CaptStu sent me word of the following article on Joystiq (http://www.joystiq.com).

We know a lot of you out there love you some Battlestar Galactica. Nay we say it's the best show on television? You better frakkin' believe it! Well get ready for more of the Sci-Fi Channel's hit series as it prepares for a PR offensive that includes the "first longform program ever to be offered" on Xbox Live Marketplace, according to GameSpot.
Read more here (http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/10/battlestar-galactica-flying-onto-xbox-live/).

While I'm no fan of the show, I know a bunch of folks on here are - this is a good thing!

There was a forum topic about this earlier... It is just going to be a recap episode. You know, one of those things that make up about half the episodes of Lost that ABC airs.

Speaking of Lost, they announced at Comic-Con, that Lost would have "Lost Diaries" a series of 2 minute movies that would be released on iPod and the like. It actually looked pretty cool. I could see stuff like that being very cool for "geek" shows like Lost and BSG.

I'm batting o for 3 today, or so it seems! :(It's ok, we still love you anyway. But seriously this is one of the best shows on TV, and anything that gets more people watching it is ok by me. I'm practically pacing waiting for season 3 in October.

I'm no fan of the show either. Don't worry, Fit. You have company. But, I do like the Live service going in this direction.

Have you ever tried watching it? I wasn't a fan of the show either until I sat down and watched the mini-series, found myself surprisingly blown away, and then downed all of the first season and almost all of the second season like heroin. I'd recommend giving it a shot if you haven't tried yet.

I watched some back-to-back episodes on a BG marathon and I was not impressed. The hammy acting and poor dialogue put me off.

Uhh... are you sure it was the new series, and not the 70's original? "Hammy acting" and "poor dialogue" are two things I have *never*, *ever* heard used in reference to the Galactica reboot.

This program, which is basically a recap clip show, is being shown on a lot of NBC owned networks in September.

I saw the headline and I was hoping for a BSG meets X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter type thing over XBL. Oh well, maybe that Freespace 2 mod will come out soon.

Well, that's half joke, half-homage. The original series, I'm pretty sure, had the characters using that word instead of it's real-word counterpart, "fuck," due to restrictions. Military personel aren't exactly the most effective verbal communicators, so to me it made sense that they tried to find a blunt word that can be used as flexibly as "fuck" without crossing any FCC lines. But I can't imagine what you are thinking of outside of that example. Maybe a lot of what happens seems hammy if you have no context for the actions taken. You really have to start with the mini-series.

Battlestar beats everything on television. Its a finely crafted piece of televisual art. The opposite end of the quality spectrum to the monotonous, ratings-grabber that is Lost.

Now that I don't agree with. I'd give that price to Deadwood hands down.

I keep watching BSG, but it has lots of flaws that bug me. It's sort of a love/hate thing. It's all passion untempered by logic, set in a bizarrely inconsistent universe with a contradictory, vaguely mormon-esque view of history and sociology. But it has hot babes and huge spaceship battles.

It's like... an entire race of people who think from their gut, in the Stephen Colbert sense. Nobody ever wonders aloud "hey, we had space travel 2,000 years ago, but all our history from that time period is vague religious texts written as if they were transcribed from pre-historic oral traditions." Nobody ever realizes "we could fit more words into our books and printouts if we just stopped cutting the corners off of all the paper." Nobody ever notices "hey, why is William Adama the only man in any of the 12 colonies to have more than one offspring?"

I can't imagine what will happen if they reach Earth and discover that we invented Toasters and Hummers in almost exactly the same forms they did, which would imply that the designs for those two machines are probably encoded into our very DNA.

From what I understand, the uncornered books/readouts are an inside joke from the creator about budgetary constraints.

Yea but you can pull apart 99% of sci fi shows like that. The story isnt about the science.
And trying to fix all those problems would lead to a generic and dull tv show, with lots of drawn out "explaination" segments, that no one would really give a crap about, and it would detract from the story.

And the whole forgetting there histroy thing. Well the story would be a crap load dumber if that wasnt in there.
Just dont focus on that sorta stuff, like when you watch fantasy movies :D

...except for any incidental music added after the original miniseries. The music they started with is great, if a little repetitive sometimes (especially when watching them back-to-back on DVD), but some of the guitar riffs and piano bits they added for emotional effect in season 2 really don't seem to be fully thought out and kinda leave a bad taste in my mouth, especially when played next to the music introduced in the first season. I guess that's one of those places where they cut corners again.

