View Full Version : Capcom Surveys: Would You Buy Dead Rising Sequel?

1Up (http://www.1up.com) has an article up pointing to a Capcom survey (http://ww2.capcom.com/deadrisingsurvey/). Seems they're considering a sequel to Dead Rising already, but rather than leap right into development, they want to know what gamers think. The survey's quite simple:
If a sequel to this game were to be released, would you buy it?
1. I would even buy a new console to play a sequel on if I had to.
2. I would buy it if it came out on a console I own.
3. I would wait and see how it is received first.
4. I would want to play it, but wouldn't want to buy it.
5. I wouldn't buy it.
Verrrry interesting. Judging by the positive reaction and number people I've seen on my friends list playing this, a sequel seems inevitable. Asking if they'd buy a new console to play it adds a bit of intrigue, hm? Dead Rising 2 as a PS3 exclusive? Well, probably not, but Sony can always dream.

Personally I think Dead Rising seems to be the perfect example of a game that does NOT need a sequel. It's a great idea, it seems to be fairly well exectured. Why can't games just leave well enough alone and quietly become classics?
Developers need to stop going back to the same well over and over again to milk consumer confidence for every dollar it's worth and start creating franchises that elicit the trust of gamers instead of just the same thing over and over again. For instance... Why not The Legend of Somebody Else? Why just Zelda and Link over and over again. Final Fantasy has proved that this concept can remain fresh for decades. Capcom should leave Dead Rising alone and be confident enough to create a new experiance that is equally as well concieved and exectued as Dead Rising

1. I wouldn't buy a system for one game, especially a very short game like DR.
2. Maybe
3. Yes
4. Yes
5. Maybe

I dunno, I could see a sequel working with new environments. They have done a mall, maybe an abandoned military base, or in an open city. A lot could be done with the concept.

I tend to dislike sequals but my belief is that this (DR) should be brought under the RE banner.
I can't see doing the same thing again as the first is liked because it's unique.
Take what you learned Capcom, and apply it to spiritual successors.
Perhaps opening up a new franchise using aliens or something...

Because it's merely a stepping stone. The game can be expanded so much more. Why not let you go around the entire town? Board up houses ala RE4 and use any items you find to fight zombies off? Why can't it be co-op with a few friends online while you're doing this? There's just sooooo much potential to make this go further.

An open city. A cruise liner. A single skyscraper. There are a zillion environments you could put these mechanics into.
Multiplayer!!!
Much, much more creativity with the "stuff". I dream of the Duct Tape addition. Man do I want to make my OWN weapons.
More environmental freedom. Let's see fires, trees you can chop down/smash over, a "climb" ability to climb up poles and ladders.
Man, I could go on for a while. DEFINITELY needs a sequel.

Does the pope shit in the woods? That's a silly question. As long as it's good I don't care who's making my zombie games. Keep them rolling. Some things I just don't get sick of. Whacking twitchers is certainly one of them.

I know we're all kinda used to sequels sucking, but that's not always the case. Sequels can sometimes take a good game, apply lessons learned, apply new tech available, and really open it up. Offshoot or not, doesn't matter.
Paper Mario = unique
Paper Mario Thousand Year Door = still unique, and much better.

Well, honestly... I'd rather see Dead Rising replace Resident Evil, or at least have Resident Evil take on many of Dead Rising's creative elements.
Kefkataran

I don't even really see that much fo a comparison between Dead Rising and Resident Evil. Dead Rising is a campy, fun, more loose game world with crazy action gaming where you kill hundreds of zombies in big groups. RE is a more serious (successfully or not) game world with slightly slower-paced, more nerve-wracking action gameplay that's based much more around guns. They're both extremely different games. The only similarity are the zombies, and even those are pretty significantly different in each.

Once again, I'll agree with this statement.
I was under the impression that DR was a tech demo for the next RE.
As much as I like DR for what little I have played of it this week, I don't see why it would not be a chapter in the RE story.
I just want a new franchise from Capcom. Give us a new story. They have already proven the gameplay.

This game could do a sequel. Like what many have already said, it could be an open city with many new and different types of objects. Even a way to barricade yourself, which you can almost do in DR. But what would really make the sequel worth it, is co-op over Live!. And you can only talk with someone if they're near you, and you have to radio them if they're not around. It could be co-op missions, or a large zombie infested area to battle and survive in with a bunch of other players. Vehicles too.

I think for a sequel there needs to be a new location, not really sure if you can outdo the idea of a mall as the shops fir the theme so perfectly. But not Willimette, and I don't want Frank or any of the characters to carry over to 2, maybe to Dead Rising 3.
I also think if the sequel did away with a time limit, maybe make the revolve around getting your car working while dealing with craziness and the game ends when you can drive out of the area.

