put your PS3 on top of your 360 your system will heat up a lot faster. Besides, I'm not going to drop 13 pounds on top of my 360.

It looks like an old piece of technology that is trying to look like it is from the future.

I am defiantly from the side of the fence that feels this is not a good looking machine.

When I pick one up at the end of its life (this will be the the year 3523 if Sony reports are accurate) I will probably hide it from view.

That's way too large. The 360 is oversized enough as it is. But still, the PS3 does have that Apple/Sony elegance that MS tried and failed to rip off. Really, they're both very Apple-ish in design. See if you can figure out which one steals from the PowerMacs and which one steals from the second-gen iMacs.

People who complained about the look of the original Xbox must really hate the PS3. If it's possible it looks even worse.

Do we know if the PSU is internal or external for the PS3?? If it's internal I wish they would have taken it out to make the actual console smaller. An external power supply can easily be hidden.

I don't think the Japanese hated the xbox for it's size. Only that it was the xbox, and It didn't have what they were into. How many non japanese consoles were successful in Japan?

There are many japanese companies making games in Japan for the Xbox 360. That doesn't matter. I think if Xbox launched with nothing but Japanese centric games, no one would buy it. Japan doesn't want it.

They're wrong about it, however, It's an excellent console. just like the orignial xbox. Doesn't mean the consumers will care.

It's relevant because some people like to know these things so that they can go ahead and plan for where they're going to put the thing and whether or not it's going to fit in with their current set up. And remember what's relevant for some people may not be so for some others - that doesn't mean it's not news or even newsworthy.

I don't have room in my entertainment center for my 360 (it's glass encased and thanks to the huge power brick and incredible heat dissipation, it can't play with the other machines) but that didn't stop me from getting it. If people go, "Hmm, I don't like the look or shape of X machine, I'm not putting it in my livingroom," then they have some serious issues. I know many people who hated the Gamecube to that extent. Purple and square!? Egads!

I like the look of the 360, at least vertical, but thanks to problematic design and flimsy backwards compatability (XBox still needs to be hooked up), I have no room for it besides my living room floor, OUTSIDE my entertainment center. But I don't mind because I'm not "console superficial".
