On Tuesday it was revealed that Dave Perry, the famed founder of Shiny Entertainment, was getting back into game development after leaving the dev studio he created back in March. The new title is something new to Perry, a free-to-play MMORPG called 2Moons that's an adaptation of a Korean title that will be published in this country by the new version of Acclaim. FiringSquad got a chance to ask both Perry and Acclaim CEO Howard Marks (http://www.firingsquad.com/news/newsarticle.asp?searchid=11614) about 2Moons as well as other topics. Here is a snip:
FiringSquad: The game will be free but will have in-game ads. How overt will the ads be in the game and what benefits will there be for the player if he or she chooses to turn them off?

Dave Perry: We have some innovation there also, by allowing you to scale your interest in adverts. "NONE", "OK, A FEW HERE AND THERE" and "I'M COOL WITH THEM IF I'M BEING SERIOUSLY REWARDED". So how in-your-face are we planning, like will everyone be dressed in logos? Heck no, not at all. Currently the "worst case" is a small rectangle still image in the corner of your gameplay screen. The others are built into the interface outside the game screen (like the installer.)

So what happens if you decide to go the whole haul with the ads? I mean if it's free to play, then are they going to pay you? Get better gear? Or is it mystical in the sense that everyone will using 'Gimme ads 4 gear!'?

Dave Perry + Acclaim ≠ High Hopes

The article mentioned turning off ads would mean less experience from kills, etc. I would guess that having ads on gives you the equivalent of being "rested" in WoW: double experience points. They also mentioned Ad Rewards, as items you could gain for looking at ads, not sure about what those would be.

Anyone else notice the large amounts of free Korean MMOs around lately? And that they mostly suck? I've got very little hope for this plan.

Even after all these years, every time I hear the name Dave Perry, I remember that classic episode of Gamesmaster (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xkG9fD82KQ) and think, "what an unbelievable tool".

(By the way, I should point out that that's a different Dave Perry. I'm sure the Shiny Entertainment Dave Perry isn't a tool at all. He did design Earthworm Jim, after all.)

No, Doug Tenpal made EWJ and he is the biggest tool on earth.

Ah, the 'take a crappy two-year old MMO and make it worse by adding a truckload of adverts' market. It's gonna be huge!

Horrible interview too, in which Perry tries (and fails) to convince us that he's Still Cool - in between plugging his consultancy service, that is. Meh.

And yeah, Dave Perry's a tool, too. He almost ran me off the road one day in his loverly 7-series BMW with the big-head plate; SHINYDP.

And what's with all these guys with the Moons & Monkies in their names? Can't these guys come up with something new?

2Moon, Planet Moon, High Moon.

How's about we just "moon" you? :p

I stand corrected. I just like to assume people aren't tools until convinced otherwise.

Hey this is the ex-Shiny David Perry.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, stop mixing me up with that other Dave Perry.

He was a host on English TV, he wears a bandana. We don't even look remotely similar, I'm ridiculously tall (without any headgear), and he goes out of his way (actually tries) to piss people off, telling everyone he's the best gamer on the planet.

Mixing me up with this guy is below the belt!

My website is http://www.dperry.com, his website is: http://www.gamesanimal.com

So feel free to bash me all you like, I just don't want his share too!

Ego, this must have been years ago, but what the heck were you doing that made me nearly run you off the road?

2Moons was named by Acclaim, Planet Moon is another studio, and High Moon, well that's yet another studio I have absolutely no link with. Blue Moon is a song I didn't write... Well you get the point.

Man is this like 5 year old road rage or what?

H.Bogard, No this isn't a Shiny game in any way, I left Shiny in February. It's a successful game in Korea, that I think people here might enjoy. Releasing it for free, means it costs you nothing to decide if you like it or not. I'm personally hoping more publishers offer free games as that will grow the size of our industry dramatically (reducing the power of retailers to force high prices.) It will also stop the need for playing through a demo, then buying a game, then having to start all over again. (As you get the entire game right away, and your credit card stays in your pocket.)

When I hear EA announce that subscriptions are their future, "I hope not."