Zombies? How about adding werewolves for the sequel? Find a house (when you're going to do an open city) to spend the night before the creatures (zombies, werewolves, etc) get stronger.
What if you find a house, board it up and the person you were supposed to save turns into a werewolf. Since you made sure nothing can get into the house, getting out of the house won't be that easy.
They'd have to give the game another name, but still.

Off topic - I played for a couple of hours last night and had a great time until I died. I saved me progress before quitting only to find out that I had to start at the beginning again. But Evil Dead has never been about fighting waves of deadites. It works with zombies, as they are slow and stupid, but deadites are neither. I would probably buy it anyway, as I am a huge Evil Dead fan, but it would not be true to the series in the least.

You don't have to take the pictures or watch the scene talking to Carlo. Just hit "start" and you can skip all that stuff. It takes relatively little time (under 2 minutes) to be back in middle of the action if you skip the cut scenes as soon as they appear.

I haven't opened my copy yet, and maybe they've done this in the full game, but learning new moves would be cool. Perhaps cybernetic implants? Zombies like in Land of the Dead? Coop for sure would be sweet!!!! Maybe a romantic subplot with a zombie who doesn't like to feed off human flesh, for the most part. Zombie livestock. Zombie fruit. Cardboard Tube Zombie basher. Power ups are a classic for Capcom...let's see some of those. Hulk Smash gloves. Zombie Bill Gates!

So here's my take... the next RE NEEDS zombie melee fighting like this. That's why I hate RE games most of the time... you get like one puny gun, which you can't aim worth nothin, and a handful of bullets. You've got a combat knife which is utterly useless in every way. I know it's 'survival horror', but I get sick and tired of being the one at a huge disadvantage and having no combat skills.
RE made strives here, you could actually aim and there was more ammo... but nothing compared to DR. In the next RE game, I want to take them out!

Ah yes...downloads...
For me, this is the type of game that defines the purpose of consoles...doesn't need to be the sharpest image, the controller is just right (not saying the controls are, sadly), and it's perfect for a huge TV!
Rirath...they made Dead Rising so you could have that visceral zombie destroying craziness we've all wanted at some point in RE. Personally, RE4 had tons of that feeling...when you upgrade your weapons you seriously kick ass. Ripping a group up with the shotgun always felt good.

I dont know how to explain it, but when playing RE I am alwyas reminded that I am playing a video game, be it the controls, camera, or inability to do simple things like toss a lamp at zombies.
DR feels more "real" to me, it feels as if it could happen or is happening when you play the game.
Though the two are similar they are both very different at the same time. RE scares the crap outa you with jump moments, while DR does the same thing except it does it by making you think "Holy shit I am truely surounded by hundreds of zombies, I gotta get outa here!"
Anyone get what I am saying, or is it just me?

Resident Evil 4 was a way cooler game than Dead Rising. But then I tend to prefer tightly structured games over sandbox games. You get a real sense of progress and exploration when you play it. It's literally a game where you never know what is in the next room. In Dead Rising, you always know what is in the next room--it's just a few hundred aimlessly wandering zombies and an occasional crazy person with a gun.
Resident Evil also has a lot more strategy and you always have to really careful how you manage your resources, knowing once you use that explosive ammo, you probably won't see it again anytime soon. In Dead Rising, all regaining any weapon requires is exiting a room and re-entering it.
Having said all that, I like Dead Rising. It's like "Resident Evil: The Arcade Game." There's definitely room for both. But if "Dead Rising 2" and "Resident Evil 5" were sitting on the shelf in front of me, it would be no contest. Resident Evil 5 hands down.

RE4 had it ALL. A real RPG like upgrade system, although based on weapons, it just felt right for that game. The tightness of the controls (a first for the RE series)...the controls reminded me of what it was like to play San Andreas after just playing Vice City...a monumental improvement. The story was good, the action was excellent. I immediately started on a second play through once the credits were done after my first play through. I wish RE4 would come out for the PC soon so I could get it in native widescreen and a decent resolution.

About half of those are good games. But whether or not they are good, he specifically referenced games that were "big hits." Most of those weren't popular enough to even consider porting to another console. The only big hits that were exclusives on your lists are Halo and Ninja Gaiden. If you count the PC ones, you can add Fable and the KOTOR games. Not all that sizable of a list. There are probably easily that many titles that started off as Xbox games and migrated to PS2.

I too was thinking that if the gloomy amothsphere, storyline, and survival horror feel of RE was to be mixed with the scope of DR, the freeroaming, and the ability to interact with one's environment, the resulting game would be a masterpiece of survival horror, zombie smashing fun.
