Quint of AICN fame has a short but insightful interview with Neill Blomkamp (http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=24139) concerning his new post directing the Halo movie.
Quint: What's your approach to the film? How do you plan on being faithful to the game while giving the audience something new?
Neill Blomkamp: I think you can be faithful to the game and just begin to layer things that have not yet been seen, over the fabric of what exists. You don’t want people who know the game to see the film and not have anything that isn’t new.
Editor's Note - Thanks also to Maskatron for submitting the same news.

Sounds like a good guy that's passionate about making the best Halo movie possible. Which is good. If he'll be able handle the pressure and difficulties associated with a big-bugdet Tyrannosaurus Rex-sized movie production is another matter.
Well, Peter Jackson hadn't done anything with a budget as big as LotR before, but that turned out pretty well, I'd say.

The only thing that's worrying me about the project is their junking of Alex Garland's script, which was supposed to be excellent and was the reason Bungie let the movie be shopped around in the first place. I hope the new guy knows what he's doing.

Jeez, if you wanna hear some fucking morons rant, just read the talkback section at the end of that article. Nothing on the internet suprises me, but these clowns are just idiotic. I love when people who don't know what they're talking about just bitch and moan about something.

They're a lot like the seagulls from Finding Nemo...

Neil Blomkamp isn't Peter Jackson. In the end, though, I think if Weta is doing the special effects and Peter Jackson is willing to oversee the project Blomkamp would have to screw up pretty badly to end up with a substandard film, which is unlikely to happen.

The talkback sections of AICN are like a perfect storm of internet idiocy: life-or-death seriousness deployed about inconsequential subjects and all the intellegence of the all-state 4th Grade Fart Joke Championship.

I think looking at his previous work (I've had Alive in Joville sitting on my hard drive for close to 3 years now along with his other work) that it would be hard for this guy to screw up ANY sci-fi picture. His ability to use hand-held-style "rough cut" sequences with CGI shots is fantastic WITHOUT the support of WETA.
Honestly I'm more concerned with the work WETA will be putting out than Blomkamp. I would have preffered Zoic (who did all of the "shakey-cam-in-space" shots for Firefly and Serenity) or ILM after seeing how King Kong turned out...but since Peter Jackson is essentially WETA there's little or no choice in the matter.

On the other hand, you'd think that as talented a first time director like David Fincher (who had done some really good music videos and had a good special effects background) would have had a hard time screwing up Alien 3, but there you go, it sucked (but I think it was the fault of a weak script). I'm pretty optimistic about Blomkamp though.

I don't see Jackson weighing in on creative decisions as much as some people seem to expect him to here. What I do hope he does is acts as a reasonable buffer between this director and the external forces that want to kill good movies in order to save them. Hopefully Jackson exerts his clout to convince anyone that needs convincing to have some faith in what the director is doing.
If Fincher had had that kind of support, Alien 3 might not have been the abortion it turned out as. It's unfortunate that the franchise has devolved into a forum for good directors (Fincher, Jeunet) to put their names on substandard films.
Alien vs Predator does not exist.

Neill Blomkamp is the future... maybe Uwe Boll can now stay in the past...