Actually, those problems would have been extremely easy to fix, or at least to keep them from being prominent. Don't call the lost 13th colony "Earth." That buys you a shitload more suspension of disbelief right there.

All I wanna know is how they are gonna write their way outta that season 2 ending... I mean come on they give up some good digs for a mud pit...like 8 months and they can't even build a decent house..

And then the dam cylons show up and are like hey all you trailer trash colonials sign this dam peace treaty/surrender or we'll kill you.

Wtf is up with Starbuck also, she's like useless,,"oh my boyfriend is sick...waaaa" I mean the Starbuck from season 1 would be like "Your sick, so suck it up..have a drink"

And Apollo,, Come on he's what 250lbs now. And they killed off the best character, That chick admiral from the pegasus. Just goes to show, if you beam over from a rival sf show your a dead man/( :) woman in this case)

Yea different composers. There is a big clump of similar sounding filler songs, but I really like the unique songs

It does seem weird, It'll be strange if they just show up in modern times. Is that what happened in the original? I've never seen it.
Still, I'm sure they can write it in in a believable fasion. Lots of colonys, people on earth forgot they were a colony and then their history ends up becoming greek myth.

The whole way through season 2 the characters were changing.
Thats one of the cool things about the story, everyones changing, and your not sure whos good and bad, everyone seems to want to do the right thing.

And Apollo,, Come on he's what 250lbs now

Only if his flab is stuffed with lead :D

I sound like such a nerd/fanboy

I guess I will have to give this show a look. I thought the commercials I saw looked cheesy, so I never watched it. I have yet to see good Sci-Fi on TV (not a Star Trek fan either, although TNG has some merit). Personally, I like Deadwood, Scrubs, and The Sopranos on TV right now, and that is about it (other than sports). Oh, and I watch Smallville, even if it is a little Dawson's Creek :)

Hammy acting and poor dialog?!?! LOL, did you watch the new incarnation of the show or the old one?
Because people especially praise it for being an intelligent and controversial show with cool characters and good dialog.
Maybe you lack style and flavor ;)

Even the LOST creators are big fans of Battlestar Galactica. For prove check out the official Lost Podcast!

I watched Moore's commentary about "33". Then's when I figured out *he* didn't have a clue about where the series was going. Oh yeah, later their fuel is down to 2 jumps. Good thing in 33 the cylons didn't keep it up for another hour.

Shit like that just pissed me off.

Other than that, it's a soap opera in space. What is wrong with you guys?

Kinda would have been a borring ass show if the Cylons found them and then slaughtered them in that episode.

So you're saying that I should like BG because the creators of LOST are fans? Well, you see, I am in control of my own likes and dislikes and am perfecty happy to let my own tastes dictate what I like and don't like.

I watched the two seasons with much of any interruption and I never noticed a dramatic change in the music as far as quality goes.

I imagine that was done quite intentionally, as a nod to both many of the major and not-so-well known religions that thread the dualing religions in the show (Judaism being the one in reference here). Its also a reference to the idea that a lot of our knowledge and early achievements came from someplace else. Whether these humans are the same as our humans is another question entirely, one i imagine the show's creators did not miss.

Yeah, good thing, because they were sleep deprived and wearing down. I don't really get your sarcasm here, maybe I missed something?

You can say that about every single drama on television. That word is thrown around way too often. And, by the way, the term is "Space Opera."

Yeah, if the cylons had jumped just a couple more times (after jumping like 260?!?!) they'd (humans) have run out of fuel in a few episodes later.
The only reason "33" was around was to create emotion and sympathy for the poor humans and contrast them to tireless machines. But 200 some jumps?!?! That right there removed "fuel" as a plot tool. See? It's cool, edgy and tense. But it backs the storywriting into a corner, unless .... you leave plot holes!

Okay, but I'm still not seeing your point. Why do you see this as bad? Do you think it is bad when a plot serves a thematic purpose?

How did that remove fuel as a plot tool? Because of that episode (and future activity), they had to start looking for fuel sources, a need that expanded several episodes forward and was not forgotten duing season two, where the laborers mining the asteroid containing their fuel source started to protest against Col. Tigh. I am 100% lost on your points here.
