Camp Hyrule (http://camphyrule.com/) is giving out a Wii, and this tidbit was nestled in the sweepstakes info of the camp's registration email:

Approximate retail value of the Wii video game system has not yet been determined, but will not exceed $250.00.

Not exceed $250? That means the price will be $249.99. $50 too much IMHO. If people called the X360 a Xbox 1.5, what would the same people call the Wii? GameCube 1.1? It's just a souped up GameCube with a funny controller :) . Seriously, I can't wait to get my hands on a Wii (don't laugh). I will have to give it a go before deciding if I'll buy one or not. It's all about the controller. If it feels right it's a go, but if it feels a tad off I'm out.

Wait a second. I signed up for Camp Hyrule and I never got any registration email! When did these go out? I didn't know they were giving away a Wii. Where did you get this information?

I think the news would be if Nintendo launched a console that cost more than $199 since they've yet to do that.

Wait, if a Wii just is a souped up Gamecube with a funny controller, then what in God's name justifies the price of the PS3?

Au contraire, the NES, SNES, N64, and GC ALL launched for more than $199. They all launched for $199.99, to be exact. :p

I still feel quite confident that the Wii will launch for that price as well.

I wouldn't mind a bundle for $250. Maybe an extra controller would be nice. That way, right out of the box, it is a multiplayer system.

Except that the U.S. dollar is really weak right now. If Wii launched at the same price as the Gamecube did in Japan, Europe and Canada, it would probably cost more in the U.S. since U.S. dollars are worth far less than were 5 years ago.

Not to mention that inflation requires nintendo to increase their prices eventually.

Yeah, that's true. However, it hasn't caught up to them up 'til now, which is pretty amazing. And considering the fact that people seem to think something around that price point is possible, I'm just betting they'll stick with it again.

People who want to play with the new controller. People who want to play Nintendo games or exclusives. People who want to download NES, SNES, Genesis, TG16 and N64 games. People who want to replace their GameCube. People who don't usually play games and want to try these new 'anyone gamer' games. People who want the Wii as a 2nd console. People who want more affordable games. People who want party games. Yeah, there are a few people who would pick up a Wii at $250.

You're forgetting that Wii has flash memory included, but you need a memory card for the 360. So the 360 Core is really $340, which is why nobody buys it.

250 is very affordable, though still not exactly cheap considering the technology you get with it. When you consider Nintendo claim they're not going to make any loss on Hardware, whereas MS and Sony are both making huge losses, it's obvious the Wii doesn't use nearly as much expensive technology.

31 Flavas

It will be priced at 229.99I'd still place my bet on $199. All of their previous consoles have been $199. And aside from the accelerometer stuff, as Evil and Zeal and all the other smarty pants are more then ready to tell you... There's not a whole lot going on in there in the high-fi department.

The GameCube is $99, I figure new controllers, Wifi, Virtual Console, and modestly upgraded hardware can be done for $100 extra easy. They aren't using exotic or expensive hardware like Sony and Microsoft, and after their total domination and fan crazyness for Wii at E3 '06 I don't think they need to worry about having to price in R&D. They can make back R&D in time with volume.

Besides if they launch at $250 or even $230, one $50 price cut from Microsoft may leave potential Wii customers confused and unsettled. Since even though the "core" system is pretty gimmpy, the "Gimp60" would have all this 'hi-def' and better hardware stuff for the same $250 or $20 extra.

That price of course, doesn't factor in the $40 memory card they'd need to save game data or the $50 Live Gold, both of which are included with the system price of Wii. I'm just thinking the idea of good value and gameplay would be over shadow'd by the two being the "same" price.

I mean lets face it, in the US, in the face of $3-$4 per gallon for gasoline, hybrid and high MPG cars are not the top selling vehicles. It's "Manly" 4WD, SUVs and Trucks because their prices have bottomed out for obvious reasons.

Thank you, Ric Romero.

Though I have to agree with Flavas above. If Nintendo wants to be the cheap, affordable, everyone's system like they claim, they really have to be the definitively lowest priced console. I don't think they can really accomplish that with a $250 price tag.

Sometimes I wonder if people even bother to think about the things they are saying before they actually post them. Why must anti-Nintendo people be so goddamn stupid?

Especially since it costs $129 for a DS Lite. What makes that Sony fanboi think Nintendo would offer up their console for $149? A $20 difference from their handheld? Oh I know why, because its got a crappy processor, hardly better than the Gamecube, right? Give me a break, the Wii is going to pwn asshole. I know, I've played it.

I'm much more interested in the price of the accessories. Here's to hoping that they are priced reasonably and not in the ridiculous range like a certain other console...

Please Nintendo - Keep the controllers at $30 tops!!

As long as the bundle is a deal at $250 - say the console, a game, and two controllers. That'd be great.
